STYRENE-BUTADIENE-STYRENE (SBS) MODIFIED BITUMINOUS MEMBRANE ROOFING,
COLD-APPLIED
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:
1. Hybrid Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified bituminous membrane roofing system on concrete deck, including but not limited to:
a. Low-odor roof membrane and membrane base flashings for conventional installation over metal deck.
b. Low-odor roof membrane and membrane base flashings for conventional installation over concrete deck.
c. Low-odor roof membrane and membrane flashings in a PRMA configuration over concrete deck.
1.2 RELATED WORK
A. For wood nailers, wood cants, curbs, and blocking: Section 06 10 00, ROUGH CARPENTRY.
B. For cover board beneath new membrane roofing, Section 07 22 00, ROOF
AND DECK INSULATION.
C. For leveling of concrete deck at PRMA system: Section 07 55 20, CONCRETE DECK LEVELING.

1.3 DEFINITIONS
A. Roofing Terminology: See ASTM D 1079 and glossary of NRCA's "The NRCA
Roofing and Waterproofing Manual" for definition of terms related to roofing work in this Section.
1.4 SUBSTITUTION
A. Contractor may submit for consideration a roofing system of comparable quality, as determined by the Contracting Officer. Substitution requests must be submitted for review to the Contracting Officer no later than 21 days prior to delivery of bid.

1. Requests received after that time may be considered or rejected at the sole discretion of the Contracting Officer.
2. Contracting Officer will notify contractor of acceptance or rejection of proposed substitution within 14 days of receipt of request.
3. Contractor shall use product specified if Contracting Officer does not issue a decision on use of the proposed substitution.
B. Contractor shall investigate and document compatibility of proposed substitution with related products and materials.
C. Contractor shall be responsible to adjust or revise affected work as necessary to integrate work of the approved substitution.
D. Substitution request shall include cover sheet clearly indicating product to be replaced, including specification number and title.
Contractor shall include sufficient documentation for the Contracting
Officer to render a decision including but not limited to:
1. Statement indicating that requested substitution is consistent with the specified product and will produce indicated results, and:
a. Requested substitution will not adversely affect Contractor's construction schedule.
b. Requested substitution does not require revisions to the Contract
Documents.
c. Requested substitution is compatible with other portions of the
Work.
d. Requested substitution has been coordinated with other portions of the Work.
e. Requested substitution provides specified warranty.
f. Requested substitution has been coordinated with other portions of the Work, is uniform and consistent, is compatible with other products, and is acceptable to all contractors involved.
2. Detailed comparison of significant qualities of proposed substitution with those of the Work specified. Include annotated copy of applicable Specification Section. Significant qualities may include attributes such as performance, weight, size, durability, visual effect, sustainable design characteristics, warranties, and specific features and requirements indicated. Indicate deviations, if any, from the Work specified.

3. Product Data, including drawings and descriptions of products and fabrication and installation procedures.
4. Certificates and qualification data, where applicable or requested.
5. Material test reports from a qualified testing agency indicating and interpreting test results for compliance with requirements indicated.
6. Contractor's certification that proposed substitution complies with requirements in the Contract Documents except as indicated in substitution request, is compatible with related materials, and is appropriate for applications indicated.
7. Contractor's waiver of rights to additional payment or time that may subsequently become necessary because of failure of proposed substitution to produce indicated results.
E. Substituted roof membrane materials shall comply with the criteria of this specification, except as follows:
1. Overall thickness:
a. 2 ply conventional roof system: not less than 240 mil, excluding the vapor barrier.
b. 3 ply conventional roof system: not less than 330 mil, excluding the vapor barrier.
c. PRMA roof system: not less than 240 mil, excluding the vapor barrier.
2. Minimum thickness of any ply: 80 mil.
3. Base Sheet: SBS Rubber modified roofing base sheet reinforced with a fiberglass and polyester composite scrim with the following characteristics (based on 80 mil):
a. Tensile Strength at 73.4 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D
5147: Machine direction, 550 lbf/in (96.2 kN/m); Cross machine direction, 550 lbf/in (96.2 kN/m).
b. Elongation at maximum tensile at 73.4 deg. F (23 deg C), minimum, ASTM D 5147: Machine direction, 9%; Cross machine direction, 9%.
c. Tear Strength at 73.4 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147:
Machine direction, 1,000 lbf (4,448 N); Cross machine direction, 1,000 lbf (4,448 N).
d. Low Temperature Flexibility, minimum, ASTM D 5147: -40 deg. F (-
40 deg. C).

