About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding the existing drinking water systems at Wallops Flight Facility. It provides details on the dimensions, materials, and configurations of the water storage tanks, distribution pipes, and chlorination equipment. It notes that the Main Base storage tank is oversized, resulting in lengthy water detention times of 7-8 days. The goal of the project is to reduce initial chlorine dosing and add a boost at the distribution system entry point to maintain disinfectant residuals while minimizing disinfection byproduct formation. The existing chlorine analyzer samples after the Main Base storage tank. Drawings are attached but field verification of conditions is required. The document provides relevant technical specifications but does not include information on required products or services for a procurement.

Questions and Answers
1. What is the volume of the water storage tanks for Main Base and Wallops Island drinking water systems?
MB - 500,000 gal - 80' dia x 14' concrete
WI - 75,000 gal - 29' dia x 16' steel
2. What are the approximate dimensions of the water storage tanks? See 1
3. From what material are the storage tanks made? See 1
4. Are there any mixing systems within the storage tanks?
MB tank has a spray aeration system with a maximum recirculation rate of 300 gpm.
5. Is the fire suppression system associated with each drinking water system stagnant or recirculating
Both systems are combined PW/FP systems with the majority of the distribution grid looped.
6. From what material are the main raw water pipes made of?
Mostly DI, but can vary. See attachment for chlorination vault.
7. From what material are the treated drinking water distribution pipe made?
Majority is DI, however several other materials are present. See attachment for details on water plant.
8. What are the pipe sizes for the raw water lines?
See attachment for details on water plant.
9. From what material are the existing chlorine dosing lines made?
PVC , See attachment
10. What are the sizes of the existing chlorine dosing lines?
3/4"-1", See attachment
11. In the statement of work (1.0), water age is identified as an issue; can you please give more explanation? Is the current storage tank or stored water oversized leading to longer detention time?
Water storage tank on MB is sized for deluge fire suppression systems. This system is a combined system and results in a lengthy (estimated 7-8 d) detention time. Goal is to reduce the initial chlorine dose to minimize DBP formation in the ground tank and provide a chlorine boost at distribution system entry point (new chlorine injection site) to maintain desired cl residuals in grid.
12. In 1.1.2, Replacing existing dosing station (Main Base System) there is request to “connect to existing building supervisory control device,”
a. what is this device? Existing device is Johnson Controls NCE. New field device to be compatible with Johnson Controls FC BUS.
b. Who makes this device, Johnson Controls or someone else? Johnson Controls
c. Is safe to assume that this device is in the same general vicinity of existing dosing station? See attachment
Contract requires to provide new field device for chlorine dosing systems monitoring and control to connect to existing building supervisory control device. Connection to building supervisory control device via FC Bus is for monitoring only.
13. Regarding existing automatic chlorine analyzer
a. What water is the analyzer sampling/testing, chlorinated raw water before the storage tank, chlorinated water at the storage tank or chlorinated water after the storage tank? Analyzer samples after storage tank at first tap used for regulatory sample point.
b. Could you please provide the make/model of the existing chlorine analyzers?
Hach CL17
14. Could you please provide any drawings, sketches, photo or PID for the existing system and or equipment, chlorine storage room, whatever is available? See attached, however conditions should be field verified and design may propose alternates.
15. What are the dimensions of existing chlorine storage rooms? See attached
