About this file

This document is a standard specification published by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), specifically the Standard Specification for Sodium Chloride (AASHTO Designation: M 143-14), technically revised in 2014 and editorially revised in 2022. The specification covers sodium chloride (rock salt) used for pre-treatment and deicing of road surfaces, road construction, and maintenance applications. It defines two types of sodium chloride: Type I (used for deicing pavement surfaces and aggregate stabilization) with two grades, and Type II (used in aggregate stabilization and non-deicing applications). The specification also includes requirements for sodium chloride in solid form and brine, providing detailed guidelines for chemical composition, physical properties, sampling, testing, packaging, and marking.

The document establishes strict chemical and physical requirements for sodium chloride, mandating a minimum of 95 percent sodium chloride (NaCl) content and specifying grading requirements for different particle sizes. It outlines comprehensive sampling and testing procedures, including lot size determination, sample collection methods, and acceptance criteria. The specification allows for the use of anticaking agents and provides flexibility for agencies to establish additional moisture requirements. A notable technical detail is the recommended brine concentration of 23.3 percent NaCl by weight, with a phase diagram illustrating the narrow range of effectiveness as concentration varies. The document is designed to provide a standardized approach for transportation agencies purchasing and using sodium chloride for winter road maintenance and other infrastructure applications.
