About this file
This CFD analysis report details simulations performed to analyze cooling requirements for an infrastructure upgrade project at the Sheridan VA Medical Center data center in Sheridan, Wyoming. Iterative simulations were run adjusting the supply airflow and temperature from a computer room air conditioner unit to achieve an average data rack inlet air temperature of 72 to 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit, with a minimum of 20 degrees temperature difference between supply and return air, as required by VA infrastructure standards. The simulations showed the data rack inlet air temperatures would range from 69 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit with a supply air flow rate of 6,500 cubic feet per minute and supply air temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation from the Department of Veterans Affairs Technology Acquisition Center in Austin for infrastructure upgrades construction work at the Sheridan VA Medical Center data center in Sheridan, Wyoming.

1.0 CFD Modeling
CFD modelling was performed with the new computer room air conditioner (CRAC-1). The backup data center AHU-8B is to be set to the same output parameters (CFM and supply air temperature).
AHU-8B was not included in the CFD model due to the fact it serves the same raised floor plenum and utilizes the same ceiling returns. The results of the CFD model would be the same with either unit running. The data rack layout, air curtain baffles, floor supply tiles and ceiling return grilles were modeled as shown in the plan documents. The results shown below were achieved with a supply air flowrate of 6500cfm and a supply air temperature of 68°F. Iterative simulations were performed adjusting cooling unit airflow and supply air temperature to achieve an average data rack inlet temperature of 72-80.6°F and a minimum of 20° ∆T between supply and return airflow (per the VA Infrastructure Standard for Telecommunications Spaces (ISTS) v4.0 June 1, 2023).
Shown below are the simulation parameters of the cooling unit.
The data rack inlet temperature results are shown in the heatmap below. The average data rack inlet air temperatures range from 69°F to 76°F.
