SECTION 08551
ALUMINUM-CLAD WOOD CASEMENT WINDOWS
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
1. Section includes factory fabricated aluminum clad wood casement windows, fixed transom, operating sash, factory glazed, operating hardware and insect screens to be installed in an existing window cavity.

1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. Wood Windows: Wood aluminum clad sections, factory fabricated, vision glass, related flashings, anchorage attachment devices, natural wood finish for exposed interior window.
B. Configuration for casement units: Outward opening, side hinged, and fixed transom sash.
1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Primary Performance Requirements: AAMA/NWWDA 101/I.S.2 Specification OPD-45.
B. System Design: Design and size components to withstand dead loads and live loads caused by positive and negative wind loads acting normal to plane of wall as calculated in accordance with ASTM E 330 to design pressure of 60 lb/sq ft.
C. Member Deflection: Limit member deflection to flexure limit of glass 1/175with full recovery of glazing materials.
D. Lintel Deflection: Accommodate deflection of lintel without damage to components, deterioration of seals, or movement between window and perimeter framing.
E. Air and Vapor Seal: Maintain continuous air barrier and vapor retarder throughout assembly, primarily in line with inside pane of glass and heel bead of glazing compound.
F. System Internal Drainage: Drain water entering joints, and moisture occurring within system to exterior by weep drainage network.
G. Thermal Movement: Design sections to permit thermal expansion and contraction of components to match perimeter opening construction.
H. Air Infiltration: Limit air infiltration through assembly to 0.33 cfm/sq ft of wall area, measured at reference differential pressure across assembly of 1.57 psf as measured in accordance with ASTM E283.
I. Vapor Seal: With Interior Atmospheric Pressure of 1 inch SP, 72 degrees F, 40 Percent RH: No failure.
J. Thermal Performance: Condensation Resistance Factor (CRF) Class of not less than C45 when measured in accordance with AAMA 1503.1, and maximum U-Value Class of U36 when measured in accordance with NFRC 100.
NFRC ENERGY STAR labeled.
K. Water Leakage: None, when measured in accordance with ASTM E547 under a static pressure of 6.75 psf after 3 cycles of 5 minutes each, with water applied at a rate of 5 gallons per hour per square foot.
L. Forced Entry Resistance: ASTM F588 Grade 10 and 30 (ground level windows) for assembly types indicated.
1.5 SUBMITTALS
A. Shop Drawings: Indicate opening dimensions, framed opening tolerances, affected related work, and installation requirements.
B. Product Data: Submit component dimensions, anchorage and fasteners, glass, internal drainage details and for window hardware and accessories.
C. Manufacturer's Certificate: Certify products meet or exceed specified requirements
D. Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Submit special procedures and perimeter conditions requiring special attention.
1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Perform Work in accordance with the following:
1. Windows: Fabricate 588 assembly in accordance with AAMA/NWWDA 101/I.S.2.
2. Insulated Glass: Fabricate insulated glass units in accordance with SIGMA or GANA Glazing Manual.
B. Mockup
1. Provide sample installation for field testing unit performance requirements at a window unit specified for replacement. This will determine acceptability of units’ installation method.
2. Approved mockup will represent minimum quality required for work.
1.7 QUALIFICATIONS
A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing commercial wood windows with minimum three years of documented experience.
B. Installer: Company specializing in performing commercial installation of wood windows with minimum five years experience.
1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Protect factory finished surfaces with wrapping. Do not use adhesive papers or sprayed coatings that bond when exposed to sunlight or weather.
B. Store off ground, under cover, protected from weather and construction activities.
1.9 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
A. Do not install sealants when ambient temperature is less than 40 degrees F (5 degrees C).
B. Maintain this minimum temperature during and after installation of sealants.
1.10 WARRANTY
A. Furnish twenty-year manufacturer warranty for insulated glass units from seal failure, interpane dusting or misting, and replacement of same. Furnish a ten-year manufacturers warranty on all other window components.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 WOOD WINDOWS
A. Manufacturers:
1. Pella Corp. Model Designer or Architect Series Fixed and Casement Windows;
2. Marvin Windows and Doors;
3. Pozzi Clad Wood Windows;
4. Substitutions: Provide complete manufacturer catalog sheet information covering product performance, component specifications, options provided, warranty, and other salient characteristics that will satisfy review to determine equivalence.
B. Product Description: Commercial quality wood windows, aluminum clad exterior finish, natural wood interior finish, fixed transom and operable sash, glass and glazing, operating hardware, and insect screen.
C. Window Size: Contractor shall field verify window sizes shown on the schedule and order each window which will accommodate the window cavity, and also allow thermal movement of window unit.
2.2 COMPONENTS
A. Frame: Select softwood, water repellant, preservative-treated in accordance with NWWDA I.S 4. Interior exposed surfaces clear pine ready for transparent interior finish.
B. Aluminum Cladding Exterior Surface: Formed aluminum factory fit to profile or exterior exposed surface; factory finished fluorocarbon based multi-stage finish system (Kynar 500).
C. Sash Construction: Select softwood, water repellant, preservative treated in accordance with NWWDA I.S.4. Interior exposed surfaces clear pine. Exterior surfaces clad with aluminum, lap-jointed and sealed. Corners mortised and tenoned, glued and secured with metal fasteners. Sash thickness: 3 -11/16”.