4. Cap Sheet (Conventional): Type III, Grade G, SBS and SIS rubber modified membrane incorporating post-consumer recycled rubber and reinforced with a fiberglass and polyester composite scrim with the following characteristics (based on 170 mil):
a. Tensile Strength at 73.4 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D
5147: Machine direction, 1,000 lbf/in (175 kN/m); Cross machine direction, 1,100lbf/in (192.5 kN/m).
b. Elongation at maximum tensile at 73.4 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147: Machine direction, 16%; Cross machine direction, 16%.
c. Tear Strength at 73.4 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147:
Machine direction, 1,500 lbf (6,672.3 N); Cross machine direction, 1,700 lbf (7,561.6 N).
d. Low Temperature Flexibility, minimum, ASTM D 5147: -40 deg. F (-
40 deg. C).
5. Cap Sheet (PRMA): Type III, Grade G, SBS rubber modified roofing membrane with dual fiberglass reinforced scrim with the following characteristics (based on 80 mil.):
a. Tensile Strength at 73.4 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D
5147: Machine direction, 220 lbf/in (38.5 kN/m) ; Cross machine direction, 220 lbf/in (38.5 kN/m).
b. Elongation at maximum tensile at 73.4 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147: Machine direction, 4.5%; Cross machine direction, 4.5%.
c. Tear Strength at 73.4 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147:
Machine direction, 300 lbf (1,335 N); Cross machine direction, 300 lbf (1,335 N).
d. Low Temperature Flexibility, minimum, ASTM D 5147: -30 deg. F (-
34.4 deg. C).
1.5 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit in accordance with Section 01 33 23, SHOP DRAWINGS, PRODUCT
DATA, SAMPLES.
B. Product Data: For each type of product indicated.
C. Shop Drawings: For roofing system. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. Provide roof plan showing orientation and types of roof deck, orientation of membrane roofing, 07 52 16.13 - 5 and fastening spacings and patterns for mechanically fastened components.
1. Base flashings and built-up terminations.
a. Indicate details meet requirements of NRCA and FMG required by this Section.
2. Tapered insulation, including slopes.
3. Crickets, saddles, and tapered edge strips, including slopes.
4. Insulation fastening patterns for corner, perimeter, and field-of-roof locations.
D. Samples:
1. Sheet roofing materials, of color specified for exposed material.
2. 1 lb. (0.5 kg) of aggregate surfacing material in gradation and color indicated.
3. Metal termination bars.
4. Walkway materials.
5. Six insulation fasteners of each type, length, and finish.
E. Contractor's Product Certificate: Submit notarized certificate, indicating products intended for Work of this Section, including manufacturer's name, product names and product numbers, with statement indicating that products to be provided meet the requirements of the
Contract Documents.
F. Qualification Data: For Installer, Manufacturer, and Roofing Inspector.
1. Include letter from Manufacturer written for this Project indicating approval of Installer.
2. Include list of projects of similar scope and type completed by
Installer within a 250 mile radius of this project and within the last two years.
G. Manufacturer Certificates: Signed by roofing manufacturer certifying that roofing system complies with requirements specified in
"Performance Requirements" Article.
1. Submit evidence of compliance with performance requirements, including UL listing certificate, FM Global system approval and roofing membrane system load/strain property test report.
2. Indicate that proposed system components are compatible.
H. Product Test Reports: Based on evaluation of comprehensive tests performed by manufacturer and witnessed by a qualified testing agency, for components of built-up roofing.

I. Warranties: Unexecuted sample copies of special warranties.
J. Field Quality Control Reports: Daily reports of Roofing Inspector.
Include weather conditions, description of work performed, tests performed, defective work observed, and corrective actions taken to correct defective work.
1.6 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS
A. Maintenance Data: To include in maintenance manuals.
B. Warranties: Executed copies of warranties.
1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Installer Qualifications: An employer of workers trained and certified by manufacturer, with a minimum of five years' experience installing products comparable to those specified, able to communicate verbally with Contractor, Architect, and employees, and qualified by the manufacturer to install manufacturer's product and furnish warranty of type specified. Installer shall provide during re-roofing operations a full-time on-site supervisor with a minimum of three years' experience installing specified roof system, to oversee Installers Work.
B. Manufacturer Qualifications: Manufacturer with UL listed and FM Global approved roofing systems comparable to those specified for this
Project, with minimum five years' experience in manufacture of comparable products in successful use in similar applications, and able to furnish warranty with provisions matching specified requirements.
C. Roofing Inspector Qualifications: A technical representative of manufacturer not engaged in the sale of products and experienced in the installation and maintenance of the specified roofing system, qualified to perform roofing observation and inspection specified in Field
Quality Control Article, to determine Installer's compliance with the requirements of this Project, and approved by the manufacturer to issue warranty certification. The Roofing Inspector shall be one of the following:
1. An authorized full-time technical employee of the manufacturer.
2. An independent party certified as a Registered Roof Observer by the
Roof Consultants Institute, retained by the Contractor or the
Manufacturer and approved by the Manufacturer.
D. Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Obtain and maintain on-site manufacturer's written recommendations and instructions for installation of products.

