About this file

This document contains responses to requests for information (RFIs) related to a plumbing renovation project at a Veterans Affairs medical center. Key details include clarifying that dead leg piping will be removed where possible, confirming that piping materials include brass and copper, specifying that patching of plaster ceilings is required above new lay-in ceilings, and indicating that 3D coordination drawings are not mandatory but can be provided to illustrate difficult piping arrangements. Response times for future RFIs and submittals are noted as seven and ten days respectively.

Item # RFI # Sheet # or Spec # Question/Issue Response/Comments 1 RFI 01 PP100 1.Drawing PP100 shows domes c cold and hot water to TMV-1. Detail 8 on P-501 shows hot water return to cold water feed and 124 F hot water return from building. The hot water return lines are not shown on Drawing PP100.

Connect a 1" DHWR to the existing domestic hot water recirculation piping just after the return pumps, shown on the drawings. Provide an isolation valve and check valve at the connection. Connect the outlet hot water return to the cold water supply to the water heater system after the cold water inlet check valve.

2 RFI 01 PP103 2.Drawing PP103 shows a TMV-2 in Mechanical 48 but there is no pipe shown to be installed. Is this mixing valve to be installed?

Connect to the piping shown at the water heater approximately 10 feet from the tempering valve. Connect all pipes as indicated in the detail.

3 RFI 01 PP125 3.Drawing PP125 shows a hot water return line to run along the east wall. The note states the pipe to be inside the exterior wall. What size is this line and is it really to be installed inside the outside wall?

This pipe may be run above the Corridor or room ceilings to avoid installation in the exterior wall.

4 RFI 01 P401 4.Drawing P-401 Water Quality Monitor System Schedule states in the Remarks to see Specifica on 221119. This specification is not in the spec book.

The specification section number is 22 67 23.

5 RFI 01 P401 5.Drawing P401 Plumbing Fixture Schedule, Mark P-418-F, Lav faucet, is not shown anywhere on drawings. Is it required and if so where?

This fixture is not used on this project.

6 RFI 01 P501 6.Detail 6 on P-501 shows a temporary booster heater. What size is the water heater and what are the electrical requirements? Also, is this unit to be removed at the completion of the project?

Contractor is to provide only the isolation valves, unions, 36" pipe, and drain cock shown in the "Normal Operation part of the detail.

The "Temporary Eradication" piping, heater, electrical, etc. will be provided by the owner if or when required.

7 RFI 01 P501 7.Detail 6 on P-501 shows a hydrochlorina on unit (Note 1). Is this for the domes c cold water? What is the specification for this unit? Also, is this unit to be removed at the completion of the project?

See Item #6 above.

8 RFI 01 P602 8.Drawing P602 shows Riser 4 for Area A2 and a WQMS at the top of the riser. The drawings don’t show a Riser 4. Is this work required?

Riser 4 no longer exists. Please disregard this riser WQMS and locate all WQMS as shown on the floor plans.

9 RFI 01 9.Several drawings show notes concerning ceiling le removal right beside gypsum ceiling removal. Can we get any more detailed information on what materials are where? Can the VA provide existing Reflected Ceiling Plans for all above ceiling work?

Most areas have older plaster ceilings above new lay-in ceilings.

Patch the plaster ceilings to eliminate openings in it above the lay-in ceilings. There may be a few exposed plaster ceilings that will require patching and painting to match the surrounding areas.

10 RFI 01 10.Are we to assume that non-insulated piping shown with dash marks on new install drawings only need to be insulated and no other work concerning these pipes?

Correct.

11 RFI 01 11.Are there any specs/model numbers in regards to the instantaneous water heater shown on the details?

See Item #6 above.

12 RFI 01 PD101 12.Note 8 on PD101 shows lines to emergency eye wash being demolished. Is this correct? Note 8 should point to the heavy lined piping to the left of the eyewash for removing the piping. The eyewash will remain as is.

13 RFI 01 13.Are we to provide temporary booster unit/hyper chlorina on unit shown in details? See Item #6 above.

14 RFI 01 14.If so, are there specs or model numbers available? See Item #6 above.

550‐18‐112 95% Construction Documents Review Comments

15 RFI 01 15.Detail on TMV-2 does not show where it gets piped into, any info that can be added? See Item #2 above.

16 RFI 01 16.Does the VA have any specific plans in regards to phasing? It looks like pre y much every single dead leg that gets removed is going to have to be scheduled with the facility. We will be cutting valves off, therefore will need to shut down the main in order to facilitate this.

Phasing will be coordinated between the Contractor and the VA.

Please reference the Phasing Notes on Drawing P-001.

17 RFI 01 17.Can we confirm that all exis ng water lines are copper? Existing piping is a mix of brass and copper. The original building domestic water piping was all brass. Newer remodels from approximately 1970's and later are copper.

18 RFI 01 18.For planning and scheduling purposes, can you provide the expected date of award? VA to provide.

19 RFI 01 19.Can you please provide the drawings in Revit (preferably) or CAD (less preferred) for coordina on purposes?

Pending VA confirmation, electronic files will be provided upon award of Contract.

20 RFI 01 20.Please confirm the requirements that 3D coordinated drawings are required for all new MEP systems.” 3D drawings will be accepted if they better show difficult piping arrangement, but in general, 3D coordination drawings are not required. Coordination drawings consisting of plan view, elevation, and/or section drawings are required where the installation differs in arrangement from that shown on the contract documents.

21 RFI 01 21.The specs do not specifically say the number of calendars days for RFI responses and submi al review and approval. This information in necessary for an accurate CPM schedule. Please advise.

RFI: 7 days, Submittal: 10 days, VA to confirm.

22 RFI 001 1.Drawing P-001 Plumbing and architectural notes, note 7: at each plumbing fixture, provide a piston type water hammer arrestor sized according to manufacturer’s recommendation. Does this note apply to all fixtures in the building or just to the work shown on drawings. Please advise.

This applies only at new piping serving a single quick acting valve.

23 RFI 001 2.Please provide wall type (what wall is made of) and finish colors for rooms where patching is needed.

Also provide flooring materials to match.

This is to be coordinated with the VA as needed for the many areas of the building.

24 RFI 001 3.Is there an abatement and lead remedia on report available for this project? VA to provide.

25 RFI 001 4.Is the design intent to leave dead leg piping in the exis ng walls, and remove all above ceiling piping to the main, or are all walls to be opened up to remove all piping? Please advise.

All dead leg piping is to be removed where it can be removed without major damage to walls. Where it is buried in walls, columns, etc. and is very difficult to remove, it may be abandoned in place. Where abandoned, both ends are to be capped or otherwise plugged.

26 RFI 001 5.The Drawings and specifica ons show 3 bid alternates, the solicita on shows 2 alternates. Which is correct?
