North Fork John Day Ranger District SAMPLE DESIGN Quick Plot Stocking Surveys

Reforestation Stocking Survey; First Year Planting Survival; Quick Plots using 1/100 Acre Fixed Plot; No Variable Radius Plots.

Sample Design Remarks:

Sample ALL standing trees that are between 0.0’ and 4.9” DBH and at least 0.3’ in height on a 100th acre plot.

List a maximum of 4 Desirable trees, each on its own line of data. Four desirable trees will stock this plot. Denote these trees with a “D” in the User Determined field.

Skip a line before entering excess trees. Record data for a maximum of 10 live excess trees per plot unless additional tree species, not yet encountered on the plot, exist. List one tree for each new species encountered. Excess trees may be group tallied when tree data is identical. Designate these trees with an “E” in the User Determined field.

Record all dead planted trees and a maximum of 5 dead natural trees. Dead trees will be pulled up, if possible, to determine cause of death, then spray painted with orange spray paint. Designate dead trees with “DEAD” in the User Determined field

Administrative Notes Questions to answer from this exam. • What is the density of Desirable Trees as measured by average trees per acre?

What is the density of Total Trees per acre?

• Identify understocked areas in the stand.

• Does this stand require additional planting or protection?

• What are the relative percentages of damage attributed to Wild Animals (41), Domestic Animals (42), Insects (10), Disease (19), Abiotic Damage (50), Human Activities (70), Unknown (90).

• Relative percent of planted and natural seedlings/saplings.

• Describe species and abundance of germinants in the stand.

Administrative Reference Required by the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974.

P.L. 93-378, 88 Stat. 476, as amended. Sec. 3 (6)(d)(1).

Timing Following completion of the first growing season; planted seedlings.

Activity Database Exam Designation(s) ..Ref Stock Exam:3yr WICode 34102 Exam Data Disposition [X ] FSVeg [ ] PolyVeg Exam Data Retention Time Stored until stand is declared Reforestation Established. Usually by age 7-10 years when majority of saplings >4 ½’ and free to grow.

Reforestation Stocking Survey; Third and Fifth Year Planting Survival; Extensive Plots using 1/100 Acre Fixed Plot; No Variable Radius Plots.

Sample Design Remarks:

Sample ALL standing trees that are between 0.0’ and 4.9” DBH and at least 0.5’ in height on a 100th acre plot.

List a maximum of 4 Growth Sample Trees (GST), each on its own line of data. These will meet the same criteria as Desirable trees.

Designate GST trees with a “G” in the Site/Growth Trees field and ALSO as Desirable trees with a “D” in the User Determined field.

Record age, height, and 3 year height growth for these trees.

Plot procedure on the North Fork John Day Ranger District:

1. Contractor shall reference stocking surveys to a readily identifiable point on the ground. The Contractor shall determine the spacing to be used to establish the number of plots needed for each unit surveyed (see North Fork John Day Stocking Survey Unit Data Sheet). The Contractor shall mark the reference point (R.P.) for each unit with one strip of plastic pink-and-black striped flagging and one strip of chartreuse green flagging. Each strip of flagging shall be a minimum of 24" long. The Contractor shall document the unit number, distance, and azimuth from the reference point to the first plot within the unit on the flagging and on the back of the unit map along with a description of the RP.

2. Contractor shall note the direction of travel for each transect line, as well as between lines, and the distance in chains between plots. This shall be noted on the on the unit maps provided.

3. Contractor shall identify plot centers with a strip of flagging securely tied to a stick 24 inches high and positioned upright in plot center. The plot number shall be written on the flag. The Contractor may substitute pin flags for plot centers. In addition, contractor shall mark an "X" on the ground, indicating plot center, using fluorescent orange spray paint. Secondary plot markings shall consist of one strip of chartreuse green flagging and another of pink-and-black-striped flagging tied on trees or brush opposite one another with the plot center in between, if possible. Length of flagging for plot center and secondary plot markings shall be a minimum of 18 inches and shall be hung a minimum of 24 inches above the ground surface.

4. Contractor shall determine limiting distances for seedlings by holding the tape parallel to the ground and measuring to the center of the seedling stem. Limiting distance for saplings and larger trees is the horizontal distance from plot center to the face of the tree at DBH (DBH is measured at a height of 4.5 feet from the ground surface on the uphill side of the tree).

5. Contractor shall mark desirable trees on the ground near the base of the stem with fluorescent orange spray paint. No paint is permitted on the tree itself.

6. If a tree falls on the edge of a plot and is found to be out, contractor shall spray a paint line on the plot-center side of the tree to indicate to the inspector that this tree was out and not missed. Likewise, the Contractor shall identify borderline trees found to be inside the plot by a paint line sprayed on the ground on the outside plot perimeter.

7. Contractor shall record data on individual trees, starting at North and progressing in a clockwise direction around the plot center. The Contractor shall record tree data for those planted seedlings > 4 inches in height, natural seedlings > 6 inches in height, and saplings measuring < 5 inches in diameter at breast height (DBH). The Contractor shall make exceptions for trees planted in current year's contract with heights under the 4 inch requirement but otherwise healthy. Contractor shall document the approximate number of germinates less than 4 inches in height in Plot Remarks.

8. Contractor shall record on a separate line the data pertaining to each desirable tree. Each plot has a potential maximum of 4 adequately spaced desirable trees. First, contractor shall list all desirable tree information in plot data. After skipping a line, he shall record excess tree data clockwise from North following all desirable tree data. The contractor shall record information for up to, but not exceeding, ten excess trees per plot unless trees of a species not encountered exist on the remainder of the plot. Contractor shall record tree information for the first tree in any species not listed in the first ten trees. Contractor may group together excess trees with identical tree information codes on a single line of data.

9. Contractor shall spray paint all dead seedlings encountered on a plot to facilitate ease of location. Contractor shall attempt to determine cause of death by examining both above and below ground portions of the tree, whenever possible. If the Contractor has met the number of required trees before encountering the dead trees, he shall discuss the dead trees in the remarks section or, if planted trees, document them as additional trees.