1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Deliver roofing materials to Project site in original containers with seals unbroken and labeled with manufacturer's name, product brand name and type, date of manufacture, approval or listing agency markings, and directions for storing and mixing with other components.
B. Store liquid materials in their original undamaged containers in a clean, dry, protected location and within the temperature range required by roofing system manufacturer. Protect stored liquid material from direct sunlight.
1. Discard and legally dispose of liquid material that cannot be applied within its stated shelf life.
C. Protect roof insulation materials from physical damage and from deterioration by sunlight, moisture, soiling, and other sources. Store in a dry location. Comply with insulation manufacturer's written instructions for handling, storing, and protecting during installation.
D. Handle and store roofing materials and place equipment in a manner to avoid permanent deflection of deck.
1.9 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Weather Limitations: Proceed with installation only when existing and forecasted weather conditions permit roofing system to be installed according to manufacturer's written instructions and warranty requirements.
B. Daily Protection: Coordinate installation of roofing so insulation and other components of roofing system not permanently exposed are not subjected to precipitation or left uncovered at the end of the workday or when rain is forecast.
1. Provide tie-offs at end of each day's work to cover exposed roofing and insulation with a course of roofing sheet securely in place with joints and edges sealed.
2. Complete terminations and base flashings and provide temporary seals to prevent water from entering completed sections of roofing.
3. Remove temporary plugs from roof drains at end of each day.
4. Remove and discard temporary seals before beginning work on adjoining roofing.
1.10 WARRANTY
A. Warranty, General: Warranties specified shall be in addition to, and run concurrent with, other warranties required by the Contract

Documents. Manufacturer's disclaimers and limitations on product warranties do not relieve Contractor of obligations under requirements of the Contract Documents.
1. Roofing work subject to the terms of the Article “Warranty of
Construction”, FAR clause 52.246-21, except extend warranty period to 20 years – No Dollar Limit (NDL) from acceptance of facility by the Government. Warranty period shall commence on the Date of
Substantial Completion for the project.
2. Leak Response Guarantee: Warranty Documents shall include provisions that the warranting parties (manufacturer and installer) will provide a two (2) hour on-site response guarantee for emergency conditions (as determined by the VAMC) or twenty-four (24) hour response time for non-emergency conditions.
3. Warranties specified in this Section include the following components and systems specified in other sections supplied by the roofing system Manufacturer, and installed by the roofing system
Installer:
a. Sheet metal flashing and trim, including roof penetration flashings.
b. Manufactured copings, roof edge, counterflashings, and reglets.
c. Roof curbs, hatches, and penetration flashings.
d. Roof and parapet expansion joint assemblies.
e. Metal roof, wall, and soffit panels and trim.
B. Manufacturer's Warranty PRMA Roof over Concrete Deck: Warranties shall be issued as “Total Performance Warranties” and shall cover all components that form the roof assembly from the top surface of the concrete deck to the top surface of the composite paver panel system, including, but not limited to the waterproofing membranes, drainage mat, insulation, pavers and all anchorage systems at the deck level and at the surface, flashings, counterflashings and reglets, and manufactured copings and roof edge metals. All components of the waterproofing installation that are to be covered under the terms of the warranty should be expressly itemized in the Warranty or Warranty
Rider.
1. Membrane: The waterproofing membranes warranted against leaks for a period of twenty (20) years.

