About this file
This is a Geotechnical Study report prepared for the State of Utah's Division of Facilities Construction and Management (DFCM) related to the Cedar City Salt & Equipment Building project. The geotechnical investigation was conducted on December 16, 2024, at the Cedar City Tow Plow Shed site to characterize subsurface soil conditions prior to construction. One test pit (TP-1) was excavated to a depth of 12 feet, revealing soil composition consisting of silty gravel and rotomill tailings at the surface, followed by sandy silt and silty to poorly graded gravel with occasional cobbles and boulders up to 12 inches in size. The soils exhibited varying moisture content and density characteristics, with moisture percentages ranging from 2.5 to 11.3 percent. No groundwater was encountered during the investigation, and the test pit excavation encountered unstable soil conditions at depths beginning around 4 feet where the sides commenced sloughing.
The geotechnical study supports the Stage II Invitation to Bid for construction of a new pre-engineered metal building for equipment and salt storage, with a construction cost estimate of $423,486. This project is restricted to contractors who have been prequalified under DFCM's Stage I Prequalification process and appear on the current DFCM Prequalified Contractors list as of the solicitation date. The scope of work includes replacement of an existing shed building with minor site work also included. The subsurface investigation findings regarding soil stability, composition, and absence of groundwater conditions will inform foundation design and site preparation requirements for the proposed structure.
