About this file

This Addendum No. 2, issued September 21, 2026, modifies the contract documents for the Window Replacement project at the Seigel Health Technologies Building (Building C), 777 Elsbree Street, Fall River, Massachusetts, under Bristol Community College's administration (Project No. M-01-27). The addendum replaces technical specifications in Section 04 20 00 Unit Masonry in their entirety and revises two renovation elevation sheets (A2.1 and A2.2). The document addresses eleven requests for information (RFIs) that clarify masonry work scope, including the treatment of damaged brick and concrete masonry units (CMU), repair responsibilities at window intersections, repointing quantities, and grouting requirements for hollow metal door frames. Key clarifications specify that unit price quantities of 50 each for brick and CMU represent only pre-existing damaged units to be replaced, with any additional damage caused by the contractor's demolition methods to be replaced at no cost to the Owner. The addendum provides detailed specifications for masonry materials, installation standards, quality assurance requirements, and testing procedures, including mortar types, joint reinforcement specifications, and control joint installations. Bidders must acknowledge this addendum on their bid forms by entering the addendum number in the appropriate space on the Form for General Bid and Form for Sub-Bid.

The specification section establishes that masonry work requires a filed sub-bid pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 149 and Chapter 30, with all work governed by public bidding requirements. Material specifications include provisions for concrete masonry units with minimum 2,000 psi compressive strength, Type S mortar for most applications, and grout with minimum 2,000 psi compressive strength. The owner will engage an independent testing agency to perform preconstruction testing and field quality control inspections at no cost to the contractor, with retesting of failed materials at the contractor's expense. The specification includes comprehensive requirements for delivery and storage of materials, protection of masonry during construction, cold and hot weather construction procedures, and final cleaning using proprietary acidic cleaners. Tolerances are established for dimensional variations, plumb and level requirements, and joint thickness, with all waste materials to be separated, salvaged, recycled, and disposed of in accordance with Massachusetts Waste Ban regulations.

Throughout the drawings (e.g. D1.1 Demolition Key #9, D2.2 elevation 5, D3.1 all sections, A3.1 all sections), there are notes to remove and replace cracked or damaged brick. Can we assume that the quantity in the unit price section of 50 each is all the brick to be removed and replaced on the project? If not, can a quantity be provided? It is not possible to determine what brick will be damaged due to demolition.

Response: (Prime Designer) Quantity listed under Unit Prices is the quantity to be owned under the bid for existing damaged brick masonry units. Brick/CMU that is “damaged due to demolition” as a result of the contractor’s demolition methods is excluded from the unit price quantity and shall be replaced by the contractor with new masonry units at no additional cost to the Owner.

E. Built-in Work: As construction progresses, build in items specified in this and other Sections. Fill in solidly with masonry around built-in items.

F. Where built-in items are to be embedded in cores of hollow masonry units, place a layer of metal lath, wire mesh, or plastic mesh in the joint below and rod mortar or grout into core.

G. Fill cores in hollow concrete masonry units with grout 24 inches under bearing plates, beams, lintels, posts, and similar items, unless otherwise indicated.

UNIT MASONRY 04 20 00 - 12 of 16

H. Build non-load-bearing interior partitions full height of story to underside of solid floor or roof structure above, unless otherwise indicated.

1. Install compressible filler in joint between top of partition and underside of structure above.

2. Fasten partition top anchors to structure above and build into top of partition. Grout cells of CMUs solidly around plastic tubes of anchors and push tubes down into grout to provide 1/2-inch clearance between end of anchor rod and end of tube. Space anchors 48 inches o.c., unless otherwise indicated.

3. At fire-rated partitions, treat joint between top of partition and underside of structure above to comply with Division 07 Section "Fire- Resistive Joint Systems."

3.05 MORTAR BEDDING AND JOINTING

A. Lay concrete masonry units as follows:

1. With face shells fully bedded in mortar and with head joints of depth equal to bed joints.

2. With webs fully bedded in mortar in all courses of piers, columns, and pilasters.

3. With webs fully bedded in mortar in grouted masonry, including starting course on footings.

4. With entire units, including areas under cells, fully bedded in mortar at starting course on footings where cells are not grouted.

B. Lay solid masonry units with completely filled bed and head joints; butter ends with sufficient mortar to fill head joints and shove into place. Do not deeply furrow bed joints or slush head joints.

C. Tool exposed joints slightly concave when thumbprint hard, using a jointer larger than joint thickness, unless otherwise indicated.

3.06 MASONRY JOINT REINFORCEMENT

A. General: Install entire length of longitudinal side rods in mortar with a minimum cover of 5/8 inch on exterior side of walls, 1/2 inch elsewhere. Lap reinforcement a minimum of 6 inches.

1. Space reinforcement not more than 16 inches o.c.

2. Space reinforcement not more than 8 inches o.c. in foundation walls and parapet walls.

3. Provide reinforcement not more than 8 inches above and below wall openings and extending 12 inches beyond openings.

a. Reinforcement above is in addition to continuous reinforcement.

B. Interrupt joint reinforcement at control and expansion joints, unless otherwise indicated.

C. Provide continuity at wall intersections by using prefabricated T-shaped units.

D. Provide continuity at corners by using prefabricated L-shaped units.
