Statement of Work Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail

Pack, Move, and Transport Museum Artifacts from the Selma Interpretive Center to the Tabernacle

Baptist Church

Scope of Work

Historical Background

Each of the structures at 2,4, and 6 Broad Street, as part of the Old Town Historic District, and adjacent to the Water Street Historic District, contribute to the overall character of the downtown Selma area and the immediate historic districts. The structures at 4 and 6 Broad Street and the extant braced façade at 8/10 Broad Street, are examples of the typical two-story brick masonry facades found throughout the downtown. Noted in the National Register nomination as representative of the “vague Italianate association” typified by the late 19th Century timeframe.

The original commercial structures at 8/10 Broad Street and 1119 Water Street were demolished and collapsed, respectively, leaving little existing fabric. Currently, this project has an interpretive design component that is handled by the Harpers Ferry Center (HFC) and their separate Design-Build will perform Architectural Tenant Improvements within the footprint of the exhibit areas to support their contract.

Description

This project will consist of a two-phase process: Phase One will require a Contractor to inventory all panels and collection objects from the Selma Interpretive Center prior to their removal from the property. The panels and artifacts will need to be packed to withstand transport for the period of performance. The first layer of packing material used in direct contact with the objects and panels must be archival with neutral ph. The next layer will be a cushioning layer capable of absorbing shock and vibration during the transport. The final layer will be the protective shell that consists of minimum housing of two-ply corrugated board, a crate fabricated with MDO, a mold polyethylene crate or other protective packing material.

Throughout the loading process, the Contractor will provide one staff member to attend the truck whenever the cargo bay doors are open and /or unlocked. During transit, the truck will be attended to by a Contractor’s employee who will be always in contact.

Phase Two will require the Contractor to transport the panels and objects to the Tabernacle Baptist Church, which is located at 1431 Broad Street, Selma, Alabama, 36701. The objects will be unpacked, uncrated/unwrapped, and installed in their designated exhibition location as directed by the Museum Specialist. The Museum Specialist shall check each inventory sheet against the contents as the objects are unwrapped and placed in their display location. During all phases of this project, the contractor is responsible for all labor, material, supplies, and transport for the packing, moving, delivering, and installation of panels and artifacts from the Selma Interpretive Center to Tabernacle Baptist Church.

All work will be performed according to standards for handling, packing, and shipping as outlined in the National Park Service Museum Handbook.
