PART 1 DESCRIPTION
1.1 DESCRIPTION
The lifeboats are stored on the boat davits on both sides of the ship. In case of emergency, the crew can board the lifeboat and escaped with the lifeboat directly from its stowage position.
The launching appliance consists of a boat davit (davit arm, frame, platform, falls, suspension block, and gripes/lashing device) and a boat winch (reduction gears, hand brake and centrifugal brake).Swinging out and lowering of the lifeboat can be controlled both from the inside of the lifeboat and at the ship’s deck. The lowering speed of the lifeboat can be controlled by operating the remote control wire inside the lifeboat or by operating the remote control lever on the ship’s deck. Moreover, it is possible to suspend the lowering operation of the lifeboat at any height. Recovery of the lifeboat is performed by operating the boat winch with the push-button switch box. When the davit arm reaches a prescribed position, the boat winch is automatically stopped by the limit switch. After the activation of the limit switch, the boat winch is operated manually to wind upthe lifeboat to its stowage position. The boat winch is provided with a safety device to prevent there verse operation of the manual handle.
The lifeboat is equipped with on-load/off-load release gear which complies with the requirements of the IMO Life-Saving Appliance (LSA) Code. To avoid possible injury or death, read this manual carefully before using the boat davit, the boat winch, and the on-load/off-load release gear.
The pivot davit system allows:
- Launching of the boat from stowed position up to the water level.
Boat with full complement of persons.
- Hoisting of the boat including operation crew of 3 persons (lifeboat modus)
- Launching/hoisting of the boat including crew of 6 persons (life/rescue boat modus)
Davit system is designed in that way to allow launching of the boat in following
Ship conditions:
List ± 20° (30° for tankers)
Trim ± 10°
Lowering hoisting speeds are determinate as follows:
Gravity lowering speed according to SOLAS formula
V=0,4+(0,02xH) m/s, max. 1,0 m/s V= gravity lowering speed (m/s)
H= height from davit head to the waterline at the lightest seagoing condition (m)

Finally release the painter to get out of the vessel.
For operation follow the lifeboat operation manual !
Ensure boat is level before hand winching into fully stowed position, i.e. the craft coming evenly up against the boat chocks.
Misalignment CANNOT be corrected by continuing to crank the winch. This is dangerous as it overloads the boat by over-straining the fall wires, then one end of the boat contacts before the other.
Misalignment should be corrected by using the falls adjustment turnbuckles in the prescribed manner before final stowage is commenced.
2.4.2 RECOVERY OPERATION (HOIST SURVIVAL CRAFT)
2.4.2.1 Generally
2.4.2.2 Turn on the main switch of the starter panel.

After that, the recovery work is performed by manual handle. The manual handle is operated in accordance with the instruction of two operators on the stage.
Either of the two operators give a signal as the davit armes comes into contact with upper stopper of frame and winding operation stops the manual handle.
The over-winding by manual handle will cause davit failure or serious trouble because overload is applied to the mechanism of boat fall & davit
The gap of the boat fall in the fore & aft is automatically adjusted.
Remove the manual handle from the boat winch. 8. Switch off electrical supply to motor
2.4.2.6 Connect up boat and arm gripes then fully tighten on turnbuckles

