6.0 FINDINGS AND ASSESSMENTS (LEAD BASED PAINT)

PAINT FILM QUALITY

Intact (surface deterioration is <2 SF or 10%)

Deteriorated (surface deterioration is >2 SF or 10%)

CATEGORIES OF PAINT DETERIORATION

Surface Coat Failure: top layer of paint is flaking, peeling, or otherwise detaching from layers below

Multi-Layer Coat Failure: several top layers are delaminating from layers below, i.e. blistering, flaking, peeling

Paint Failure: due to unsound substrate, i.e. rotted wood, rust

Paint Abrasion: paint is rubbing from mechanical or human friction

Chipped Paint: pieces of paint are loosened or broken due to impact

Note: SFLC Standard Specification 000 threshold for lead wipe sampling is 40 microgram/ft2 for berthing and food prep areas and 200 micrograms/ft2 for all other areas.

Recommendations

Throughout Area:

• Panel vibration has the potential to cause lead dust.

• Due to potential lead dust hazards, it is recommended that the area be regularly cleaned using HEPA vacuums and wet wipes to ensure levels of lead dust do not exceed the permissible exposure limit.

• If other materials are found and suspected to contain lead they should be tested before disturbed. Deteriorated areas should be abated or stabilized if found to contain lead.
