3.3 CLEARING AND GRUBBING

A. Where clearing is required, clear, grub, remove and dispose all debris, trees, snags, downed timber, stumps, roots, brush, and other protruding vegetative material within the clearing limits, not designated to remain, except the following:

1. Undisturbed stumps outside roads and pads. Stumps at the toe of road and pad embankments may remain and shall be cut off below the root collar.

2. Undisturbed stumps in embankment areas, provided they do not extend more than 12 inches above the original ground (measured from the uphill side) nor closer than 2 feet to the finished subgrade or 1 foot to any slope surface; and they do not interfere with the placement or compaction of embankments.

3. Vegetation less than 3 feet in height and less than 3 inches in diameter that is within the clearing limits but beyond the roadway and not in a decking area and that does not interfere with sight distance along the road.

B. Where excavation is necessary, grub the root mat to the underlying soil and remove stumps and roots.

Within the roadway limits remove stumps with less than 24 inches of cover.

C. Except in areas to be excavated, stump holes shall be backfilled with suitable materials and compacted in accordance with the specifications.

D. Do not damage vegetation outside of the clearing limits. Remove and dispose of trees with major roots exposed by construction that are rendered unstable. B. Areas requiring end haul and end haul disposal areas will be identified on ground and approved in advance. Dispose of unsuitable or excess material according to Section 312300, Part 3.2, subsection D.

C. Place rocks that are too large to be incorporated in the embankment outside the traveled way on the downhill side so that they will not roll, obstruct drainage, or hinder roadbed use and maintenance.

Maximum particle cannot exceed half the depth of embankment layer.

D. Place material by side casting and end dumping to a minimum depth needed for operation of spreading and hauling equipment and minimum depths as shown on typical cross- sections. Minimum embankment depth in areas where prepared ground surfaces are solid rock is 12 inches. Construct solid embankments with adequate compaction by working smaller rock and fines in with larger rocks to fill the voids.

E. Produce and use borrow material from approved sources, and remove and treat unsuitable or excess material.

F. Operate loaded hauling and spreading equipment uniformly over full width of each layer.

G. Leave slopes that are to be seeded in a roughened condition.

H. Use a crawler tractor with a dozer blade to shape and finish the roadbed. Provide for drainage of surface water, unless otherwise designated. Do not permit individual rocks in the roadbed to protrude more than 4 inches above the subgrade. A motor grader finish is not required.

I. Do not encroach on stream channels, wetlands, or extend beyond right-of-way or easement limits.

3.5 COMPACTION

Conform to FP-03 Section 204.11 and the following Forest Service Supplemental Specifications:

Delete the first paragraph and replace it with the following:

For compaction according to method (a), (b), or (c), use AASHTO T 27 to determine the amount of material retained on a Number. 4 sieve. For compaction methods (d) or (e) no sieve test is required.

Add the following compaction methods:

(d) Layer Placement Method (Hauling and Spreading Equipment). Place material by end dumping to the minimum depth needed for operation of spreading equipment. Level and smooth each embankment layer before placing the next layers. Operate hauling and spreading equipment uniformly over the full width of each layer. Construct a solid embankment with adequate compaction by working smaller rock and fines in with the larger rocks to fill the voids, and by operating hauling and spreading equipment uniformly over the full width of each layer as the embankment is constructed.

(e) Layer Placement (Roller Compaction) Method. Place material by end dumping to the minimum depth needed for operation of spreading equipment. Adjust the moisture content of the material to obtain a mass that will not visibly deflect under the load of the hauling and spreading equipment. Operate compaction equipment over the full width of each layer until visible deformation of the layer ceases or, when a sheepsfoot roller is used, the roller “walks out” of the layer. Make at least three complete passes.

3.6 OVERBUILDING AND LANDSCAPE PROTECTION

A. Confine excavation and fill to within the clearing limits to protect the native landscape.

3.7 GRADING

A. Uniformly grade areas within all work areas and establish natural transitions to adjacent undisturbed surfaces as approved. Finish surfaces free from irregularities and abrupt changes in grade.