LUBRICATION
Gravity davits are mechanical devices. Like other machines if they are to retain their efficiency they must be regularly lubricated and inspected. All bearings/sheaves on the davit are maintenance free. The winch gear case oil level should be frequently checked.
For greasing of winch refer to Winch maintenance .
Other points calling for special attention are mentioned later.
Suitable grades of recommended lubricants are listed later.
PAINTING
Careless painting is the most frequent source of trouble with gravity davits.
WHEN PAINTING IT IS ESSENTIAL TO ENSURE THAT NO PAINT IS
APPLIED TO LUBRICATING POINTS, OR TO BEARINGS OR ANY MOVING
PARTS IN SUCH A WAY AS TO IMPEDE THEIR FREE MOVEMENT.
3.2.2 FALLS & WIRES
1. Falls are reeved as shown on Drawing Wiring Diagram. Turnbuckles are provided for levelling of falls should they stretch unevenly or coil incorrectly.
2. Falls and wires must be inspected periodically to check condition. They will give longer service if changed end to end before showing signs of wear.
3. Rope lubricant should be applied regularly to ropes in quantities sufficient to produce a thin, even adherent coating, which will remain flexible and fully protective over the full range of temperatures likely to be encountered in service.
See Part 7 for lubricant details.
4. Falls should be cleaned of foreign matter and corrosion using a
‘trichloroethylene’ based solvent and a cleaning swab. Do not allow the falls to be soaked in the solvent as this may damage the fibre core of the rope. Allow to dry thoroughly before applying rope lubricant.
5. Falls must be neatly coiled on the winch barrel. Turns must not override one another, otherwise the boat will come home unevenly.
6. When renewing falls the correct size, construction, breaking strain and length should be ascertained.
Wire ropes should be changed in the following cases:
.1 break of elemental wire was observed;
.2 7% reduction of nominal diameter was observed;
.3 kink or looseness of ply was observed; or
.4 erosion / corrosion was observed.
3.2.3 WINCH MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
See separately winch operation & maintenance manual
PART 4 SERVICE ACTIVITIES
4.1. ANNUAL (ONE YEAR SERVICE) AND FIVE YEAR SERVICE
In this chapter the required maintenance (service) for one year and five year will be described.
It is to be executed by the FASSMER authorised service personal.
Procedure is in accordance with IMO MSC/Circ.
For Fassmer pivot davit system it is essential to have any repair performed by skilled labour only.
No Name spare parts will be dangerous also in that way that a proper function of the davit my not be ensured.
4.2. ONE YEAR SERVICE
1. Davit structure in particular with regard to corrosion and deformations.
2. Wire rope and wire rope sheaves should be checked against possible damages such as kinks and corrosion.
Wire rope sheaves must be turning freely and the grooves should seat the rope properly.
If any damage will be finding on wire ropes sheaves the damaged sheaves should be exchange.
Following this requirement also should be checked remote control wire rope including remote control wire rope sheaves. In fact that remote control wire rope sheaves are from plastic material should be checked against damages. If any sheave will be damaged should be exchange against new one. Check connection of remote control wire and PA wire.
3. Lubrication of wire rope, wire ropes sheaves and moving davit parts.
The davit has been provided with maintenance free, pre-lubricated bushes, running on stainless steel shafts. Special maintenance of these turning parts is not necessary.
Wire rope required re-lubrication and if necessary prior cleaning. Re-lubrication should employ grease that is compatible with the manufacturer’s lubricant.
The coating must be such as not to impair the visual inspection of the wire rope surface.
Check that swivel eye on lower block has been greased. If necessary greased the same.
Remote control wire rope is from stainless steel and should not be lubricated.
4. Oil in winches gear boxes should be changed.
Before filling the gearbox with new oil , it should be thoroughly cleaned with scouring oil.
Quantity of oil is mentioned in each Winch Instruction Manual available on board.
5. Open and inspect brake mechanism of the winch. In case that is necessary replace brake pads.
6. Functioning of limit switches should be checked.
7. Function of remote control should be checked.
NOTE:
Pos. 6 and 7 are checked during functional test of complete davit system.
8. Dynamic winch brake test
Annual operational testing should be done by lowering the empty boat.
When the boat has reached its maximum lowering speed and before the boat enters the water, the brake should be abruptly applied.
Please note that this annual test is performed with empty boat (boat with equipment but without load of boat persons).
4.3. FIVE YEAR SERVICE
Only FASSMER authorized personal are legitimate for the 5 year service.
For Service and spare parts please contact the Fassmer Service Office, Service Hotline

PART 6 FAULT FINDING
LOGICAL TRACING OF FAULTS
6.1 BOAT DOES NOT LOWER WHEN BRAKE LEVER IS LIFTED
1. Check that arm locking bars are not in place and preventing boat lowering.
2. If winch is still reluctant to run out, fit locking bars and check free running of winch in lowering direction. Normally, a pull of approximately 100 kgs is sufficient when applied to the falls with brake lever lifted.
3. If winch is free running, davit must be stuck fast with paint on pivot or sheave pins and sheave housings.
These must be free of paint and greased.
4. If davits have sustained any damage by weather, cargo handling etc., misalignment of various points may be the cause. In this case, davit manufacturer should be contacted.
6.2 BOAT LOWERS TOO QUICKLY
1. Dismantle centrifugal brake housing and check that there is no grease or oil on winch brake shoes.
Clean if necessary or renew. (See Maintenance Section for details).
2. Check that brake is not worn down to shoe material. Renew if necessary.
6.3 BOAT LOWERS TOO SLOWLY
1. Check free running sheaves and winch.
6.4 BRAKE OR CLUTCH FAILS TO HOLD BOAT
To check clutch: see winch manual
6.5 WINCH NOT FREE RUNNING
1. Check that oil in gear case is of correct viscosity and level.
2. Check gear teeth for breakages and gear case for foreign matter.
3. Check bearings for collapse and bearings and shafts for rust and corrosion.
(This should not occur with correct periodic maintenance).
6.6 WINCH WILL NOT HOIST BOAT
1. Check that there is an electrical supply to the motor.
2. Check that the crank handle has not been left in position on the winch.
NOTE: The crank handle protection switch lever when moved out of way for crank handle insertion, will ‘CUT OFF’ supply to motor.
3. Check that the hoist limit switches on winch axle are not jammed in the ‘OFF’ position and are free to operate.
4. Check that the brake lever is in the ‘FULLY ON’ position. If it is not ‘FULLY
ON’ it will cause the brake to slip. If it is ‘FULLY ON’ and the electrical supply is available to motor, then the brake is contaminated with oil or grease and is slipping. Renew the brake lining.

