About this file

This is a 95% Design Analysis document prepared by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, for the Gaffney Fitness Center (Building 6330) located at Fort Meade, Maryland. The project encompasses a comprehensive structural assessment and design analysis of the facility's sundeck, prepared by Feliks Plotnikov in July 2019 and updated in August 2026. The analysis evaluates the existing structural capacity of primary beams (W8x10 and W12x36), secondary support members (C3 channels), columns, and foundations supporting the sundeck. The document includes detailed load calculations incorporating dead loads, live loads per ASCE7-16 standards, and mechanical loads from existing ductwork and piping systems. The analysis determines that existing W8 beams are adequate without deterioration or additional mechanical loads, while existing W12 beams are overstressed and require replacement due to excessive deflection and section losses. The recommended solution specifies replacement with W12x45 beams and reduction of W8 beam spacing from 4 feet to 2 feet, with total design loads calculated at 125 psf including mechanical equipment loads.

The structural assessment reveals significant deterioration of existing steel members, particularly bottom flanges of W12 beams, necessitating new primary beam design specifications. Existing columns (tubular steel 4x4x1/4) and foundations are determined adequate under the proposed design loads, with soil bearing pressure at 1,522.28 psf against an allowable minimum of 1,800 psf. The design incorporates deflection limits per ASCE7-16 and AISC standards, with span deflection limits of L/360 and cantilever deflection limits of L/150. The document supports Auburn University's request for a service provider capable of conducting assessment and repair design of the sundeck structure at Fort Meade, Maryland, providing the technical foundation and existing conditions analysis necessary for bid development and construction planning.

Conclusion: W8 beams without section losses and without pipes and duct load are adequate.

RISA bending stress code check

W12 beam is overstressed in the span. N.G. Additionally, section loses and load from pipes and ducts make W12 unreparable.

0.79 in

W12 span actual deflection 1.5" is about two times larger than allowable. N.G. Deflection will further increase due to section losses and load from pipes and ducts.

Cantilever portion of W12

Consider load combinations with LL located (a) on cantilever only and (b) on entire beam. After using some conservative assumptions for simplification of load calculations, the load diagrams and bending moments will be the following
