About this file

This document includes a federal contract opportunity solicitation for construction services to complete a Radiology Suite with CT Scanner and X-Ray Rooms in the Emergency Department at a Veterans Affairs medical center. The solicitation seeks general construction and alteration services per the attached statement of work, drawings, and specifications to demolish and replace elements as required. The period of performance is 180 calendar days from notice to proceed. The magnitude of the project is estimated between $1,000,000 and $2,000,000. The NAICS code is 236220 for commercial and institutional building construction. The small business size standard is $36.5 million. Offerors must be registered in the System for Award Management and VetBiz Vendor Information Pages. The solicitation is issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration Veterans Integrated Service Network 22.

From Siemens provided scatter map:

Air Kerma at 1 m is 0.304 uGy/mAs for 150 kV scan at max collimation of

57.6 mm using 32 cm CTDI phantom.

Assume: (120/150)^2 kV correction factor, and (1/5.76 cm) collimation correction. CTDI for default head/abdo protocols is 47.3/9.8 mGy for 320/150 mAs.

Comments and Recommendations

1. This is a shielding report for a Siemens Somatom Force CT scan room to be installed on the first floor of a multi-story building. The first floor structural deck consists of 6 inches of concrete slab-on-grade. Therefore there is no occupancy below the CT room. There are fully occupied areas above the CT scan room. The 2nd floor structural deck consists of a 4-3/16 inch light-weight concrete slab on top of a metal deck with 3 inch deep flutes. Therefore the average thickness of the 2nd floor deck is 5.6 inches of light-weight concrete. The distance between the first floor and the second floor is 18 feet. No additional lead shielding is required for the ceiling or floor of the CT scan room.

2. All additional lead shielding in the walls will be added to a height of 7 feet (84 inches) to comply with requirements of Title 17, CA Code of Regulations.

3. All shielding requirements are based on NCRP Report #147 (2005): “Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of X-Rays.” Calculations for each barrier are made using the computer software program based on data and assumptions are from NCRP Report # 147.

4. The additional shielding recommendations are designed to meet Radiation Protection Standards as defined by 10 CFR20. Any future changes in either equipment, workload or room design will necessitate a re-evaluation of these shielding requirements.

5. The following assumptions were used in the shielding calculations:

Head CT Workload: 60 patients per week (Busy Patient Work Load).

Body CT Workload: 90 patients per week (Busy Patient Work Load).

6. All junction boxes and other penetrations in lead lined walls must be lined with equivalent thickness of lead with overlapping lead edges. (No gaps in lead lining)

7. Door frames must be steel with lead lining to provide equivalent shielding to the surrounding walls.

For lead thickness's of 1/32 inch or less, the steel door frames do not need lead lining. For doors in walls with lead thickness's of 1/16 or greater, the steel door frames must be lead lined with the same thickness of lead as is in the wall.

8. Control Area window should be of at least 1.58 mm lead.

9. Equivalent thicknesses of lead for existing walls and floors is assumed to be as follows:

2 #/sq ft lead = 0.79 mm = 1/32 inch 4 #/sq ft lead = 1.58 mm = 1/16 inch 6 #/sq ft lead = 2.38 mm = 3/32 inch.

Summary 4/1/2020

VALomaLinda-EmergXray-Shield-20

Comments and Recommendations

1. This is a shielding report for an X-Ray room to be installed on the first floor of a multi-story building. The first floor structural deck consists of 6 inches of concrete slab-on-grade. Therefore there is no occupancy below the X-Ray room. There are fully occupied areas above the X-Ray room. No additional lead shielding is required for the ceiling or floor of the X-Ray room.

2. All additional lead shielding in the walls will be added to a height of 7 feet (84 inches) to comply with requirements of Title 17, CA Code of Regulations.

3. All shielding requirements are based on NCRP Report #147 (2005): “Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of X-Rays.”

Calculations for each barrier are made using the computer software program based on data and assumptions are from NCRP Report # 147.

4. The additional shielding recommendations are designed to meet Radiation Protection Standards as defined by 10 CFR20. Any future changes in either equipment, workload or room design will necessitate a re-evaluation of these shielding requirements.

5. The following assumptions were used in the shielding calculations:

X-ray Workload: 160 patients per week (Busy Patient Work Load).

2 #/sq ft lead = 0.79 mm = 1/32 inch 4 #/sq ft lead = 1.59 mm = 1/16 inch 6 #/sq ft lead = 2.38 mm = 3/32 inch.