2. Insulation: The insulation is to retain 80% of its original thermal value for a period of twenty (20) years.
3. Pavers: The pavers will not crack, split, spall or disintegrate as a result of freeze- thaw cycling for a period of fifteen (15) years.
4. Warranty shall not exclude and will specifically include removing and replacing overburdens on PRMA systems as necessary to effect warranty repairs.
C. Manufacturer's Warranty Conventional Roof over Metal or Concrete Deck:
Manufacturer's standard or customized form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of built-up roofing that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period. Failure includes roof leaks.
1. The manufacturer’s single-source, total performance warranty shall cover all roof system components that form the roof assembly from the top surface of the metal or concrete deck to the top surface of the roof membrane, including, but not limited to all roofing membrane and flashing systems, all forms of insulation, cover board and all anchorage systems at the deck level and the surface.
D. Contractor's Guarantee: The contractor shall furnish a two (2) year NDL guarantee to the Owner for all roof membranes, flashing, insulation, cover board, pavers, sheet metal, railings, and all other roof components that make up the complete waterproof, wind resistance roof assembly. This guarantee shall cover all labor, materials, workmanship and all related work installed by this contractor including, but not limited to, all membrane components, flashing, insulation, sheet metal, pavers, etc.
1. Guarantee that shall commence on Date of Substantial Completion of the project.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS, GENERAL
A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products by a single manufacturer meeting qualification requirements in
Quality Assurance Article.
B. Source Limitations: Obtain components for roofing system from same manufacturer as membrane roofing or manufacturer approved by membrane roofing manufacturer.

2.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. General Performance: Roofing shall withstand exposure to weather without failure or leaks due to defective manufacture or installation.
1. Accelerated Weathering: Roofing system shall withstand 2000 hours of exposure when tested according to ASTM G 152, ASTM G 154, or ASTM G
155.
2. Impact Resistance: Roofing system shall resist impact damage when tested according to ASTM D 3746 or ASTM D 4272.
B. Material Compatibility: Provide roofing materials that are compatible with one another under conditions of service and application required, as demonstrated by membrane roofing manufacturer based on testing and field experience.
C. Roofing System Design: Provide roofing system that is identical to systems that have been successfully tested by a qualified testing and inspecting agency in accordance with ANSI/FM 4474, UL 580, or UL 1897, and to resist uplift pressures.
1. All Zones (Corner, Perimeter, and Field-of-Roof) Uplift Pressures:
As indicated on Drawings.
D. FM Global Standards: Roofing, base flashings, and component materials shall be identical to materials that comply with requirements in FM
Global 4470 as part of a roofing system listed or approved by FM Global for Class 1 or non-combustible construction, as applicable. Identify applicable materials with FM
1. Fire/Windstorm Classification: Class 1A-90.
2. Hail Resistance Rating: SH.
E. SPRI Wind Design Standard: Manufacture and install copings and roof edge flashings tested according to SPRI ES-1 and capable of resisting the following design pressures:
1. Design Pressure: As indicated on Drawings.
F. Flashings and Fastening: Comply with requirements of Section 07 60 00, FLASHING AND SHEET METAL and Section 7 71 00, ROOF SPECIALTIES.
Provide base flashings, perimeter flashings, detail flashings and component materials and installation techniques that comply with requirements and recommendations of the following:
1. FM Global 1-49: Loss Prevention Data Sheet for Perimeter Flashings.
2. FM Global 1-29: Loss Prevention Data Sheet for Above Deck Roof
Components.

3. NRCA Roofing Manual (Sixth Edition) for construction details and recommendations.
4. SMACNA Architectural Sheet Metal Manual (Seventh Edition) for construction details.
G. Fire-Resistance Ratings: Where indicated, provide fire-resistance-rated roof assemblies identical to those of assemblies tested for fire resistance per ASTM E 119 by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency.
2.3 ROOFING MEMBRANE MATERIALS
A. Vapor Retarder and Base Sheet:
1. ASTM D 6163 Type III Grade S SBS-modified asphalt-coated composite glass fiber mat / glass fiber scrim sheet, dusted with fine mineral surfacing on both sides.
a. Tensile Strength at 0 deg. F (-18 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147:
Machine direction, 200 lbf/in (35.0 kN/m); Cross machine direction, 180 lbf/in (31.5 kN/m).
b. Elongation at 0 deg. F (-18 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147: 3.0 percent.
c. Tear Strength at 77 deg. F (25 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147:
Machine direction 200 lbf (0.9 kN); Cross machine direction, 220 lbf (1.0 kN).
d. Low Temperature Flexibility, minimum, ASTM D 5147: -5 deg. F (-20 deg. C).
e. Thickness, minimum, ASTM D 5147: 0.120 inch (3.0 mm).
B. SBS Modified Bituminous Cap Sheet:
1. ASTM D 6163 Type I Grade S SBS/SIS/SEBS-modified asphalt-coated glass-fiber reinforced sheet, smooth surfaced (PRMA system) or granulated (Conventional system).
a. Tensile Strength at 73 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147:
70 lbf/in (12.3 kN/m) machine direction; 50 lbf/in (8.8 kN/m) cross-machine direction.
b. Tear Strength at 73 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147: 100 lbf (445 N) machine direction; 80 lbf (400 N) machine direction.
c. Elongation at 73 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147: 4 percent.
d. Low Temperature Flex, ASTM D 5147: -30 deg. F (-23 deg. C).
e. Thickness, ASTM D 5147: 0.118 inch (3.0 mm).

