About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a NASA Ames Research Center procurement of an X-Ray Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner. The scanner is required to enable advanced 3D imaging for materials and components, with specific technical requirements including sub-1 micron spatial resolution, capability to scan samples up to 300 mm in diameter and height, and an X-ray source with continuously variable accelerating voltage up to at least 160 kV. The system must include a manipulator with at least 4 axes, fit through specified door dimensions, weigh no more than 5 metric tons, and be compliant with FDA requirements.
The procurement includes comprehensive delivery and installation specifications, with delivery required within 5 months and installation within 30 days after delivery. The system must be equipped with an acquisition workstation running Windows 11 64-bit and a reconstruction workstation with 28 high-performance computer cores, 2 NVIDIA GPU cards, 768 GB RAM, and 8 TB storage. The cost shall cover packing, shipping, rigging, full onsite installation, 3+ days of training for up to 5 people, and a one-year complete warranty. Optional items include 3D visualization software (to be listed separately) and a one-year service agreement post-warranty. The equipment will be installed in the Code TSM lab space (N242) at NASA Ames Research Center.

NASA AMES 80ARC025Q0002 – AMENDMENT 01
X-RAY COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY SCANNER
Statement of Work for X-Ray Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner
August 19, 2025
Background
NASA Ames Research Center plans to purchase an X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) system to enable advanced 3D imaging for various materials and components. This system will allow for high-resolution non-destructive evaluation, defect analysis, and dimensional metrology for broad applications within the branch. Materials of interest include low to mid density composite and thermal protection materials including carbon phenolic and oxide-based systems. Thermocouple placement and sensor placement in test models may also be interrogated to evaluate crack locations, porosity scale, distribution failure analysis and assembly verification. Typical material density will range from 0.1 g/cc to 1.6 g/cc with sensors or thermocouples having higher localized densities. The scanner will be used for batch sampling and one-of-a-kind or limited production builds. A current model “demo unit” that is used for demonstration or showcasing is acceptable if it helps reduce the cost footprint.
The CT scanner shall have the following minimum requirements:
• CT scanner shall have high-resolution detail detectability: sub 1 micron spatial resolution from a JIMA resolution test chart or similar.
• System shall fit, at a minimum, samples of diameter 300 mm by height 300 mm, inside the chamber.
• The system shall include an X-ray source. The system shall contain either one tube, with a continuously variable accelerating voltage up to at least 160 kV, or 2 tubes (one microfocus and one nanofocus), and the power of the highest powered tube should be at least 160 kV.
• The system shall contain at least one detector, preferably flat panel or CMOS. Additional detectors may be provided for better resolution.
• The system shall come equipped with a manipulator or positioning system with at least 4 axes.
• On delivery the system shall fit through doors of height 82.5” (which could be increased to 94” if necessary) and width 64”. Uncrating, if acceptable by the manufacturer, outside the space the system will operate is allowable to meet door requirement.
• The system shall not weigh more 5 metric tons.
• Current equipment in the room where the scanner will be placed use 208V, but it can be stepped up to 230V triple phased. 110V also available for auxiliary systems if required.
• If a chiller and air compressor are needed, they shall be included in the bundle.
• System shall be a self-contained, shielded unit with safety interlocks.
• The system shall be compliant with FDA requirements in 21 CFR Part 1020 for the applicable equipment.
Instrument Operation and Data Software
• The system shall allow periodic calibration and alignment by a trained NASA user as opposed to a service technician from the company.
NASA AMES 80ARC025Q0002 – AMENDMENT 01
X-RAY COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY SCANNER
• System shall be equipped with an acquisition workstation system running Windows 11
64-bit O/S.
• System shall be equipped with a user upgradable stand-alone reconstruction workstation system running Windows 11 Professional 64-bit O/S that can be easily and inexpensively upgraded by the user in the future to new hardware and/or to a new O/S. The reconstruction workstation shall be equipped with at least: 28 high-performance computer cores, 2 separate GPU-based NVIDIA graphics card, 768 GB of RAM, 8 TB of storage (including at least 2 GB on SSD), a 40 inches monitor or larger.
• Software shall include unit control, data acquisition, automation, calibration and reconstruction. Software shall be free for users, in perpetuality, for an unlimited number of users.
Place of Performance
• Installation of equipment shall be at NASA Ames Research Center in Code TSM lab space (N242).
Delivery
• Delivery of the unit is required within 5 months. Installation shall occur within 30 days after delivery. Rapid delivery is preferred.
• Cost shall include packing, shipping to destination, rigging, full onsite installation, 3 or more days of on-site training for up to 5 people, and a one-year complete warranty (warranty will start when the system is installed).
Optional items
• 3D visualization and analysis software (such as HEXAGON’s VGStudio MAX, Comet’s
Dragonfly, Thermo Fisher’s Avizo) shall NOT be included as part of a bundle but shall be listed as a separate optional line item. NASA Ames uses its own, open-source analysis code PuMA.
• A one-year service agreement past the period of warranty.
