1. Introduction Safety Summary
Caution – Potentially Fatal!
If the following release hook operating instructions are not correctly observed, or the system is operated by a person not familiar with the system, there is a danger of unintentional release, and the boat could drop from the complete lifting height.
As a result, injury or death of persons on board could occur or the boat could be rendered unusable.
Do not enter or lower the lifeboat before checking the correct position of the release hooks, release bolts and the release handle!
Do not perform any maintenance to the release gear whilst the hooks are under load!
Do not weld in the davit area when the boat is hanging in the davits (refer to chapter 9).
Never operate the release handle with excessive force!
Never override the hydrostatic interlock unless absolutely necessary!
Always ensure that the boat is in the water before release!
Note: All described release gear equipment and corresponding reference numbers (e.g. “release handle (2)”) refer to the “Scheme of release gear” in chapter 2 resp. to drawings and part list in the SEPARATE Service-engineer manual (ONLY for certified hook service engineers).
Familiarisation with this manual is an integral part of this training. It is valid for the following release hooks:
Duplex 2.5 t Duplex 5.0 t Duplex 6.6 t Duplex 10.0 t Duplex 17.0 t

This manual is valid for the above mentioned release hook systems delivered since 1999. For older systems it may be used analogously. Several components however will appear different to the attached equipment, or may not be installed at all. Due to the technical nature and constant further development, notable differences from the actual installations are possible.
Document 00.0000-361.00.00.4 Art. No. 676511 Mod. 4 Orr/Rei/AH 28.04.06 4
2. Brief description
The release hooks of sizes 2.5t, 5.0t and 6.6t are constructed in a similar manner.
The 10t and 17t hooks are also respectively similar, however, are different from the smaller hooks up to 6.6t. The following drawings and descriptions are based on the 6.6t and the 10t hook. Information must be extrapolated for use with the other hooks.
Note: Some Rescue boats are equipped with ONE hook. The chapters relating to simultaneous release do not refer to these boats.
Note: In some cases the total payload is smaller in comparison to the maximum possible load. The only valid SWL is the SWL stamped into the hook.
The release hooks installed on lifeboats will be released simultaneously with Hook control cables (13/14) triggered through the release handle (2) of the central release unit (21). The release handle (2) is secured by a hydrostatic interlock (3), which prevents release of the boat when not waterborne. This safety device can be overridden in case of failure during an emergency.
As soon as the boat is waterborne the hydrostatic interlock (3) will open and the release handle (2) is then unsecured. The indicator (10) for the hydrostatic interlock (3) will change from RED to GREEN. After removal of the safety pin (1), the release handle (2) can be operated. The release hooks will be released even under full load.
Recovery of the boat occurs with a closed and locked hook. The hook will have closed itself under its own weight but proper positioning must be visually verified as described in Chp 3.2. The release handle (2) must be moved back into closed position and secured with the safety pin (1) for locking. A safety device (19) inside the hook ensures that the release handle (2) can only be moved back into its closed position when the hooks are fully closed.
Following this, the davit’s long eye (7) will be hung into the hook. A stop pawl
(8) prevents the eye from dropping out.
For maintenance work the boat can be suspended from the davit with a hanging strop attached to the hanging-off-eyes at the release hook. The release hooks are then free to move and can be tended to.
Components of the hook case are made of stainless steel. The hook itself is made of high strength casted bronze. Fulcrum pins and other components are made of other high strength materials. As a precaution no parts of the hook may be replaced by spare parts, which are not delivered by Fr. Fassmer GmbH & Co. KG.

3. Operation
Caution – Potentially Fatal!
Operation by Coxswain only:
Faulty operation will drop the boat! Operation of release system should only be carried out by the coxswain. Do not enter, lower or hoist the boat before the cor-rect positioning of the hook, release bolt and release handle are checked.
3.1 Operation and Releasing
3.1.1 Normal release
• Turn the safety pin (1) and pull it out.
• If the red safety indication (10) has turned to green the boat is waterborne and hydrostatic interlock has unlocked the release handle (2).
• Operate the release handle (2) swiftly. This unlocks the hooks, but they will open only under load.
Caution:
Never operate the release handle with excessive force. Damage to the release sys-tem could occur.
3.1.2 Emergency release (=> detailed photos on next page)
Caution:
This operation drops the lifeboat and may kill you or cause serious injury!
When using the emergency release it is possible to set the hooks free under load when hanging in the davits or whilst lowering. Use the release handle only when you are sure that the boat is waterborne!(see note) red green red
If the hydrostatic interlock (3) does not unlock the release handle (2) the hooks can alternatively be unlocked for emergency use in the following way:
• Ensure that the boat is waterborne (see note).
• Remove safety glass (4) using the crowbar (11).
Note: crowbar is a red stanchion attached with a chain close to the release box (26).
• Open the shackle bolt (5).
• Operate the release handle (2) swiftly. This unlocks the hooks simultaneously, and if they are under load they will drop the boat suddenly!
Note: If for any reason it is NOT possible to lower the boat into the water, the helmsman might decide based on his expertise to operate the release as close to the water as possible. This should only be done as a last resort after checking all equipment and finding a mechanical problem or issue on with the ship. Take into account that already drops from low heights (up to 1 m) might cause injuries or death. Drops from more than 3 m will already seriously damage the lifeboat!

