About this file
F-35 Aircraft Cleaning (Local Procedures) - Maintenance Procedure Document
This document is a maintenance procedure specification for spot cleaning of F-35 aircraft exteriors between scheduled wash intervals. The procedure establishes required conditions, safety protocols, supplies, and step-by-step cleaning instructions. Required preconditions include ensuring the aircraft exterior is safe for maintenance, closing all canopies and doors with barrier paper installed, and installing intake, exhaust, and heat exchanger covers. Three cleaning supplies are specified: spray bottles (S-7272), aerospace equipment cleaning compound (MIL-PRF-87937 T3), and aircraft exterior cleaning compound (MIL-PRF-85570 T2), all in quantities as required (AR).
The procedure incorporates multiple safety warnings and cautions addressing flammable solvent hazards, skin and eye irritation risks, fall hazards from working on elevated surfaces, aircraft damage prevention, temperature constraints (minimum 39°F/4°C), and brake contamination prevention. The cleaning process includes seven sequential steps: spot cleaning preparation, mixing cleaning compound at specified ratios based on soil level (light soils require 9 parts water to 1 part compound; moderate-to-heavy soils require 4 parts water or undiluted compound), cleaning aircraft left and right sides followed by bottom surfaces, cleaning the aircraft top, cleaning landing gear assemblies (nose and main landing gear), cleaning inner wheel well surfaces, and returning the aircraft to the squadron. Critical notes specify protective coverings for windows and canopy, brake protection requirements, and proper cleaning cloth application techniques to prevent surface damage.

WARNING
Cleaning solvents are flammable and are hazardous to skin and eyes. Make sure there is sufficient air flow. Keep ignition sources away. Prevent skin and eye contact. Failure to comply can result in injury or illness to personnel.
Compounds are irritants to skin and eyes. Prevent skin and eye contact. Failure to comply can result in injury or illness to personnel.
Personnel can fall while working on top of aircraft. Maintenance stands must be put near aircraft where personnel are working and protective shoe coverings must not be worn on wet aircraft surfaces. Failure to comply can result in injury to personnel.
CAUTION
Aircraft performance can be affected by dents, scratches, or abrasions on aircraft surface.
Protective cover must be used on walk areas during high volume traffic. Protective shoe coverings must be used at all other times, unless aircraft is wet. Sharp-edged tools must not be put on external surfaces. Failure to comply can result in damage to aircraft.
Abrasives can damage aircraft coatings. Abrasive cleaning equipment must not be used to clean exterior surfaces of aircraft. Failure to comply may degrade the performance of the aircraft coatings.
Liquid can freeze in low temperatures. Aircraft cleaning must be performed indoors when outside ambient temperature is below 39 deg F (4 deg C). Failure to comply can result in damage to aircraft.
Contamination can result in degradation of braking performance and decrease brake life.
Contamination from grease, oil, fuel, cleaners, solvents, deicers, and coolants must be prevented. Failure to comply can result in damage to aircraft.
Procedure
• Procedure is intended for occasional wipe down of contaminated areas of aircraft surface that occur between aircraft wash intervals.
• Refer to additional information for spot cleaning procedures, safety precautions, and personal protective equipment given in TO 1-1-691 Chapter 3 Paragraph 3.5.2.2 in support of this maintenance procedure.
1. Perform aircraft spot cleaning.
NOTE
• DAS windows, EOTS window, and canopy should be covered with barrier material assembly. Strips of barrier material should be taped together with overlap of 0.25 inch to make one solid cover.
• Barrier material should not be secured with tape to DAS windows, EOTS window, or canopy. Tape must be applied to aircraft exterior only.
• If spot cleaning touches canopy transparency, protective sheeting should be applied.
• Incorrect cleaning compound ration and/or excessive force when cleaning may cause damage to aircraft surface.
• Brakes must be covered to prevent exposure with water and cleaning solution
2. Mix cleaning compound into spray bottle. Refer to Table 2. Aircraft Cleaner Mixing Ratios.

3. Clean dirty surface of aircraft.
1. Spray diluted cleaner on cleaning cloth.
2. Clean dirty surface of aircraft left side or right side .
3. Rinse surface of aircraft left side or right sidewith clean cloth saturated with water.
4. Clean dirty surface of aircraft bottom side .
5. If surface of aircraft bottom side s not clean, go to Step 3.1.
6. After 5 to 10 minutes, go to Step 4.
4. Clean top of aircraft.
1. Clean dirty surface of aircraft top .
2. Rinse surface of aircraft top with clean cloth saturated with water.
3. If surface of aircraft top is not clean, go to Step 4.1 .
4. After 5 to 10 minutes, go to Step 5.
NOTE
• LH and RH MLG are same. Procedure is the same for cleaning left and right MLG.
5. Clean landing gear.
1. Clean dirty surface on LH and RH MLG and wheel.
2. Rinse surface on LH and RH MLG and wheel with clean cloth saturated with water.
3. Clean dirty surface on NLG wheel and NLG .
4. Rinse cleaning solution and loose soil from NLG wheel and NLG with rag soaked with clean water.
5. If surface of LH and RH MLG and wheel is not clean, go to Step 5.1.
6. After 5 to 10 minutes, go to Step 6.
6. Clean inner surfaces of NLG, and MLG.
1. Apply cleaning solution (LMAMN040T1/BG) to cleaning cloth.
2. Clean NLG wheel well with moist cleaning cloth.
3. Clean NLG wheel well surfaces with dry cleaning cloth.
4. Clean LH MLG wheel well with moist cleaning cloth.
5. Clean LH MLG wheel well with dry cleaning cloth.
6. Clean RH MLG wheel well with moist cleaning cloth.
7. Clean RH MLG wheel well with dry cleaning cloth.
