About this file

This is an ASTM International standard specification (A 702–89, Reapproved 2006) for steel fence posts and assemblies manufactured from hot-wrought sections. The specification establishes requirements for line posts and assemblies used in field and line fencing applications, covering posts available in T, channel, U, or Y cross-sectional shapes that are furnished either painted or galvanized. All weights are stated in inch-pound units with SI unit conversions provided for information only.

The specification details material requirements using Steels A, B, or C as defined in referenced ASTM standards, with specific yield point and tensile strength criteria for each steel type outlined in Table 1. Posts shall be fabricated with nominal dimensions of approximately 1⅜ inches wide, 1⅜ inches deep, and ⅜ inches thick, with permissible variations allowed. Line posts must include corrugations, knobs, notches, holes, or studs to facilitate wire engagement and be equipped with anchor plates (unless otherwise specified) positioned 14, 16, or 18 inches from the post bottom. Standard post lengths range from 5 to 10 feet in 1-foot increments, with weight tolerances of ±5 percent. Assemblies consisting of uprights and braces must conform to specified angle sizes and weights. Wire fasteners shall be zinc-coated steel wire of at least 0.120 inches diameter. The specification requires that furnished posts meet workmanship standards, be properly finished (painted or galvanized per Specification A 123/A 123M), pass visual inspection for surface defects, undergo tensile strength or hardness testing, and comply with sampling and rejection protocols detailed in Sections 9 and 10. Certification of compliance is required when specified in purchase orders, and packaging and shipment shall follow ASTM A 700 practices and applicable military or federal standards.
