Brown Mountain OHV Trail #3 Assessment Log 1

Brown Mountain OHV Trail #3 Assessment Log

Inspectors: Eric Johnson, Dwayne Stutzman Date assessed: January 30, 2010 Length: 2.2 miles Designed Use: Motorcycle Trail Class: Class 3 developed Average width: existing is 6’, design width is 3’ Surface: Eroded soil, clay and shale, rocky

This trail log illustrates items of work to be accomplished. The intent of the log is to give a description of the work, at a minimum; however it does not describe the full scope of the work nor identify every work item. Bidders must view the trail to assess full range of maintenance needs, access, and logistics of transporting imported materials. The Contractor shall maintain / improve the trail such that it conforms to current Forest Service standards. The primary goal of trail restoration is to establish positive drainage. Addition and restoration of grade dips are identified in the log at specific locations; however, it is expected that installation of many more grade dips will be required, over and above what is called for here. A minimum of 100 grade dips per mile is required.

Due to its use and location, many sections of the trail are incised. It contains grades of up to 35%. The soil is primarily decomposing granite with very little clay and therefore sandy in nature. The trail needs many grade dips, due to soil type. In areas fill and armoring material will need to be imported. The trail corridor needs clearing in places, with some hazard tree removal.

Areas with incised trail, restoration may include installing or enhancing s-curves to improve trail sinuosity to maximize positive drainage, reduce future erosion, and enhance user experience. A typical treatment of such segments may include filling the incised sections of trail in well-compacted lifts of suitable material and armoring with a compacted four-inch course of #4 RR ballast, or where possible shifting trail to alternate track and constructing new trail; then rehabilitating incised areas with lead-off ditches, check dams, and woody debris. To the greatest extent practical, solid bedrock surfaces, unsuitable for placement of fill materials, shall be made to drain to existing and/or new drainage features. Bid optional sections A & B fall into this category.

For armored approaches to stream crossings, armor both approaches at/above the high water mark with native or imported stone, as approved by inspector. Generally, armoring may require rip-rap or #4 RR ballast stone, some may require geo-textile and/or geo-grid;

coordinate specific materials with the Inspector.

Brown Mountain OHV Trail #3 Assessment Log 2

Close user trails, as indicated in the trail logs per ‘Obliteration of Abandoned Trailways’ specification. Place rocks, logs, branches, etc., to conceal the abandoned trailway and discourage future use.

The trail is severely braided (BRD) and eroded from station 64+40 to 78+76. In this section of trail, the optimal location is flagged in blue and recommendations are noted in the log. Where grade dips exist, they will be referred to in the log as rehab grade dip (RHGDL, RHGDR). Where grade dips need to be installed they will be referred to in the log as (GDL/GDR).

Addition and restoration of grade dips are identified in the log at specific locations;

however, it is expected that installation of many more grade dips will be required, over and above what is called for here. A minimum of 100 grade dips per mile is required.

Maintenance is to be performed on the existing trail to bring it up to current USDA Forest Service trail standards. This trail log begins at the intersection of Trail 5 with Trail 4 and continues until the intersection with Trail 6 (against one-way traffic). Work will include, but may not be limited to, restoration of the trail tread, restoring/installing grade dips and other drainage features, installing/extending lead-off ditches, filling/armoring entrenched areas, armoring water crossing approaches, brushing vegetation, and felling hazard trees.

Filling and armoring will be required in some areas (segments of incised trail, obliteration of braided trails, armored approaches to water crossings). Some materials for filling and armoring may be available on-site (from de-berming, grade dip installation), and within the trail corridor. However suitable materials may need to be imported. Generally, armoring may require rip-rap or #4 RR ballast stone, with some areas requiring geo-textile and/or geo-grid. Coordinate specific materials with the Inspector.

The corridor needs clearing from beginning to end. There are some hazard trees but due to ice storms there are many tree tops and limbs across the trail. There are no existing grade dips; addition of grade dips is required. The trail is of a gentle grade with only two short sections of 20%. Blazing is sparse and difficult to find. Braided trail is common but in short sections usually 20 or 30 feet to bypass bog or large rock. Braided trail is noted in the log as BRD TRL close L or R.

Maintenance is to be performed on the existing trail to bring it up to current USDA Forest Service trail standards. This trail log begins at the intersection of Trail 7 with Trail 8 and continues until the intersection with Trail 6. Work will include, but may not be limited to, restoration of the trail tread, restoring/installing grade dips and other drainage features, installing/extending lead-off ditches, filling/armoring entrenched areas, armoring water crossing approaches, brushing vegetation, and felling hazard trees.

Coordinate specific materials with the Inspector.

The trail is in fair to poor condition. There are many user created trails (BRD TRL) mostly to avoid small hazards or mud holes (MH). Blazing is poor and difficult to find. Due to ice storms there is a lot of debris in the trail. The trail is of a gentle grade with only short sections of up to 20%. There are many boggy or muddy areas which can be drained by simply punching through the berm which will be referred to in the log as punch berm to drain left or right (PBTD L or R).

Brown Mountain OHV Trail #9 Assessment Log

Inspector Name: Fred Lashley, Bruce Lowe Date Assessed: January 30, 2010 Length: 5.0 miles Trail Class: 3 Designed Use: ATV Average Width: 6’ Surface: Eroded soil, clay and shale, rocky

Access to the beginning of trail #9 is by following Trail #1 at the Parking and Shelter. The trail is one way.

The grades range with some slopes over 30%. There are approximately 358 grade dips that are fairly well placed, but all need cleaning and some need the run outs extended. The soils are thin and eroded.

The trail is mostly incised 2’-6’ and some areas have exposed bedrock. Vegetation is thin, small primarily cut over pine. There are some large rock outcrops and boulders, views are somewhat limited looking eastward. Some fill may be available on-site from the overburden berms created from the OHV use, however it will also be necessary to import suitable materials and stone. The primary repair is to machine blade, outslope trail and repair/fill and compact the grade dips. Work also includes crib wall construction. Banked turns should be repaired and kept intact- do not remove the berm of these turns as they are useful and enjoyable for riders.

Generally, in areas with incised, straight segments of trail, trail restoration shall include installing/enhancing curves to improve trail sinuosity to maximize positive drainage, reduce future erosion, and enhance user experience. A typical treatment of such segments will include filling the incised sections of trail in well-compacted lifts of suitable material and armoring with a compacted four-inch course of #4 RR ballast (with or without geo-textile and/or geo-grid as conditions dictate). To the greatest extent practical, solid bedrock surfaces, unsuitable for placement of fill materials, shall be made to drain to existing and/or new drainage features.

For armored approaches to stream crossings, armor both approaches at/above the high water mark w/geo-grid and riprap, unless otherwise indicated in trail log. Close user trails, as indicated in the trail logs per ‘Obliteration of Abandoned Trailways’ specification (see Standard Spec.). Place rocks, logs, branches, etc., to conceal the abandoned trailway and discourage future use. Use rocks and other materials that are available in the areas to be obliterated.
