About this file

This memorandum provides design recommendations for the UT FLAP 73(2) La Sal Mountain Loop Road pavement project. The project involves repaving approximately 11 miles of roadway from Station 11+62 to Station 650+91. For mainline segments from Station 11+62 to 45+00, the recommendations are to pulverize the existing pavement and widen the road, add 2 inches of aggregate base before and after pulverizing, and pave with 3.5 to 4.5 inches of asphalt in two lifts. From Station 45+00 to 650+91, recommendations are either full-depth reclamation and overlay or removal and replacement of 8 inches of aggregate base before paving. The asphalt binder is specified as PG 64-28. Recommended pay items include aggregate base, full-depth reclamation, asphalt concrete, and pavement markings.

Mountain Loop Road, Pavement Report # 11-02, Pavements Section Dated April 2011.

From: Darin Lockhart, Materials Engineer, CFLHD Through Mike Voth, Supervisory Materials Engineer, CFLHD

To: Braden Peters, Project Manager, CFLHD

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this memo is to update and summarize the report used to inform pavement and material design decisions for the subject project. To this end, the following documents are attached:

UT PFH46-1(2) La Sal Mountain Loop Road, Pavement Report # 11-02, Pavements Section Dated April 2011.

SUMMARY OF RELEVANT PROJECT LIMITS

The design recommendations summary is for the UT FLAP 73(2) La Sal Mountain Loop Road project beginning at Station 11+62 to Station 650+91.

The Mile Posts (MP) listed in the UT PFH46-1(2) La Sal Mountain Loop Road, Pavement Report # 11-02, Pavements Section Dated April 2011, are approximate locations. Mile Post 2.0 begins at the intersection with Kens Lake Road and proceeds south toward higher mile posts.

The boring locations and boring logs within the limits of the UT FLAP 73(2) La Sal Mountain Loop Road project are in the range of MP 2.25 to MP 12, shown in Appendix A Field Investigation and Testing Summaries of the Pavement Report #11-02.

The relevant reports of soil or aggregate tests are for Hole Numbers B8-B40, shown in Appendix B Laboratory Test Results, Page 1 of 8 and 2 of 8.

DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS – UT FLAP 73(2) La Sal Mountain Loop Road

The recommendations for the mainline were based on the pavement design report.

Pavement Structural Section Layer Thickness

Asphalt Concrete Pavement 4.5 inches (two lifts) Aggregate Base 2 inches Full-depth Reclamation, Method 2, 8-Inch Depth 8 inches

Construct embankment, place and compact a minimum of 8-inches of aggregate base in widened areas. Before pulverizing add 2 inches of aggregate base. Pulverize the existing paved width including widening and added aggregate base. Blend aggregate base and pulverized material together before spreading. Prepare the surface and apply prime coat on top of aggregate base.

Apply tack coat between lifts. Prepare the surface and apply fog seal across entire surface following the construction of the above structural section.