C. Base Flashing Material:
1. Flashing Cap Sheet: Granular surface on both conventional and PRMA roof systems.
a. Color: White.
2. ASTM D 6163 Type I Grade G SBS-modified asphalt-coated glass-fiber-reinforced sheet, granular surfaced.
a. Exterior Fire-Test Exposure, ASTM E 108: Class A.
b. Tensile Strength at 73 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147:
Machine direction 80.0 lbf/in (14.0 kN/m); Cross machine direction 70.0 lbf/in (12.0 kN/m).
c. Tear Strength at 73 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147:
Machine direction, 100 lbf (440 N); Cross machine direction 100 lbf (440 N).
d. Elongation at 73 deg. F (23 deg. C), minimum, ASTM D 5147:
Machine direction 7.5 percent; Cross machine direction 7.5 percent.
e. Low Temperature Flex, maximum, ASTM D 5147: -15 deg. F (-26 deg.
C).
f. Thickness, minimum, ASTM D 5147: 0.120 inch (3 mm).
2.4 COLD-APPLIED ADHESIVE MATERIALS
A. General: Adhesive and sealant materials recommended by roofing system manufacturer for intended use and compatible with roofing membrane.
1. Liquid-type auxiliary materials shall comply with VOC limits of authorities having jurisdiction.
2. Adhesives and sealants that are not on the exterior side of weather barrier shall comply with the following limits for VOC content when calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24):
a. Plastic Foam Adhesives: 50 g/L.
b. Gypsum Board and Panel Adhesives: 50 g/L.
c. Multipurpose Construction Adhesives: 70 g/L.
d. Fiberglass Adhesives: 80 g/L.
e. Contact Adhesives: 80 g/L.
f. Other Adhesives: 250 g/L.
g. Nonmembrane Roof Sealants: 300 g/L.
h. Sealant Primers for Nonporous Substrates: 250 g/L.
i. Sealant Primers for Porous Substrates: 775 g/L.

3. Two part foaming insulation adhesive may be utilized if approved by the roof system manufacturer.
B. Base Sheet Adhesive:
1. Cold-applied bio-based low odor urethane roofing adhesive, two-part, USDA BIOPreferred, formulated for compatibility and use with specified roofing membranes and flashings.
a. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), maximum, ASTM D 3690: 1 g/L.
b. Low Temperature Flexibility, ASTM D 2240: 88 Shore A.
c. Solids, by Volume, ASTM D 2697: 100 percent.
d. Biobase Content, ASTM D 6866: Not less than 70 percent.
C. Cap Sheet Adhesive:
1. Cold-applied bio-based low odor urethane roofing adhesive, two-part, USDA BIOPreferred, formulated for compatibility and use with specified roofing membranes and flashings.
a. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), maximum, ASTM D 3690: 1 g/L.

2.5 SUBSTRATE BOARD
A. Substrate Board: ASTM C 1177/C 1177M, glass-mat, water-resistant gypsum substrate, Type X, 5/8 inch (16 mm) thick.
B. Fasteners: Factory-coated steel fasteners and metal or plastic plates complying with corrosion-resistance provisions in FM Approvals 4470, designed for fastening substrate board to roof deck.
2.6 ROOF WALKWAY PADS
A. Provide roof walkway pads at Roofs 1 & 2, where shown on drawings.
B. Roof Walkway Pads: Prefabricated asphalt plank consisting of a homogeneous core of asphalt, plasticizers and inert fillers, bonded by heat and pressure between two saturated and coated sheets of felt:
1. Top side of plank surfaced with ceramic granules. Granule Color:
White.
2. Size: Minimum 1/2-inch thick, manufacturer’s standard size, but not less than 24 inches by 24 inches in any direction.
3. Surfacing of the walk pads shall match the surfacing of the field membrane cap sheet.
2.7 AUXILIARY ROOFING MATERIALS
A. General: Auxiliary materials recommended by roofing system manufacturer for intended use and compatible with roofing membrane.
B. Stripping Reinforcing Fabric:
1. Polyester Reinforcing Fabric: 100 percent stitch-bonded mildew-resistant polyester fabric intended for reinforcement of compatible fluid-applied membranes and flashings.
a. Tensile Strength, ASTM D 1682: Not less than 50 lbf. (222 N).