D. Insulating Glass: Sealed triple pane units; conform with ASTM C1036.
1. Glazing: Gray tinted, argon-filled, multi –layered Low E tempered float glass.
2. Pane Thickness: Minimum 1/8 thick
3. Minimum Total Unit Thickness: 5/8 inch.
4. Internal tilt-only operable blinds, with crank-hand operator mounted on inside face of window frame.
E. Sills and Jambs: Where replacement sills and jambs are necessary, preservative-treated wood covered with break-formed aluminum similar to window clad cover. Where sills and jambs are re-used, cover with break-formed aluminum similar to window clad. Clad cover one piece full height and width of opening.
F. Stools: Protect and re-use the existing stools, where possible.
G. Window Hardware:
1. Sash lock: A single handle locking system operating positive-acting arms that reach out and pull sash into locked position: two unison-operated locks installed on frame height greater than 29 inches.
2. Operator: Worm-gear sash operator with hardened gears. Operator base to be zinc die-cast with painted finish. Operator linkage, hinge slide, and hinge arms to be 300 series stainless steel. Exposed fasteners to be stainless steel. .
3. Pulls: Manufacturer’s standard, or as selected by Government.
H. Insect Screen Frame: Aluminum frame of rectangular sections; fit with adjustable hardware; nominal size similar to operable glazed unit.
I. Insect Screens: Black vinyl-coated 18/16 mesh fiberglass screen cloth complying with FS L-S 125B and ANSI-SMA-1004, set in an aluminum frame fitted to the inside of window. Screen frame shall be baked enamel.
J. Operable Sash Weatherstripping - Dual: Resilient PVC material in a dual durometer design with welded corners, compressed between the frame and sash for positive seal on all four sides. Secondary PVC leaf-type weather stripping between edge of sash and frame.
2.3 ACCESSORIES
A.
Anchors: Hot-dipped galvanized.
2.4 MISCELLANEOUS WOOD REPLACMENT TRIM
A. Replace in-kind as shown on original construction drawings and as per field verification. Finish to match existing.
2.5 FABRICATION
A. Ensure joints and connections are flush, hairline, and weather-tight.
B. Finger joints not permitted in units intended for transparent finish.
C. Form sills in one piece. Slope sills for wash.
D. Furnish weather stop flange for perimeter of unit.
E. Fabricate components with minimum clearances and shim spacing around perimeter of assembly, yet allowing installation and dynamic movement of perimeter seal.
F. Arrange fasteners to be concealed from view.
G. Permit internal drainage weep holes and channels to migrate moisture to exterior. Provide internal drainage of glazing spaces to exterior through weep holes.
H. Assemble insect screen frame, miter and reinforced frame corners. Fit mesh taut into frame and secure. Fit frame with four spring loaded steel pin retainers.
I. Double weatherstrip operable units.
J. Factory install glass in window units in accordance with manufacturer’s standard method conforming with GANA Glazing Manual and to achieve performance criteria specified.
2.6 SHOP FINISHING
A. Exterior Surfaces: Aluminum-clad, tan as shown on Pella Manufacturers color pallet, or approved equal.
B. Screens and Frame: Color to match window frames.
C. Exposed Hardware: Baked enamel, color to match window frames.
2.7 FIELD FINISHING
A. Interior Window Surfaces: Wood, field finished with transparent materials. Oil-base stain with two-coat polyurethane finish. Color to be selected by Government.
B. Miscellaneous Replacement Wood Trim: Field finish in kind to match the existing finish.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Verify wall openings and adjoining air and vapor seal materials are ready to receive work of this section. Verify opening dimensions and clearances are as indicated on shop drawings.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. The contractor shall rework the window rough opening as necessary to accommodate the new window in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, and/or specified herein.
B. Attach window frame and shims to perimeter opening to accommodate construction tolerances and other irregularities.
C. Align window plumb and level, free of warp or twist. Maintain dimensional tolerances and alignment with adjacent work.
D. Install sills, and jamb fillers at necessary for the installation.
E. Provide thermal isolation where components penetrate or disrupt building insulation. Pack fibrous insulation in shim spaces at perimeter of assembly to maintain continuity of thermal barrier.
F. Coordinate the installation of break-formed aluminum clad finish on existing or new exposed wood window framing materials (window divider, sills/jamb extensions).
G. Coordinate attachment and seal of perimeter air and vapor barrier materials.
H. Install operating hardware.
3.3 ERECTION TOLERANCES
A. Maximum Variation from Level and from Plumb: 1/16 inch every 3 ft non-cumulative or 1/8 inch per 10 ft , whichever is less.
3.4 ADJUSTING
A. Adjust hardware for smooth operation and secure weather tight closure.
3.5 CLEANING
A. Remove protective material from factory-finished surfaces.
B. Remove labels and visible markings.
C. Wash surfaces by method recommended and acceptable to sealant and window manufacturer; rinse and wipe surfaces clean.
3.6 SCHEDULES
A. The Contractor shall reference the Drawing for details and other information regarding the original window installation. All wall and window cavity dimensions shall be field verified by the Contractor prior to ordering the window units.
