SECTION 02640

VALVES AND ENCLOSURES

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01

SCOPE

This work consists of furnishing and installing water valves, and valve boxes AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS and specified herein.

1.02

CODES AND STANDARDS

In addition to the Codes and Standards listed under Section 01061, Regulatory Requirements, work performed under this section shall meet the requirements of the following:

A.

Work performed under this Section shall meet the requirements of the Uniform Plumbing Code, 2000 Edition.

B.

The following standards are applicable:

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)

2.

American Water Works Association (AWWA)

3.

Underwriters Laboratory (UL)

1.03 SUBMITTALS

Submittals shall conform to Section 01300.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

Valves and valve boxes shall be new, of size, material and type SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS or specified herein.

2.02

VALVES

A.

Bronze Gate Valves, Class 125 – ½ inch through 2½ inch. Valves shall be bronze, screw-in bonnet with solid wedge disk, non-rising stem, with wheeled handle, 200-psi non-shock cold water, oil, or gas.

B. Iron Gate Valves, Class 125 – 3 inch and larger. Valves shall be non-rising stem, iron body, bronze-mounted, double disk with resilient rubber seat rings and parallel seat type conforming to the requirements of AWWA C-500. Valves shall have mechanical joint or flanged ends and hand wheel.

C. Ball Valves, ½ inch through 2½ inch. Valves shall be bronze body, chromium plated ball, blow-out-proof stem.

D. Air Release Valves. Valves shall be of a corrosion-resistant material, automatic valve with ball float and lever action closing system. Float shall be stainless steel.

2.03 PRESSURE REDUCING VALVE

Water pressure reducing valve shall be bronzed body construction with thermal expansion bypass, stainless steel strainer. Initial pressure up to 250 pounds and reduced pressure range of 25-75 pounds. All pressure reducing valves shall be set at 30-psi unless otherwise noted on drawings.

2.04 HOSE BIBBS

Hose bibbs shall be of rough brass, service line pattern, no hose kink design, I.P. male, and with tee-handle. They shall be the size as shown on the drawings.

2.05

PRE-CAST CONCRETE UTILITY AND VALVE BOX

Boxes shall be pre-cast concrete. Boxes located in traveled ways shall be traffic rated with H-20 cast iron frame and cover. Covers shall be marked "WATER". Extension shall be of the same material and manufacturer as the box unless otherwise specified herein. Installation, size, and type of box shall be as SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01

VALVES

Valves shall be installed AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. Valves shall be installed in such positions that they are readily accessible and can be easily and fully opened and closed without binding. All valves shall be installed with stems pointing up. Where possible all valves shall be installed in the center of the valve box. Where extension handles are required to operate valves, contractor shall provide the Government with two handles. No ball valve will be installed below grade.

3.02

VALVE BOXES AND ENCLOSURES

A. All valves shall be installed in boxes or enclosures AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS and specified herein. The box shall be set over the pipes, centered on the valve, and related assemblies. The area in which the box sets shall be compacted as required for the sub-base for structures. The box, when in final position, shall be 1-inch minimum above surrounding finish grade and there shall be a minimum of 1/2-inch minimum clearance between the box and the pipeline at any point.

B. All boxes shall be provided with a lid marked “WATER”. For areas in traffic areas, the lid shall be rated for H-20 loading. Lid in non-traffic areas shall be concrete manufactured for the box it serves.

C. After the box is in final position, the area around the box shall be backfilled and compacted the same as for structures.

3.04 TESTING

Upon completion of water distribution system, it shall be tested. Contractor shall coordinate this test and notify the Contracting Officers Representative 24 hour’s prior to test. Both ends of the water distribution system shall be capped and charged with water. The system shall be pressurized to 100 psi and shall remain at this pressure for 60 minutes. In the event the system does not hold pressure, repairs shall be made and the test will begin again.