B. Grade surface under concrete slab smooth and even, free of voids, compacted as specified and to required elevation. Grade areas adjacent to concrete slab to drain away from shelter and to prevent ponding as approved.

SECTION 320100

The material must provide a solid mass with minimal voids after compaction. Maximum particle size: 6 inches.

Do not use material that breaks up when alternately frozen and thawed or wetted and dried. Obtain aggregate gradation by crushing, screening, and blending processes as necessary.

PART 3- CONSTRUCTION

3.1 General.

A. Prepare the subgrade according to Section 312300.

B. Correct all ruts and soft yielding spots by loosening and removing unsuitable material and adding suitable material. See Section 312300 Part 2.1 for definitions of suitable and unsuitable material. Reshape and recompact the affected areas.

C. Obtain written approval of the subgrade before placing aggregate.

3.2 Mixing and Spreading.

A. Mix the aggregate and adjust the moisture content to obtain a uniform mixture with a moisture content within

2 percent of the optimum moisture content. Spread and shape the mixture on the prepared surface in a uniform layer with no segregation of size.

B. Except for Shot Rock, do not place the mixture in a layer exceeding 6 inches in compacted thickness. When more than one layer is necessary, compact each layer before placing the next layer. Route hauling and leveling equipment uniformly over the full width and length of each layer to minimize rutting or uneven compaction.

3.3 Compaction.

A. Adjust the moisture content of the aggregate to a uniform moisture content suitable for compaction.

B. Compact each layer full width. Roll from the sides to the center, parallel to the centerline of the road. Along curbs, headers, walls, and all places not accessible to the roller, compact the material with approved tampers or compactors.

C. Compact the aggregate using one of the following methods as specified:

Compaction A. Operating spreading and hauling equipment over the full width of the travelway.

Compaction B. Operate rollers and compact as specified in FP-03 Subsection 204.11(a)(1).

Compaction C. Moisten or dry the aggregate to a uniform moisture content between 5 and 7 percent based on total dry weight of the mixture. Operate rollers and compact as specified in FP-03 Subsection 204.11(a)(1).

Compaction D. Compact to a density of at least 95 percent of the maximum density, as determined by AASHTO T 99, method C or D.

Compaction E. Compact to a density of at least 96 percent of the maximum density, as determined by the Modified Marshall Hammer Compaction Method (available upon request from USDA Forest Service, Regional Materials Engineering Center, P.O. Box 7669, Missoula, MT 59807).

Compaction F. Compact to a density of at least 95 per-cent of the maximum density, as determined by AASHTO T 180, method C or D.

Compaction G. Compact to a density of at least 100 percent of the maximum density as determined by the Modified Marshall Hammer Compaction Method (available upon request from USDA Forest Service, Regional Materials Engineering Center, P.O. Box 7669, Missoula, MT 59807).

D. For all compaction methods, blade the surface of each layer during the compaction operations to remove irregularities and produce a smooth, even surface. When a density requirement is specified, determine the in place density and moisture content according to AASHTO T 310 or other approved test procedures.

3.4 Surface Tolerance.

A. Shape the surface to the required template and check the surface with a 10-foot straightedge. Defective areas are surface deviations in excess of ½ inch in 10 feet between any two contacts of the straightedge with the surface.

B. Correct all defective areas by loosening the material, adding or removing material, reshaping, and compacting.

3.5 Thickness and Width Requirements

C. Thickness requirements: The maximum variation from the compacted specified thickness is ½ inch. The compacted thickness is not consistently above or below the specified thickness and the average thickness of 4 random measurements for any ½ mile of road segment is within + ¼ inch of the specified thickness.

D. Width requirements: The maximum variation from the specified width will not exceed +12 inches at any point. The compacted width is not consistently above the specified width and the average of any four random measurements along any ½ mile of road segment is within +4 inches of the specified width.