3.2 Preparation for Recovery
Incomplete resetting of the release hooks can cause the lifeboat to drop and death to occupants!
In case of problems refer to our trouble shooting section (chapter 7) or call for service.
Caution:
Never operate release handle with excessive force! Handle is blocked by an internal safety device (21) if the hook is not in the recovery position.
Hook up to 6.6t:
• Check if hook (6) is closed: arrow “A” to be at the notch on the side plate.
• Return the release handle (2) to the closed position.
• Check the position of the release bolt (9). The mark must be in line with the green “OK” arrow.
• Secure release handle (2) with the safety pin (1).
• The shackle bolt (5) must be closed.
Warning:
If the hook position “A”, or the release bolts (9) are not correctly aligned, or if the hooks or release handles (2) can not easily be moved DO NOT USE THE HOOKS for hoisting!

Hook 10t and 17t:
• Check each hook’s position: No part of the hook should be seen through the control hole “A”!
• Return the release handle (2) to the closed position.
• Check the position of the release bolt (9). The mark must be in line with the green “OK” arrow.
• Secure the release handle (2) with the safety pin (1).
• The shackle bolt (5) must be closed.

Replacing the davit long link and hauling up
Push the davit long link (7) into the release hook (6). The stop pawl (8) will open during this procedure.
Replacing the davit long links into the release hooks is dangerous, particularly in rough seas. Protect head and hands, and handle with the utmost care.
Lift the boat slowly until it is just out of the water.
Watch both release hooks and davit long links during this procedure. Stop imme-diately if the davit long links have turned or canted, or if they are not straight in the aft region of the release hook.
Document 00.0000-361.00.00.4 Art. No. 676511 Mod. 4 Orr/Rei/AH 28.04.06 11
Due to slack and movement in the davit long links, the stop pawl may be opened in such a way, that the davit long links can shift around in, or, fall completely out of, the hook.
Hoisting the lifeboat in this condition will damage the hook and drops the lifeboat and may kill you or cause serious injury.
With the lifeboat standing just out of the water check once more the items men-tioned under “recovery”.
Further, check the correct positioning of the davit long links (7), the whole davit hoisting device and the release hook´s stop pawl (8).
If everything is correct and the hydrostatic interlock (3) is closed (indicator shows “RED”) the boat can be hauled up.
All persons in the boat should be seated and seat belts (if mounted) fastened for the duration of the hoisting.
3.3 “Harbour safety pin”
Note:
Hooks of type 10t and 17t can be additionally secured against misuse in harbours during release gear maintenance periods with an optional “Harbour safety pin” (Fassmer art. no. 681496) inserted and secured in the control hole of the hook casing.
Danger:
Ensure always to remove this pin immediately after end of work or the release hooks are blocked!
NEVER use whilst sailing the ship!
3.4 Maintenance/hanging off pendant attachment points
There are maintenance/hanging off pendant attachment points on the hooks.
These are to be used for transportation and maintenance purposes or for re-hanging the boat when using a hanging off pendant in rough sea. When the eyes are used for service and maintenance, the components of the hook can be checked and their functions can be tested, without removing boat from davits.
Warning:
Take care in heeding the maximum load capacity of the lifting eyes which are shown on the following pages!

Defects have to be solved and defective parts to be replaced. If this is not possible, such defects have to be listed at the end of this list for quickest possible settlement.
Caution: During the following overhaul the boat should not be hanging in the davits, it should be stowed ashore or on the ship’s deck!
It is forbidden to carry out any work on the release system while the release hooks are under load. The hooks may release under load, dropping the boat!
It is recommended that this overhaul is carried out during the ship’s stay in the dry dock for class renewal.
Only if this is not possible:
• Secure boat with Maintenance/hanging off pendant attachment points to davit acc. to davit instructions.
• Inform and on duty officer when starting and finishing work on the release system
Note: The following chapter is a checklist and NO work instruction! A separate detailed instructions is in the hand of Fassmer-certified service engineers.
5.2.1 Dismantling of hook release units:
Remove fulcrum pin (16), release bolt (9) and movable hook parts from the casing (ch. 7).
Clean all removed parts carefully with gas oil and inspect them for visible damage and corrosion. Grease all moving parts with a thin coating of seawater resistant grease (acc. to 5.1.9) Caution: Before dismantling be sure that the turning bolt’s position is correctly marked on the bolt and hook.

