About this file
This document consists of questions and answers related to an RFQ (Request for Quote) for SR Photon Absorbers for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The key details are:
- The solicitation number is AA-2024-05, and the response is due on Friday July 5, 2024.
- The RFQ includes requirements for e-beam welding or TIG welding of the fiducial posts and cooling channel tubes, as well as helium leak testing while the absorbers are under vacuum and with high pressure water in the cooling circuit. Alternatively, high pressure helium in the cooling circuit is acceptable instead of water for the leak testing.
- The step file for drawing AL-1636-0076B has been made available on the Google Drive folder referenced in the document.
- This RFQ is being issued by the Department of Energy for the fabrication of the SR Photon Absorbers for the ALS-U upgrade project.

Questions for Clarification
SR PHOTON ABSORBERS
RFQ # AA-202-05SR
1. There is a requirement for e-beam welding of these photon absorbers: for the fiducial posts and for the cooling channel tubes. We prefer to do this with TIG welding. Can this be acceptable?
Answer: Yes, the fiducial posts can be tig welded.
2. There is a requirement to perform a helium leak test while the photon absorbers are in vacuum and while they have a high pressure of water in the cooling circuit. Can you please explain this procedure just so it’s fully clear to us what we need to do? A brief description is sufficient.
Answer: The objective is to perform a He leak check while the absorber is in its operational state(cooling pressurised with water and under vacuum). The procedure will be to mount the absorber to a suitable test chamber, connect the water to the cooling circuit and then perform He leak test.
3. We also would like to know if, when performing the leak test mentioned in question 2, we can simply use high pressure helium in the cooling circuit instead of using high pressure water - and look for a leak of helium? This could be higher sensitivity to performing the test with water, and also in the case there is a leak we do not risk damaging our vacuum systems with water ingress. Please confirm if this is acceptable.
Answer: This is acceptable. In addition to the cooling circuit being pressurised with He, He must also be sprayed on the external surface of the absorber.
4. Can you please provide the step file for AL-1636-0076B? The one uploaded to the system appears to be incorrect.
Answer: AL-1636-0076B step file is added to the Google Drive at the following web address:
