About this file
This is a specification document for selective demolition of electrical systems as part of Project 25-388, a CBI HVAC and Lighting Upgrade. The document outlines the scope of work required for the removal and disposal of existing electrical installations, including equipment and materials that must be handled in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The work encompasses disconnection and removal of abandoned wiring, conduit, outlets, panelboards, distribution equipment, and luminaires, as well as the relocation and extension of existing electrical installations to accommodate new construction. Contractors must verify field measurements and circuiting arrangements before beginning work and report any discrepancies to the Owner and Architect. The specification requires coordination with utility companies for service outages and mandates the maintenance of existing electrical, fire alarm, and telephone systems in service during construction, with temporary connections and 24-hour advance notice to the Owner required before any system disabling.
Special attention must be paid to hazardous materials management, specifically the removal and disposal of equipment and materials containing toxic substances regulated under the Federal Toxic Substances Control Act, including PCB-containing transformers, capacitors, and switches; PCB- and DEHP-containing lighting ballasts; and mercury-containing lamps and tubes. Contractors are responsible for ensuring all demolition work complies with applicable regulations and for repairing any adjacent construction and finishes damaged during the demolition and extension process. The specification requires that access to existing active electrical installations be maintained and that extensions to existing installations use materials and methods compatible with those installations or as otherwise specified in the project documents.
