About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document for Request for Quote Number 477787 issued by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) dated July 30, 2026, addressing inquiries regarding air-cooled, switched-mode dipole magnet power supply systems with embedded digital control and DCCT feedback.

The RFQ covers all power supply designations as a bundle rather than separate procurements. Key performance specifications clarified include: transient response characteristics (settling time, recovery time, and overshoot/undershoot) are load-dependent and must be provided by offerors for specified magnet loads; output stability of ≤10 ppm; noise and ripple specifications of less than 0.01% on resistive loads and less than 0.005% on 1 mH inductive loads; current accuracy of less than 0.01% in constant current (CC) mode; temperature coefficient less than 2 ppm/K; and long-term stability less than 5 ppm/K in CC mode. The connected loads consist of Danfysik iron-core dipole magnets with varying inductance and resistance by designation. Regarding safety certification, BNL indicated willingness to consider alternative safety review processes and did not require Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) certification at time of quotation, allowing for certification completion after award but before delivery and final acceptance. Detailed magnet electrical parameters will be provided after award if required for control-loop optimization.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

REQUEST FOR QUOTE NUMBER 477787

AIR-COOLED, SWITCHED-MODE DIPOLE MAGNET POWER SUPPLY SYSTEMS WITH EMBEDDED

DIGITAL CONTROL AND DCCT FEEBACK

July 30, 2026

# QUESTIONS ANSWERS

1 Fast transient response with inductive loads is required (Section 3.3 and 5.5). Can the transient response speed be quantified, such as settling time, recovery time, undershoot/overshoot?

The transient response is load-dependent and is not specified by a single required value. Offerors should provide the expected settling time, recovery time, and overshoot/undershoot characteristics for the proposed power supply when operated with the specified magnet loads.

2 Is the RFQ for all the designations as a bundle or separate for each designation?

All designations.

3 Is ≤10 ppm stability (Section 5.1) of full scale or of output?

Output.

4 Can the RMS ripple, peak-to-peak noise, and performance under inductive loads (Section 5.4) be quantified?

Noise + ripple < 0.01% on resistive load and < 0.005% on 1 mH load.

5 Could you please provide the electrical characteristics of the dipole magnets, including the nominal inductance and resistance values applicable to each power-supply designation?

The connected loads are Danfysik iron-core dipole magnets. The magnet inductance and resistance vary by magnet designation but are generally of the same order of magnitude. The selected power supplies shall be capable of stable operation over the expected range of magnet inductance and resistance. Detailed electrical parameters can be provided after award if required for control-loop optimization."

6 Are there required performance limits for current ripple, long-term current stability, line/load regulation, and regulation accuracy, including any applicable values expressed in parts per million (ppm)? If so, please provide the required limits and the applicable measurement conditions.

Current accuracy < 0.01% in CC mode, temperature coefficient < 2 ppm/K, long-term stability < 5 ppm/K in CC mode.

7 The Draft Purchase Order requires electrical equipment to be certified, listed, or labeled by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).

Could you please clarify:

o whether the complete power-supply systems must already have NRTL certification at the time of quotation;

BNL would consider alternative safety review process.
