About this file
This is an Addendum to a Request for Quotation (RFQ) issued by Argonne National Laboratory's Procurement Department on May 28, 2026 for a CNC Ultrasonic Machining Center (RFQ 6-S176-Q-00284-00). The addendum provides clarification responses to 12 vendor questions regarding technical specifications, facility requirements, and delivery expectations. Key technical clarifications include: ultrasonic capability must be a core function with the cutting tool vibrating at ultrasonic frequencies; rotary ultrasonic machining is required with grinding as optional but desired; tolerances of +/-5 micrometers on all axes are required; and primary materials for machining include silicon, germanium, quartz, and silicon carbide. Facility requirements specify 480V three-phase, 50A power, 90psi compressed air, and internal coolant recirculation, with machine dimensions constrained to fit through a 9.5-foot high by 92-inch wide opening.
Delivery is targeted for installation within 5 months, with slight extensions permissible; Factory Acceptance Testing is acceptable with performance verification using a silicon blank specimen provided by ANL. The vendor must supply industry-standard ultrasonic and non-ultrasonic tool holders with a minimum of two tools for installation. Equivalent or alternate machine configurations may be proposed as options or recommendations based on vendor experience. Site visits are not required, and NRTL compliance is referenced. All offers must be received by 3:00 PM CDT on June 5, 2026, and a signed copy of this addendum must be included with proposals. Evaluation will be based on lowest price, technically acceptable criteria.

05/28/2026 This addendum is being issued to modify the subject REQUEST FOR Quotation (RFQ) 6-S176-Q-00284-00 as follows:
Response to questions as follows:
1. Can this machine have the ultrasonic capability added on it or does it have to be built in?
a. Ultrasonic capability is a core function of the machine; the cutting tool will vibrate at ultrasonic frequencies. If the vendor can provide that, it doesn't matter how it's generated.
2. Can we have a site visit?
a. ANL does not feel this is required for this equipment.
3. Please provide facility utility requirements including available voltage, phase, amperage, compressed air, etc.
a. 480v 3ph, 50A, compressed air 90psi, internal coolant recirculation system.
4. Please provide facility access information including loading dock access, rigging constraints, door clearances, and floor loading limitations. This is to ensure we can get machine inside facility.
a. Machine must be able to fit through an opening 9.5ft high and 92" wide.
5. Please identify the primary materials intended for machining.
a. Silicon, germanium, quartz, silicon carbide, etc...
6. Please provide any additional tolerances, and surface finish requirements.
a. +/-5um all axes.
7. Please clarify whether rotary ultrasonic machining, ultrasonic grinding, or both are required.
a. Rotary ultrasonic machining, grinding optional but desired.
8. Please clarify whether Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and/or Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) are required. Along with NRTL compliance.
a. FAT is acceptable.
9. Please clarify the required acceptance criteria for machine performance and accuracy verification.
a. We will provide a silicon blank to be machined with simple geometries to indicate machine finish and accuracy.
10. Please clarify whether tooling, consumables, or starter tooling packages are expected to be included in the proposal.
a. Industry standard non-ultrasonic and ultrasonic holders are acceptable. A minimum # of two tools is required for installation.
11. Please clarify whether “delivery within 5 months” refers to shipment date, onsite delivery, installation completion, or final acceptance. For manufacturers that cannot meet this timeline is an alternate timeline able to be submitted.
a. 5 months is the target date for installation at the lab, this date can be slightly extended if necessary.
12. Please advise whether equivalent or alternate machine configurations may be proposed. If so, how would you like those items shown? As options? Recommended?
a. Options or recommendations based on vendor experience.
