Project Background & Overview of the Scope of Work
● This project is for the design and construction of the modernized elevator systems, which have reached the end of their useful lives, in the existing historic Birch Bayh Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. The passenger elevators were installed in 1905, and the current interior cab finishes date back to the 1937 elevator renovation project. Existing controls were engineered by Motion Control Engineering and installed in approximately 1996. Parts are still available for this product; however, the technology is over 20 years old, and the life expectancy is approaching its useful life.
The aged equipment is causing increased costs for repairs and replacement parts due to lack of availability.
● The project scope includes design and construction to modernize six passenger elevators and one freight elevator. To achieve the outlined objectives, the project will include a modernization of existing controllers, machines, fixtures, hoistway and pit equipment, associated machine room, car and hoistway electrical wiring. Historic component consideration will be given to the passenger elevator interiors as they are original to the building and part of the Architectural history of the interior.