1.3 TESTING ON BOARD
Testing has to be carried out in presence of attending Surveyors, who will probably also wish to witness other commissioning / testing activities.
All davits and winches are already tested at works but onboard test must be carried out after installation.
Required is lowering test of fully loaded boat weight plus 10% overload.
On board test is specified by IMO Resolution MSC.81(70) Part 2 Section 6.
After installation of davits and boat the System has to be approved by a surveyor from the appropriate authority.
All davits and winches are already tested at works but onboard test must be carried out after installation.
LSA require lowering test of fully laden boat weight plus 10% overload.
TEST LOADS
Surveyors will state exact loads they require but, in order to have sandbags etc.
available, we give the following information:
Boat CLR-T 6,4
Fully Loaded weight (53Persons) xxx kg
Plus 10% xxx kg xxx kg
Less boat weight xxx kg xxx kg
Therefore xxxx kg of sandbag/water bag weight is required for lowering test
Check that test weights are properly fastened in the boat.
It is recommended the use of solid ballast.
TEST
Tests should be made to ensure that all survival craft can be re-stowed from the embarkation position safely and with facility when loaded with the required equipment and that when so loaded the craft can, when released, be lowered by gravity into the water against the frictional resistance of the winch, falls, blocks and other associated gear.
Each set of davits or launching appliance and any associated winches and their brakes should be capable of lowering the survival craft from the embarkation deck into the water loaded with the required equipment and a distributed weight equal to the full number of persons which it is deemed fit to accommodate plus 10 per cent of the working load. Winch brakes exposed to the weather shall be capable of withstanding the foregoing test with the braking surface wetted. For the purpose of the tests the weight of a person should be taken to be 75 kg (165 pounds).”
1.4 COMMISSIONING/TESTING
01. Establish that Pre-Commissioning Checks have been completed satisfactorily.
02. Load weights into survival craft and distribute them evenly in craft.
03. Ensure that hanging off pendants are not attached to secondary lift points on hooks.
04. Rotate brake lever allowing survival craft to lower at a speed automatically controlled by centrifugal brakes.
05. When requested/instructed by surveyor, operator releases brake lever and allows action of falling brake weight to bring winch to a halt.
06. Repeat as instructed by surveyor.
07. Hoist to embarkation level. Be prepared to stop winch on emergency stop button if limit switches do not cut out.
08. Lower survival craft again. This time for surveyor to check lowering speed.
09. Hoist to deck level and remove test weights.
10. Check hoist limit switches cut off approximately 150mm from stowed position by carefully hoisting boat towards stowed position. Be prepared to stop winch on emergency stop button if limit switches do not cut out.
11. Lower survival craft to say 1 metre below stowed position and hoist a little to prove all limit switches are closed.
12.With crank handle inserted and personnel well clear of it, press hoist push button to check protection switch has cut off power supply to winch.
14. Remove crank handle and carefully hoist craft to embarkation level.
15. Check operation of remote control from within craft. Crew member pulls down on remote control wire in craft, which will rotate brake lever and allow craft to lower.
Maintaining pull on wire will allow craft to lower until pull is released. Craft will come to stop as brake level drops to put holding brake on.
To continue lowering, remote control wire is pulled again.
16. Hoist craft back up to hoist limit switch cut off position
Complete stowage of craft by operating winch crank handle
18. Remove crank handle and stow it on winch.. Switch off electric supply.
1.5. COMMISSIONING/TESTING CHECK LIST

CLAMPING BRACKET ON FREE ROPE END
LOOSE END BOUNDING
TIGHTENING TORQUE ∅14mm=36 Nm
∅16mm=54 Nm
11. Check function of control wire lowering. A steady pull on the end of the control wire will initially pull brake lever round and release holding clutch on winch. Maintaining a pull will lower the boat and releasing pull will stop winch as weighted brake lever returns brake to holding position.
12. Connect hanging-off pendants. These are used only when work is being carried out on the boat hooks. When working on the hooks the pendants should be attached to the eye on outside of suspension hooks on boat. The boat weight is then transferred to the pendants by tightening the turnbuckles to take weight off wire ropes to winch. After completion of work, remove pendants from suspension lugs and hang on stowage bars on arm.
13. Check all oil levels and grease all ropes.
