About this file

This document provides supplemental information for a federal solicitation to replace salt water flushing piping aboard the T.S. Kennedy. The contractor will replace existing steel piping from the sanitary water pump discharge valves to frame 141 with 88.9mm Viega SeaPress fittings and CuNi tubing. This includes replacing valves and adapting branch lines and existing piping. The replacement work spans the pump room, lower tween deck, upper tween deck and engineer's storeroom. Photographs show specific piping runs and points of connection to the existing 88.9mm CuNi piping previously installed. The related solicitation is for drydocking repairs and ABS survey of the T.S. Kennedy, with a revised statement of work and drawings. A second site visit will be held on January 7, 2020, with any questions due by January 10, 2020. The solicitation package will be posted on or about December 6, 2020. Information is provided on the DOT Short-Term Lending Program to finance transportation contracts for minority, women-owned and disadvantaged businesses.

ITEM 414- SUPLIMENTAL INFORMATION - REPLACE SALT WATER FLUSHING PIPING LISTED ON THE ATTACHED REFRENCES WITH CuNi The contractor will be required to replace all existing steel piping with 88.9mm Viega SeaPress ® fittings and CuNi tubing. The scope of work starts at the sanitary water pump discharge valves and continues to the previous work at frame 141 on Upper Tween Deck. All replacements will be of 88.9mm Viega SeaPress ® fittings and associated reducers and tee’s to adapt to the work that is not part of this item (AFT of frame 141 was done in an earlier availability).

The contractor will be required to make a number of valve replacements and adaptations to the existing piping that is will not be replaced as part of this requirement. Generally, the requirement is to replace the main discharge line heading aft to the previous repair. All branch lines will be replaced up to and including the first valve on any branch line. Because of the change in pipe size the contractor will replace the valves and be required to adapt the existing line to the new valve. The description is a follows:

AMR: the pump discharge valves are flanged 2” bronze valves that will need to be adapted with appropriate reducing Viega SeaPress ® fittings, there is an additional pipe that provided sanitary water to the hydro-pneumatic tank. (see photo) additional there is a fire station and the outlet of the backflow preventer tee’d off included in this work scope.

There is and additional line tee’d off heading aft that will need a contractor installed valve (the discharge side of the valve will remain steel piping. An existing flanged joint at the overhead that will need to be renewed with Viega SeaPress ® fittings.

This is a photo looking up from the AMR, the flange and the 90-deg elbow up is to the LTD.

Lower Tween deck: The piping penetrates the deck from below at approximately frame 100.5 and continues up (there is 1” offset heading aft and a flanged joint in the vertical run between the LTD and UTD. Approximately 6” from the underside of the UDT are 2 branch connections that will need to be dealt with, including installation of new bronze valves and appropriate Viega SeaPress ® fittings to adapt to the branch connections (the steel pipe will remain after the valve, the contractor will be required to make the connections and adaptations required to connect the piping to the new valves.

Upper Tween Deck: the piping will penetrate the UTD at approximately frame 101, there is an offset to port in the vertical run of pipe, the vertical run also contains a flanged joint. The pipe then turns 90 deg and heads aft the is a tee and isolation valve at approximately frame 103. The contractor will be responsible for replacing this valve and adapting the existing pipe to the new valve.

The pipe continues aft to a vertical offset (45 deg fittings and a rise of approximately 18”) at approximately frame 109 there is an additional stub out inboard, the contractor will be responsible for renewing the up to and including the valve and adapting the piping on the outlet side of the valve to match the new valve. The piping continues aft to an isolation valve (approximately frame 111), the contractor will be required to replace the isolation valve with a new valve sized to mate with the new 88.9mm CuNi tubing. The piping continues aft turning inboard, then aft, then outboard, then aft again, where it penetrates the watertight bulkhead at frame 119 (just outboard of the sliding watertight door.

This is a photo of the pipe as it drops from the overhead to penetrate the watertight bulkhead at frame 119

The piping continues aft thru the engineer’s storeroom. The pipe has 2 offsets in the engineer’s storeroom, one down heading aft then back up before the piping turns inboard at approximately frame 133. The pipe then turns aft again, where it makes an inboard jog (45-degree offset) and then a vertical offset going up to the overhead. At approximately frame 137 the piping turns inboard at 90 deg. There is a flanged spool piece just before the pipe turns aft again. Just after the turn aft the pipe makes a vertical offset the penetrates the bulkhead at frame 140, the contractor will make up the new piping with the piping at approximately frame 141 that was previously replaces with 88.9mm9mm Viega SeaPress ® fittings and CuNi tubing.

This is a photo of the transition to the existing 88.9mm CuNi piping previously replaced.
