SECTION 07900

JOINT SEALERS

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section includes sealants and joint backing, precompressed foam sealers, hollow gaskets, and accessories.

B. Related Sections:

1.2 REFERENCES

A. ASTM C834 - Latex Sealing Compounds.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Products Data: Submit data indicating sealant chemical characteristics, performance criteria, substrate preparation, limitations, and color availability.

B. Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Submit special procedures, surface preparation, and perimeter conditions requiring special attention.

C. Warranty: Include coverage for installed sealants and accessories failing to achieve airtight seal, watertight seal, exhibit loss of adhesion or cohesion, and sealants which do not cure.

1.4 QUALIFICATIONS

A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing products specified in this section with minimum three years experience.

1.5 MOCKUP

A. Construct mockup of sealant joints in conjunction with window mockups specified in other sections.

B. Construct mockup with specified sealant types and with other components noted.

1. Determine preparation and priming requirements based on manufacturers recommendations; take action necessary for correction of failure of sealant tests on mockup.

2. Verify sealants, primers, and other components do not stain adjacent materials.

1.6 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Maintain temperature and humidity recommended by sealant manufacturer during and after installation.

1.7 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate Work with sections referencing this section.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 JOINT SEALERS

A. Manufacturers:

1. Dow Corning Corp: Model 791/795

2. GE Silicones: Silglaze II

3. Tremco: Exterior - Spectrum 2 / Tremsil 600; Interior – Latex 834

4. Pecora: Exterior - Model 895; Interior – Pecora AC-20

5. Substitutions: Provide complete manufactures catalog sheet information covering component specifications, product performance, and other salient characteristics that will satisfy review to determine equivalence.

B. Products Description:

1. High Performance General Purpose Exterior (Nontraffic): Silicone; ASTM C920, Grade NS, Class 25, Uses M, G, and A; single component.

a. Color: Standard colors matching finished surfaces.

b. Applications: Use for:

1) Joints between concrete/masonry and other materials.

2) Joints between wood frames and other materials.

2. General Purpose Interior Sealant: Acrylic emulsion latex; ASTM C834, single component, paintable.

a. Color: Standard colors matching finished surfaces.

b. Applications: Use for interior wall and ceiling control joints, joints between door and window frames and wall surfaces, and other interior joints for which no other type of sealant is indicated.

2.2 ACCESSORIES

A. Joint Backing: Round foam rod compatible with sealant; flexible open-cell compressible polyurethane rods and polyurethane tapes.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify substrate surfaces and joint openings are ready to receive work.

B. Verify joint backing and release tapes are compatible with sealant.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Remove loose materials and foreign matter impairing adhesion of sealant.

B. Perform preparation in accordance with manufacturers application instructions.

C. Protect elements surrounding work of this section from damage or disfiguration.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Perform installation in accordance with ASTM C1193.

1. Measure joint dimensions and size joint backers to achieve width-to-depth ratio, neck dimension, and surface bond area as recommended by manufacturer with joint backing rods a minimum of twice the diameter of the joint width.

B. Install bond breaker where joint backing is not used.

C. Install sealant free of air pockets, foreign embedded matter, ridges, and sags.

D. Apply sealant within recommended application temperature ranges. Consult manufacturer when sealant cannot be applied within these temperature ranges.

E. Tool joints concave.

F. Precompressed Foam Sealant: Do not stretch; avoid joints except at corners, ends, and intersections; install with face 1/8 to 1/4 inch (3 to 6 mm) below adjoining surface.

G. Compression Gaskets: Avoid joints except at ends, corners, and intersections; seal joints with adhesive; install with face 1/8 to 1/4 inch (3 to 6 mm) below adjoining surface.

3.4 CLEANING

A. Clean adjacent soiled surfaces.

3.5 PROTECTION OF INSTALLED CONSTRUCTION

A. Protect sealants until cured.
