About this file
This is a 2026 Standard Specifications document issued by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) for pavement marking using acrylic waterborne paint. The specification outlines requirements for non-temporary pavement striping, contrast lines, and related markings applied to roadways. The document covers three main product categories: acrylic waterborne pavement marking paint in white, yellow, and black; glass spheres (beads) used in conjunction with the paint; and application and removal procedures for pavement markings. The specification references multiple AASHTO, ASTM, EPA, and federal standards to establish quality benchmarks and includes detailed technical requirements for viscosity, density, color, opacity, and volatile organic compound (VOC) content. Application requirements mandate wet mil thickness of 20-25 mils for longitudinal markings, with specific application rates varying by line width and configuration, and require at least 8 pounds of beads per gallon of paint. The specification was last revised on February 17, 2022.
The document establishes strict performance and quality standards for paint products, including minimum pigment content of 62 percent by weight, total solids of 77 percent, and VOC limits of 100 grams per liter. Glass beads must meet heavy metal concentration limits and exhibit specific physical properties including roundness, hardness (minimum Knoop hardness of 527), and refractive index of at least 1.51. The specification includes a price reduction schedule for pavement markings applied below specified wet mil thickness, ranging from a pay factor of 1.00 for applications less than 2 percent below specification to 0.00 for applications 15 percent or more below specification, with repainting required at contractor cost for deficient work. Application is restricted to ambient and pavement temperatures of 50 degrees Fahrenheit and rising, and UDOT requires notification 24 hours prior to striping operations and qualified applicators approved under UDOT Quality Management Plan 513.
