About this file
This is a Material Ordering Data sheet for high-carbon cast-steel grit specification SAE J1993. The document establishes detailed requirements for the procurement of 400 drums of G50 grade grit per SAE J444 Cast Shot and Grit Size Specifications (June 2023 revision). The grit must meet a hardness range of 54 to 61 HRC (HCS G(1)L classification) and durability requirements per SSPC AB3 SEC 5.2.4. All material must be newly manufactured; recycled grit is not acceptable. Packaging requirements mandate that steel drums be poly-lined and sealed both inside and outside, with pallets requiring poly coverage. All unit, intermediate, and shipping containers must be marked in accordance with MIL-STD-129, with reference to DLA Procurement Note C20 for further marking instructions.
The document specifies a non-standard sampling methodology that prohibits ASTM B215 Method B, Keystone Samplers, and sample splitters. Instead, representative samples must be drawn from drums according to a defined schedule ranging from 2 samples for 2-15 drums up to 80 samples for 3,201-10,000 drums. Hardness testing requires a minimum of ten particles per sample with three hardness readings per particle, with ninety percent of readings required to fall within the specified range per SAE J1993 paragraph 10.4 and ASTM E 384. Samples must also be tested for conformance to other chemical and physical properties defined in SAE J1993. A critical rejection provision stipulates that if one sample fails, the entire order shall fail and all batches delivered as part of that order shall be rejected, with no requirement for sampling and testing of each batch delivered. For PSNS (Preferred Source of NSN) orders with IAC codes [01] and [06], a 100 percent sample rate applies.