60 00, FLASHING AND SHEET METAL.
F. Miscellaneous Accessories: Provide miscellaneous accessories recommended by roofing system manufacturer.
1. Accessory Fasteners: Corrosion-resistant fasteners compatible with adjacent materials and recommended for application by manufacturer of component to be fastened.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with the following requirements and other conditions affecting performance of roofing system:
1. Verify that roof openings and penetrations are in place and curbs are set and braced and that roof drain bodies are securely clamped in place.
2. Verify that wood cants, blocking, curbs, and nailers are securely anchored to roof deck at penetrations and terminations and that nailers match thicknesses of insulation.
3. Steel Roof Deck:
a. Verify that surface plane flatness and fastening of steel roof deck complies with requirements in Section 05 31 43, STEEL DECK
REHABILITATION.
b. Verify that deck is securely fastened with no projecting fasteners and with no adjacent units in excess of 1/16 inch (1.6
mm) out of plane relative to adjoining deck.
4. Concrete Roof Deck:
a. Verify that concrete substrate is visibly dry and free of moisture. Test for capillary moisture by plastic sheet method according to ASTM D 4263.
b. Verify that concrete curing compounds that will impair adhesion of roofing components to roof deck have been removed.

B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Verify that demolition and removal of existing roof system membrane, flashings, sheet metal, cover board, and insulation is complete and in accordance with Section 07 01 50, PREPARATION FOR RE-ROOFING.
B. Complete roof deck inspection and repairs prior to commencing roofing work:
1. Install blocking, edge strips, nailers, cants, and other components where insulation, roofing, and base flashing is attached to, in place ready to receive insulation and roofing.
2. Complete deck and insulation to provide designed drainage to working roof drains.
3. Document installation of related materials to be concealed prior to installing roofing work.
C. Dry out surfaces, including the flutes of metal deck that become wet from any cause during progress of the work before roofing work is resumed. Apply materials to dry substrates.
D. Clean substrate of dust, debris, moisture, and other substances detrimental to roofing installation according to roofing system manufacturer's written instructions. Remove sharp projections.
E. Prevent materials from entering and clogging roof drains and conductors and from spilling or migrating onto surfaces of other construction.
Remove roof-drain plugs when no work is taking place or when rain is forecast.
F. Concrete Surface Priming: Prime surface of concrete deck with asphalt primer at a rate of 3/4 gal./100 sq. ft. (0.3 L/sq. m) and allow primer to dry.
3.3 TEMPORARY PROTECTION
A. Install temporary protection at the end of day's work and when work is halted for an indefinite period or work is stopped when precipitation is imminent. Comply with approved temporary protection plan.
B. Install temporary cap flashing over the top of base flashings where permanent flashings are not in place to provide protection against moisture entering the roof system through or behind the base flashing.
Securely anchor in place to prevent blow off and damage by construction activities.

1. Glaze coat exposed surfaces of felts to seal within the bitumen coating. Do not leave felt surfaces or edges exposed.
C. Provide for removal of water or drainage of water away from the work.
D. Provide temporary protection over installed roofing by means of duckboard walkways, plywood platforms, or other materials, as approved by Resident Engineer, for roof areas that are to remain intact, and that are subject to foot traffic and damage. Provide notches in sleepers to permit free drainage.
3.4 INSTALLATION, GENERAL
A. Install roofing system in accordance with manufacturer's written installation recommendations.
B. FM Approvals Installation Standard: Install roofing membrane, base flashings, wood cants, blocking, curbs, and nailers, and component materials in compliance with requirements in FMG 4470 as part of a membrane roofing system as listed in FMG's "Approval Guide" for fire/windstorm classification indicated. Comply with recommendations in
FMG Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-49, including requirements for wood nailers and cants.
C. NRCA Installation Standard: Install roofing system in accordance with applicable NRCA Manual Plates and NRCA recommendations, including
ARMA/NRCA's "Quality Control Guidelines for the Application of Polymer
Modified Bitumen Roofing".
3.5 SUBSTRATE BOARD INSTALLATION
A. Install substrate board with long edge joints in continuous straight lines, perpendicular to roof slopes with end joints staggered between rows and solidly bearing on top of decking ribs. Tightly butt substrate boards together.
1. Fasten substrate board to top flanges of steel deck according to recommendations in FM Global's "RoofNav" and FM Global Loss
Prevention Data Sheet 1-29 for specified Windstorm Resistance
Classification.
3.6 VAPOR-RETARDER INSTALLATION
A. Vapor Retarder Installation, General: Completely seal vapor retarder/air barrier at terminations, obstructions, and penetrations to prevent air movement into roofing system. Seal vapor retarder/air barrier to air barrier in adjacent construction at perimeter of roofing system.

