VEGETATION CLEARING AND TREE REMOVAL
A. While every effort has been made to pre-determine and identify the trees that need to be removed, once site work commences, construction related activities may identify additional trees that need to be removed. These trees will require complete stump removal and will have a unique color/symbol-ogy identifier painted on them. The stumps shall be removed to a depth of 4 feet or to a depth required to remove all roots 1-1/2" diameter or larger.
Stump removal includes backfilling the hole back to existing grade.

EXCAVATION AND DISPOSAL
All excavations of every description and of whatever substances encountered shall be performed to the depth indicated on the drawings or staked on the ground. All materials shall be piled in an orderly manner a sufficient distance from the banks of an excavation
Specifications D-27 BassLakeRecSites_StormDamage_Specifications_071023_FINA to avoid overloading and to prevent slides or cave-ins. Any excess excavated material may be utilized in other work areas, provided it is suitable material. Sheeting and shor-ing should be used as is necessary for the protection of the work and for the safety of personnel. Excavations shall be by open cut. Whenever depth of excavation exceeds 5 feet, the surface shall be sloped back at a 1-1/2 to 1 slope or the excavation shall be shored, as per OSHA requirements.
SITE EXCAVATION
The existing surface materials shall be removed in accordance with Section 02100. All suitable excavated material remaining after the demolition is accomplished shall be used in the construction of subgrades, shoulders, slopes, bedding and backfill for trenches and structures and backfill of future landscape areas.
TRENCH EXCAVATION
A. Trenches shall be of the necessary width for properly laying utility lines.
Water line trenches shall be uniformly graded to avoid high points that would necessitate the placing of air valves in the water lines. Trenches shall be of a depth to provide the minimum cover over the utility line shown on the drawings.
B. All roots shall be cut and removed from trenches. Bottoms of trenches shall be accurately graded to an elevation 4 inches below the grade line of the proposed utility line. Care shall be taken not to over excavate. When unsta-ble material that is incapable of properly supporting the utility is encoun-tered in the bottom of the trench, such materials shall be excavated to a depth to allow for construction of a stable bedding. In all cases, where ex-cavation is made below the indicated trench depths, such over excavation shall be backfilled with compacted granular material.
EXCAVATION FOR FORMWORK AND STRUCTURES
A. Excavation for slabs on grade shall be sufficient to allow for rock base, va-por barrier, sand, and slab thickness AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS and as otherwise required.
B. Forest Service will not make payment on excavations beyond indicated lim-its unless such excavations are authorized by the Forest Service in advance of doing the work. Over excavation shall be restored to specified elevations with compacted backfill approved by the Forest Service. Over excavation below footings shall be filled with concrete poured integrally with the foot-ing.
C. Excavated material not suitable for backfill shall be removed and disposed of off National Forest lands or as specified elsewhere herein.
Specifications D-28 BassLakeRecSites_StormDamage_Specifications_071023_FINA
D. All material to be excavated shall be unclassified and shall include earth fills, gravels, boulders, debris and any other materials encountered in exca-vation and grading operations. The Contractor shall remove all materials to the depth and extent indicated on the drawings or specified herein.
E. Unsuitable material not having the required bearing capacity AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS or that has been disturbed or weakened by construc-tion activity shall be completely removed and replaced with compacted backfill material or concrete to the required levels. The unsuitable material removed shall be disposed of as directed by the Forest Service.
F. All roots shall be cut and removed from subbase of campsites and ORARS.
Bottoms of subbase of campsites and ORARS shall be accurately graded.
EXISTING UTILITY LINES
A. The Contractor’s attention is directed to the existence of pipe and other un-derground improvements which may or may not be shown on the drawings.
All reasonable precautions shall be taken to preserve and protect any such improvements. The Contractor shall be responsible for contacting Under-ground Service Alert (U.S.A.) 5 working days before excavating to locate utilities.
B. The Contractor shall be aware of the possible existence of underground util-ities and improvements which may be in place but not shown on the draw-ings. If such are encountered the Contractor shall notify the Forest Service immediately and take precautions to preserve and protect any such improve-ments until further instructions can be issued by the Forest Service.
C. Where existing utilities or improvements interfere with the work, they shall not be removed, relocated or otherwise disturbed unless authorized by the Forest Service.
CONTROL OF WATER
Whenever subsurface water is encountered or surface water can enter an excavation, the Contractor shall furnish, install and maintain, and operate all necessary machinery, appliances, and equipment to keep the excavation free of water until the placing of the bedding material, laying and joining of the utility line, installation of tanks or struc-tures, inspection and approval for backfill, is complete and all danger of flotation and other damages is removed.
SITE BACKFILL AND COMPACTION
Compact all subgrade areas to receive surfacing (asphalt concrete or concrete pads) to not less than 95 percent of AASHTO T-180, method C or D for a minimum depth of 2 feet below subgrade elevation. Areas identified for future landscaping shall be graded and wheel rolled.
Specifications D-29 BassLakeRecSites_StormDamage_Specifications_071023_FINA
A. The density of the material specified for compaction shall be determined during the progress of the work by AASHTO T-191 or T-205 or T-238.
Moisture of the fill material shall be determined by AASHTO T-217 or T- 239 or T-255. Adjustment for coarse particles will be made in accordance with of AASHTO T-224.
In areas where field density test results indicate less than the required degree of compaction, or in areas where previously accepted compaction has been disturbed, the backfill shall be replaced or reconditioned to obtain the re-quired results at no additional cost to the Forest Service.
Reference Section 02340 for compaction requirements for campsites and ORARS.
BACKFILL FOR UTILITY TRENCHES
Trenches shall be backfilled AS SHOWN ON THE PLANS. The Contractor must ob-tain approval from the Forest Service prior to backfilling. Backfilling will not be au-thorized until the trenching, pipe, and pipe joints are inspected and conform in every way to these specifications.
Care shall be taken in the backfilling of sewer and drainage…
