About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) defining requirements for geophysical logging services at the Rock Valley Direct Comparison (RV/DC) Testbed site at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). The work involves collecting geophysical logs from a core boring hole that will be drilled to approximately 7,000 feet depth, with logging to be performed in multiple stages as drilling progresses.

The subcontractor must provide specialized logging tools and experienced personnel to collect various types of geophysical data including multi-arm caliper, spectral gamma ray, spontaneous potential, density, neutron porosity, resistivity, sonic, optical televiewer, formation microimager, acoustic borehole imager, temperature, and borehole deviation measurements. Four separate logging callouts are anticipated, with increasingly challenging conditions: the first section from 0-1,400 feet at ambient temperature, progressing to 5,000-7,000 feet with temperatures potentially exceeding 85°C and pressures up to 2,600 psi. The subcontractor must provide redundant equipment, arrive within 24 hours of callout, deliver draft logs within 24 hours of data collection and final logs within 72 hours. No security clearance is required but logging engineers and operators cannot be foreign nationals. Work will be performed at NNSS Area 27, approximately 14 miles northwest of Mercury, NV.

B-1 SCOPE/BACKGROUND

1. Scope: This Statement of Work (SOW) defines the requirements to conduct geophysical logging services for the core boring to be drilled at the Rock Valley Direct Comparison (RV/DC) Testbed site. The core boring is hereinafter referred to as the Corehole (CH) in this document.

2. Project Background: The work consists of collecting geophysical logs to support the Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Program’s RV/DC project at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). A small diameter CH will be drilled to a total depth (TD) of approximately 7,000 ft and geophysical logs shall be collected from surface to TD when conditions allow. The first 2,900 ft are anticipated to be composed of alluvium, tertiary clastic sediments, and volcanics. Paleozoic sediments (primarily dolomite and limestone) are anticipated below that depth to TD (Table 1). The water table is expected at approximately 1,400 ft below ground surface (bgs). Corehole drilling will start at the surface with a PQ™ sized (4.83” OD) bit to a depth of ~4000 feet bgs.

The CH diameter will be reduced to the next smaller standard size of HQ™ (3.77” OD) and will be drilled at this diameter to TD. Temperatures in the subsurface are anticipated to reach over 85 degrees Celsius (°C) at TD but could be higher. Pressure gradients are anticipated to be approximately 0.465 psi/ft. Depending on drilling conditions, it is anticipated that 4 separate callouts for the geophysical crew may be required to log the entire borehole. The base bid amount for this Subcontract is 4 callouts.

3. General Site Information:

3.1. The Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) is a U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) installation, operated by Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (CONTRACTOR), comprising approximately 3,561 square kilometers (1,375 square miles) of federally owned land located in southeastern Nye County, Nevada. Located approximately 105 kilometers (65 miles) northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, the NNSS is accessed from U.S. Highway 95 toward Mercury (see Figure 1) The RV/DC project site is located in Area 27, approximately 14 miles northwest of Mercury (see Figure 2). The CH will be installed on the center of 3 drill pads that will be constructed on site (see Figure 3).

3.2. The CONTRACTOR also operates the North Las Vegas Facility (NLV); the Remote Sensing Lab at Nellis AFB, North Las Vegas, NV (RSLN); the Remote Sensing Lab at Andrews AFB, Maryland (RSLA);

Special Technologies Lab at Santa Barbara, CA (STL); Livermore Operations at Livermore, CA (LO);

and Los Alamos Operations at Los Alamos, NM (LAO).
