About this file

This document provides specifications and regulations for Map 7 of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, which details the 10-mile river stretch between Highway 70 and Highway 8 in Wisconsin. Key details include allowable boating and paddling regulations such as slow-no wake zones within 100 feet of other vessels, prohibited use of personal watercraft, and mandatory life jacket wear. Camping regulations specify designated campsite usage on a first-come basis with a 3-night maximum and group size limits. Fishing and general safety regulations are also outlined, along with resource protection guidelines prohibiting collecting mussels or artifacts. The map identifies access points, campgrounds, and other river features between Highway 70 and Highway 8 to aid navigation of this scenic riverway stretch.

National Park Service St. Croix National Scenic Riverway

Highway 70 to Highway 8 St. Croix River Map 7:

In This Stretch

• Shallow waters create sandbars in summer in some areas of this stretch. Careful reading of the river will help you avoid walking.

• A short series of rapids exists in the area of Stevens Creek Landing.

• The uneven river bottom at Old Railroad Landing can make currents erratic.

• The river narrows at the old Nevers Dam site, and it can be deceptively turbulent in this area.

The 10-mile section upstream of the hydroelectric dam near the St. Croix River Visitor Center is lake-like and called the Indian Head Flowage. This is commonly used by houseboats, fishing boats, and pontoons.

There is a 3.1 mile portage around the dam through Taylors Falls, Minnesota. See Map 8 for directions.

The renowned smallmouth bass fishery on the upper part of this river stretch reflects the quality of the habitat and the clean water. The slower water behind the dam adds lake fish to the diver-sity of species in the park.