B. SBS Modified Sheet Vapor Retarder: Install one lapped vapor retarder course and adhere in a solid application of cold-applied adhesive, according to roofing system manufacturer's written instructions.
1. Install over substrate boards on metal deck in conventional roof system.
2. Install direct to concrete deck in PRMA system.
3.7 COLD-APPLIED ROOFING MEMBRANE INSTALLATION, GENERAL
A. Deck Type: Metal deck with substrate board or concrete deck.
B. Number of Smooth-Surfaced SBS-Modified Asphalt Sheets: Two or three, as indicated on Drawings.
1. Adhering Method: Cold-adhesive applied.
C. Start installation of roofing membrane in presence of roofing system manufacturer's technical personnel.
D. Cooperate with testing agencies engaged or required to perform services for installing roofing system.
E. Coordinate installation of roofing system so insulation and other components of the roofing membrane system not permanently exposed are not subjected to precipitation or left uncovered at the end of the workday or when rain is forecast.
1. Provide tie-offs at end of each day's work configured as recommended by NRCA Roofing Manual Appendix: Quality Control Guidelines -
Insulation to protect new and existing roofing.
2. Complete terminations and base flashings and provide temporary seals to prevent water from entering completed sections of roofing.
3. Remove temporary plugs from roof drains at end of each day.
4. Remove and discard temporary seals before beginning work on adjoining roofing.
F. Substrate-Joint Penetrations: Prevent roofing asphalt and adhesives from penetrating substrate joints, entering building, or damaging roofing system components or adjacent building construction.
3.8 DECK LEVELING INSTALLATION ON PRMA
A. Inspect roof area for ponding.
B. Install deck leveling in accordance with Section 07 55 20, CONCRETE
DECK LEVELING.
3.9 INSULATION INSTALLATION
A. Install insulation for conventional roof system in accordance with
Section 07 22 00, ROOF AND DECK INSULATION.

3.10 BASE-SHEET INSTALLATION
A. Install lapped base-sheet course, extending sheet over and terminating beyond cants. Attach base sheet as follows:
1. Adhere to substrate in uniform coating of cold-applied adhesive.
3.11 SBS-MODIFIED BITUMINOUS MEMBRANE INSTALLATION
A. Install modified bituminous roofing membrane cap sheet according to roofing manufacturer's written instructions, starting at low point of roofing system. Extend roofing membrane sheets over and terminate beyond cants, installing as follows:
1. Unroll roofing membrane sheets and allow them to relax for minimum time period required by manufacturer.
2. Embed each ply sheet in cold-applied membrane adhesive applied at rate required by roofing manufacturer.
B. Laps: Accurately align roofing membrane sheets, without stretching, and maintain uniform side and end laps. Stagger end laps. Install roofing membrane sheets so side and end laps shed water. Completely bond and seal laps, leaving no voids.
1. Repair tears and voids in laps and lapped seams not completely sealed.
2. Apply roofing granules to cover exuded bead at laps.
3.12 HEAT-WELDING
A. Heat-welding of cap sheet seams or flashing joints shall be permitted only when specifically recommended by roof system manufacturer.
3.13 FLASHING AND STRIPPING INSTALLATION
A. Base Flashing Installation, General: Install base flashing over cant strips and other sloped and vertical surfaces, at roof edges, and at penetrations through roof; secure to substrates according to roofing system manufacturer's written instructions, and as follows:
1. Extend base flashing up walls or parapets a minimum of 12 inches
(300 mm) above built-up roofing and 6 inches (150 mm) onto field of built-up roofing.
2. Prime substrates with primer if required by roofing system manufacturer.
B. Backer Sheet Installation: Apply backer sheet to substrate as follows:
1. Mechanically fasten backer sheet to vertical surfaces. Adhere backer sheet over built-up roofing at cants in cold-applied flashing sheet adhesive.

