About this file

This is a phasing and sections document for a culvert replacement project at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Headquarters and Visitor Center entrance road in Michigan. The project involves replacing an existing 4-foot diameter by 120-foot long corrugated metal pipe (CMP) culvert with a new 7-foot diameter by 120-foot long CMP culvert, positioned approximately 21 feet east of the existing culvert centerline. The work is organized into six phases: Phase 1 establishes a temporary 24-foot wide run-around traffic lane on the south side of the culvert embankment to maintain access during construction; Phases 2a and 2b involve demolition of the outlet half of the existing culvert and excavation of the outlet half of the proposed culvert location; Phases 3a and 3b include removal of the outlet half of the existing culvert with open channel creek flow and installation of the outlet 60 feet of the proposed culvert; Phases 4a and 4b cover demolition and excavation of the inlet half of the existing culvert; Phases 5a and 5b include removal of the inlet half of the existing culvert and installation of the inlet 60 feet of the proposed culvert with partial embankment construction; and Phase 6 represents completion of the full proposed culvert, culvert embankment, and roadway embankment.

The project must account for three underground utilities within the corridor: phone utility offset 1 foot from the asphalt edge at 24-36 inches depth, fiber optic utility offset 5 feet from the asphalt edge at 24-36 inches depth, and electric utility at an approximate location with depth to be determined. Erosion and sediment control measures include silt fence installation around excavation perimeters and consideration of high-velocity mulch blanket application on run-around embankment slopes. A temporary 12-inch diameter by 100-foot long CMP culvert or alternative flow protection is required to manage ditch flows during construction. The phased approach allows for sequential demolition and construction while maintaining creek flow conditions and site access throughout the project duration.

Phase 1 - Run around site plan

Line cadeaue Callout Construct a 24' wide x approx. 150' (along centerline) temporary traffic lane on south (inlet) side of culvert embankment. Provide a 16' wide driving lane and two 4' shoulders for placing construction barrels.

See Phase 1 - Run around cross section.

Consider applying high velocity mulch blanket on run around embankment slopes during construction / use of run around.
