About this file

This Statement of Work outlines requirements for the purchase, installation, and training of a micromechanical testing system compatible with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) at Argonne National Laboratory. The system will enable researchers to perform micron-scale mechanical testing on radioactive and non-radioactive materials, specifically to measure ion irradiation impacts at the 10s of microns scale and test mechanical/adhesion properties of multilayer coatings through micro-cantilever and micro-tensile tests.

The contractor must deliver and install the main instrument body and submodules within 24 weeks of award, with user training completed by week 28. Installation and training will occur at Argonne's Lemont Campus in building 205 room F125. The system must meet specified noise and instrument resolution requirements, with a heated stage for temperature-relevant testing. This procurement is being conducted as a Lowest Price Technically Acceptable (LPTA) solicitation, with questions due by December 12 at 3:00 PM CST. Offerors must submit completed ANL-70 Request for Quotation, ANL-70B Pre-Award Information, LPTA Form, price justification evidence, and signed Addendum and Acknowledgment forms.

APPENDIX B – Statement of Work Page 3 of 5

Background There is an identified need for a micromechanical testing system compatible with a Scanning Electron Microscope ("SEM"). Micromechanical testing can determine mechanical properties of materials, both radioactive and non-radioactive, at the micron scale. This will enable measuring the impact of ion irradiation on the length scale of 10s of microns. Argonne’s existing irradiation capability compliments testing the mechanical and adhesion properties of multilayer coatings and interfaces through micro cantilever and micro tensile tests. The unique geometry requires this system to be compatible with a SEM for alignment. This also allows for recording the evolution of the material during these tests, which can give further insight into the behavior. Having a heated stage will allow for testing at relevant temperatures, capturing more interdependent mechanisms.

Scope Purchase, installation and training conducted onsite at Argonne National Laboratory of a micromechanical testing system and subcomponents that operates inside of an SEM.

Objectives The objective of this contract is for purchasing a micromechanical testing system that will enable researchers at Argonne to study the mechanical properties of micron scale radioactive and non-radioactive samples through various mechanical tests (indentation, micro-pillar, micro-tensile, micro-cantilever, etc.). This will include the installation and training on system use as well as a maintenance/care program.

Once installed the system will be used by Argonne staff to collect data on the mechanical performance of materials and aid in their development.