5.2.5 Re-assemble the hooks and adjust release gear system ok not ok
5.2.6 AFTER finishing overhaul work:
Weekly and 3-monthly inspections and routine maintenance acc.
4.1 and 4.2 and Annual Thorough Examination acc. 5.1 including release tests to be executed (complete separate check lists) ok not ok
5.2.7 Overload release test
After re-assembly the release system needs to be “…operationally tested under a load of 1.1 times the total mass of the lifeboat when loaded with its full complement of persons and equipment…” (SOLAS, ch. III, reg. 20.11.2.3), together with complete inspection and maintenance according ch. 4.2. This release test should be carried out three times. If new parts were installed the simultaneous release could have changed for these tests. If this is the case adjustment in preparation for, and the test itself need to be repeated.
If this test does not satisfy the requirements, refer to ch. 7 “Trouble shooting” and correct the fault.
Warning: During the release test only one person is permitted onboard and they must be firmly secured!

Important notes:
It is strongly recommended to execute the “1.1 times” overload test of boat with the full complement of persons and equipment, with a hydraulic test device onboard, and NOT to load the boat with weights.
Only if such a device is not available may the test be carried out as follows:
The boat should be hanging from the cranes just clear of the water or a maximum of 10mm above ground. Place sufficient foam or other material under the keel ensuring that the boat will not be damaged.
Mobile hydraulic test device for release hooks
The five-yearly dynamic overload winch brake test should be executed with a PROOF LOAD and NOT with the boat (revised SOLAS III/Reg. 20.11.1.3 in Res. MSC.152(78)) Reason: the forces occurring during such test can not be predicted but can be between 2 and 3 times the weight of the fully loaded boat. This might cause undetectable damages in lifeboat GRP structures which might lead to later failure when in use with persons.
Also davit brake failure during this test will lead to serious damages to the boat.
NO person shall be in the boat during a dynamic winch brake test. A system failure can drop the boat and KILL YOU or cause serious injuries!
5.2.8 On completion of the overhaul and test (only to done by Fassmer-authorised engineers) the service needs to be marked with a label on the safety glass (4) of the locking box (3). Here you will also mark the due-date for the next service.

MANIPULATIONS OF THE RELEASE GEAR SYSTEM BY UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS, VOIDS EVERY
GUARANTEE AND RESPONSIBILITY OF FR. FASSMER GMBH & CO. KG!
ONLY ORIGINAL FASSMER SPARE PARTS ARE ALLOWED TO BE INSTALLED. Order spare parts according to the drawing and the part list in ch. 10 and state further in your inquiry:
• SWL of your release hook (stamped into the movable hook part)
• Fassmer serial no. of the lifeboat or
• Shipyard, hull-no. and build year of the mother ship
9. Onboard installation
On delivery the release system is ready for use. All tests required by SOLAS/IMO 83 have been carried out.
Caution: On delivery the release system is protected with a special marked cable tie, and warning sign at the safety pin.
To avoid accidents through incorrect operation during yard time, do not remove this safety device before the mother ship is put into service.
Bring the boat under the davit/crane and attach it according to the davit instructions or with use of a shore crane:
For the first lift of the boat by shore crane the transportation eyes of the hook have to be used. Take care not to exceed the SWL of the transportation eyes (see “hanging off” in ch. 3.2).
Caution: When lifting with the transportation eyes, be sure that the boat is empty, with no persons onboard.
max. 30°
Danger of damage When using a crane, attach to the transportation eyes of the hooks.
Spreading angle of heaving wires max. 30°!
Danger of damage Do not weld in the area of davits when boats are hanging!
If an earth of the welder is incorrectly positioned, current will flow through the hook control cables (13/14). This could in turn melt the plastic cover of the wire, rendering them unworkable.
Check and service after installation and test Load on hoisting fittings, and testing after installation, can lead to hook components bedding down or warping slightly.
Through this process screwed connections may become loose or sealing seams, in the area of the release hooks, may crack. Therefore, all screwed connections and elastic sealing seams have to be checked, tightened and resealed if necessary, after every installation or test, and once more, around 14 days later.
This is part of the customer’s commissioning and can not be claimed on the guarantee!
