About this file

This is a Material Ordering Data sheet for high-carbon cast-steel grit conforming to SAE J1993 specification. The contracting activity seeks 400 drums (DR) of G50-grade grit per SAE J444, with a hardness range of 54 to 61 HRC (Rockwell C scale). The material must be newly manufactured only; recycled grit is not acceptable. Durability must conform to SSPC AB3 Section 5.2.4. All steel drums require interior and exterior poly-lining and sealing, and pallets must be poly-covered. All unit, intermediate, and shipping containers must be marked in accordance with MIL-STD-129, with reference to DLA Procurement Note C20 for detailed marking instructions.

Sampling and testing requirements are stringent and vary by lot size, ranging from 2 samples for 2-15 drums to 80 samples for 3,201-10,000 drums. ASTM B215 Method B, Keystone samplers, and sample splitters are prohibited; representative samples must be drawn directly from drums. Hardness testing requires a minimum of ten particles per sample with three hardness readings per particle per SAE J1993 paragraph 10.4 and ASTM E 384, with 90 percent of readings required to fall within specification. Samples must also be tested for conformance to other chemical and physical properties defined in SAE J1993. A single sample failure results in rejection of the entire order and all batches delivered under that order; batch-by-batch sampling is not required. For PSN supply sources only with IAC codes [01] and [06], a 100 percent sample rate applies. The document was prepared by Material and Technical Support, Code 244.4, and all referenced specifications must be to the latest revision at time of award.
