Questions and Answers From Pre-Bid Meeting
#9609 Silver Stem Harvest Operation
Q1: Can Mastication units may be treated by way of pulling, piling, and burning piles if contractor has the appropriate equipment to do so?
A: Yes. Bidder must indicate that they would be treating the area as described above rather than by mastication.
Q2: What is OPRD’s definition of a special mill log?
A: Special Mill logs are defined as having gross diameter of at least 16”, gross length of at least 17’, and
Surface having sound tight knots and knot indicators not exceeding 1.5” in diameter and numbering not more than an average of one per foot of log length. Information from the Westside Log Scaling and
Grading Bureaus Handbook.
Q3: Are the landing locations indicated on the Exhibit A map able to be placed in different locations?
A: Landing locations are up for negotiation. The 16 landings indicated in the contract are an estimate of what would be needed for an approximate 600-foot skid. Amount, size, and location of landings can be negotiated and finalized during the Pre-operations Meeting with the Forester in charge of operations.
Q4: What are the rules on cutting/leaving cut/leave trees?
A: All trees designated as “cut trees” shall be cut and treated by either removed as a merchantable product or by treating it as slash. “Leave trees” may be removed to facilitate operations upon approval of the forester in charge of operations.
Q5: Who gets approval to burn piles?
A: Contractor is responsible for getting approval, from appropriate smoke management agency, for pile burning activities and must coordinate efforts with OPRD as well.
Q6: What is the expectation for slash treatment?
A: Within the thinning units the slash may be left in the units, with the exception of Unit 9 where the majority of the slash is expected to be removed to the landing, piled, and burned. Within the clear-cut units, the operator is expected to use a slash rake or bucket with a thumb to pile slash as to leave clear planting surface to allow for a 15’X15’ planting dimension.
Q7: What is the conversion factor used to convert weight to board foot for Chip and Saw wood?
A: 1,111.09 (tons (from cruise)) * 2,000 (lbs/ton) = 2,222,180 (lbs) / 4,120 (lbs/cord of green fir) = 539.39
(cords) * 500 (bdft/cord) = 269,682.04 (bdft) / 1000 = 269.68 MBF
Q8: is there a charge for pulp wood?
A: No charge for pulpwood removed from operation area. Bid is based on Chip and Saw logs and better.
