APPENDIX B TIMBER REMOVAL SPECIFICATIONS AMENDMENT 8 Malheur NF 10-year Stewardship Project

SOLICITATION AG- 04KK-S-13-9000

1. The end result is to reduce the risk of severe wildfire by reducing surface fuels, ladder fuels and crown bulk density. Also the goal is to maintain a vigorous, healthy stand of trees which will provide good visual quality and a future late/old structural stage of stand development.

Timber in the following units is Designation by Prescription (DxP). Refer to the Prescriptions and the Timber Removal Guidelines provided.

Units: All units in the MD subdivision 7224 Acres

Generally:

· Leave all trees 21.0 inches DBH and greater.

· Trees less than 7” DBH will be considered timber subject to agreement.

· For Basal area spacing refer to project area map (Basal Area Table) and the Basal Area variability Table at the end of this prescription.

· Species preference WL/PP/DF/LP/WF/GF.

· Leave all hardwoods.

· Leave dominant and co-dominant conifers.

· Leave conifers with crowns that do not touch.

· Leave snags standing. If they must be felled, they will be retained in place.

· Trees < 21” DBH shall be removed within 2 times the drip line of trees over 21” DBH, and that do not exhibit “Old Growth Characteristics”

· Trees that have a common stump should be either both cut or both left. If left, they shall be treated as a single tree for spacing.

· Wildlife areas will consist of unthinned areas, clumps, small diameter material, and Rocky areas.

· “Wolfy” trees, trees with poor form, broken tops or numerous large limbs will not be cut. Typically these trees are not of commercial value.

· Trees with cavities will not be cut.

· See definitions for protection of Mountain Mahogany.

· Aspen trees, stems, or sprouts shall have trees less than 21” DBH removed: 1) south side to 150 feet, 2) east and west side to 100 feet, 3) north side to 66 feet. These areas shall also be mapped and given to the COR.

· Provide a 50 foot buffer on all known populations of Cordilleran Sedge.

· Less than 5% of leave trees shall show mechanical damage.

· Stump Height is 12” or less

· Leave all trees within 150 feet of springs, bogs, seeps, or elk wallows.

· 1-4 clumps/ac of 3-6 trees greater than 12” DBH within an approximate area of 20 feet by 20 feet.

When a contractor begins work in any of the MD units, the contractor will sample mark 3 units with 5 acres each. This mark will be approved in writing by the COR before any felling of trees takes place. Leave Tree Marking (LTM) will be completed with Orange paint.
