Questions from vendors for DNR 21*07 SP Visitor Center Septic Construction
Q.1. At the Canyon Rim Center, do we have to use the second manhole from the building, or can we put our tanks before that manhole?
A. There is flexibility when moving tanks/leach field just as long as it’s not too far from the original percolation locations. Installer must make sure to maintain at least 1/8” drop per foot from the facility and the tank. Installer shall ensure that the appropriate risers are located on the tanks and that there is easy access to snake the main line if needed (cleanout).
Summers County Sanitarian will inspect the install prior to the installer covering the system
up. Contractor shall meet the Sanitarian prior to installation to go over details, and then at time of inspection. Contractor shall complete the required applications and associated paperwork. WVDNR will pay the permit fees.
Q.2. If we have to use the second manhole and elevation from our tanks to our drain fields is an issue, are we able to pump out of the septic tanks?
A. No pumps will be allowed.
Q.3. At Canyon Rim Center, do the two tanks go in tandem? Do we need to put in a flow splitter to service the two drain fields?
A. The septic tanks do go in tandem. A simple bull valve is needed so that half of the drain field can rest while the other half is being utilized.
Q.4. Are we able to use distribution boxes on the trenched drain fields, or do we have to use serial distribution?
A. Serial distribution is the preferred method, but distribution boxes may be used.
Q.5. Has a 182-A already been completed? If it has or has not are there any other permits that would need to be done?
A. Only the percolation times have been reported. The 182-A application will need to be filled out for each location. The permit fee of $180 per application will be paid by the WV DNR. Once the applications are turned in to the Summers County Health Department, a permit to install will be issued for each. Installer shall complete the forms and submit to Health Department. There are no other known permits required of the installer.
Q.6. Has an engineer’s estimate been done for this project?
A. An engineer’s estimate will not be published.
Q.7. Will we have to complete another utility locate?
A. Yes. Contractor is required by law to call West Virginia 811 (https://wv811.com/) before you dig. Contractor shall also contact the local Park office to locate park owned utilities, facilities and hazards.
Q.8. What needs done with the cleared trees at the Canyon Rim Center?
A. Trees identified as needing to be cut must be approved by Park Management prior to cutting.
Small trees and limbs may be able to be mulched or discarded onsite. Larger trees shall be felled, cut, and located as discussed with Park Management. Park may wish to use some for firewood stockpile.
Q.9. Can we put another penetration in the manhole at the Recreation Center or will a different manhole be needed to change direction?
A. Contractor may utilize the existing manholes to change flow directions. Completed installation shall be watertight and flow freely.