2. Adhere backer sheet to substrate with cold-applied flashing sheet adhesive.
C. Flashing Sheet Installation: Adhere flashing sheet to substrate in cold-applied adhesive. Apply cold-applied flashing sheet adhesive to back of flashing sheet if recommended by roofing manufacturer.
1. Flashing Sheet Top Termination: Mechanically fasten top of base flashing securely at terminations and perimeter of roofing.
a. Seal top termination of base flashing with a metal termination bar.
2. Flashing Sheet Bottom Termination: Adhere flashing sheet to roofing membrane in continuous bed of cold-applied adhesive.
a. Bituminous Flashing: Seal bottom termination of base flashing by adhering to roofing membrane and sealing flashing edge with joint sealant.
b. Elastomeric Flashing Sheet: Seal bottom termination of base flashing by adhering to roofing membrane with cold-applied adhesive and sealing flashing-to-membrane joint with joint sealant.
D. Fluid-Applied Flashing Application: Apply base coat with embedded fabric reinforcement and top coat at parapets, curbs, penetrations, and drains in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions.
1. Apply base coat at minimum wet mil coating thickness of 48 mils unless greater thickness is recommended by manufacturer.
2. Apply top coat over field base coat and spread coating evenly. Apply top coat at minimum wet mil thickness of 32 mils unless greater thickness is recommended by manufacturer.
E. Metal Flashing Stripping: Install roofing membrane cap sheet stripping where metal flanges and edgings are set on membrane roofing according to roofing system manufacturer's written instructions.
F. Roof Drains: Set 30 by 30 inch (760 by 760 mm) square metal flashing in bed of asphalt roofing cement on completed roofing membrane. Cover metal flashing with roofing membrane cap sheet stripping and extend a minimum of 6 inches (150 mm) beyond edge of metal flashing onto field of roofing membrane. Clamp roofing membrane, metal flashing, and stripping into roof-drain clamping ring.
1. Install stripping according to roofing system manufacturer's written instructions.

3.14 SURFACING AND COATING INSTALLATION
A. Flood Coat and Granular Aggregate Surfacing: Promptly after installing and testing roofing membrane, base flashing, and stripping, flood-coat roof surface with cold-applied adhesive surfacing adhesive applied at rate required by roofing manufacturer. Cast the following average weight of aggregate in a uniform course:
1. Aggregate Weight: 400 lb./100 sq. ft. (20 kg/sq. m).
B. Acrylic Emulsion Coating over Cold-Applied Surfacing: Coat roofing membrane surface with cold-applied adhesive surfacing adhesive applied at rate required by roofing manufacturer.
1. Acrylic Emulsion Coating: Apply coating to roofing membrane and base flashings in not less than two coats, with number of coats, thickness of application, and application method as recommended in writing by coating manufacturer.
3.15 WALKWAY PAD INSTALLATION
A. Install walkway pads in locations indicated on Drawings.
B. Walkway Pads: Install walkway pads using units of size specified according to walkway pad manufacturer's written instructions.
1. Sweep away loose aggregate surfacing.
2. Set walkway pads in cold-applied adhesive.
3.16 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Interim Roofing Inspections: Roofing system manufacturer will provide a qualified roofing inspector to perform roof tests and interim inspections, and to prepare inspection reports.
1. Roofing inspector shall provide a minimum of 12 interim inspections including a written report for each inspection of work in process.
2. Roofing Inspector's quality assurance inspections shall comply with criteria established in ARMA/NRCA's "Quality Control Guidelines for the Application of Built-up Roofing."
3. Submit final inspection report to Architect and COR.
B. Final Roof Inspection: Arrange for roofing system manufacturer's technical personnel to inspect roofing installation at commencement and upon completion of each roof area.
1. Inspection shall occur within 14 days of achieving substantial completion of each roof area.
2. Notify Architect and Owner a minimum 7 calendar days in advance of date and time of final inspection.

3. Submit final inspection report to Architect and COR, and include in closeout documents.
C. Repair or remove and replace components of built-up roofing where test results or inspections indicate that they do not comply with specified requirements.
1. Any additional testing and inspections required to determine if replaced or additional work complies with specified requirements, shall be performed at contractor's sole expense.
3.17 PROTECTING AND CLEANING
A. Protect roofing system from damage and wear during remainder of construction period. When remaining construction will not affect or endanger roofing, inspect roofing for deterioration and damage, describing its nature and extent in a written report, with copies to
Architect and Owner.
B. Correct deficiencies in or remove roofing system that does not comply with requirements, repair substrates, and repair or reinstall roofing system to a condition free of damage and deterioration at time of
Substantial Completion and according to warranty requirements.
C. Clean overspray and spillage from adjacent construction using cleaning agents and procedures recommended by manufacturer of affected construction.
D. Inspect underside of Roof 2 for loose or dislodged spray-on fireproofing at conclusion of roofing system installation. Repair in accordance with Section 07 81 00, SPRAY FIRE-RESISTANT MATERIALS.
