TITLE: Cofferdam Install
QUESTION:
A:. In 3.3.2 the spec states that either a flat patch or a DC plug can be used. Is the intent to blank the entire tunnel or is there an intake pipe that could be secured using a plug?
B: In 3.3.2.2.2 it states that the cofferdam plate thickness needs to be the same thickness as the shell plate. I suspect that this was written with a vessel other than an icebreaker in mind but, please provide an acceptable plate thickness?
C: In 3.3.2.2.4 and 5 the spec calls out “shooting studs” to mount the cofferdam and then cutting them flush. I believe this is referring to the use of a Cox gun which literally shoots a tapered threaded stud through steel plate. This is an archaic tool and, while I’d love to try one, I again suspect that this was copied from an old Navy manual. Could you please submit an RFI asking if studs could be welded to the hull and then ground flush?
D: Is dewatering required? This is not covered in the specs and a typical flat-patch would not include dewatering ports & vent..
E: 3.4 states that coating touch-up should comply with SFLC Std Spec 6310. I looked at the spec and I believe that Splash Zone epoxy applied over the weld impacted areas would comply. Is splash zone epoxy acceptable?
RESPONSE:
A:. The intent of the work item is to cofferdam the bow thruster tunnel. Either a flat patch, or a DC Plug is an acceptable means of accomplishing this task.
B: Plate thickness does not need to be the same thickness as the shell plate. Paragraph
3.3.2.2.2 was modified to reflect this change.
C: “Shooting studs” does refer to welding the stud to the plate, and then ground flush after removal. Paragraph 3.3.2.2.4 modified to clarify this.
D: Dewatering will be needed for the water inside the bow thruster tunnel, ports, and vents. Paragraph 3.3.2.2.5 modified to reflect this addition.
E: SFLC Std Spec 6310 requires the coating system be an anti-abrasive coating. See Appendix A8 (U/W Body and Top Ice Breaker > 235 ft).
