About this file
This is a technical specifications document for HVAC piping insulation work included in Project 25-388 CBI HVAC and Lighting Upgrade. The scope of work encompasses the installation of piping insulation, flexible removable and reusable blanket insulation, jacketing, and accessories for heating and cooling systems. The specifications detail materials and installation requirements for various piping applications including heating water supply and return lines, low-pressure steam piping, chilled water lines, condenser water piping, and refrigerant suction and hot gas lines. The document establishes minimum qualifications for applicators (minimum 3 years of experience) and manufacturers (minimum 3 years of documented experience) and requires compliance with multiple ASTM standards and UL testing protocols. Installation must maintain ambient conditions and temperature requirements for 24 hours before, during, and after application, with all work performed in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
The specifications establish performance requirements for insulation products including thermal characteristics, maximum service temperatures, moisture absorption limits, and flame spread ratings of 25/50 maximum per ASTM E84 or UL 723. Approved manufacturers are identified for glass fiber flexible insulation, glass fiber rigid insulation, hydrous calcium silicate, and flexible elastomeric cellular insulation, with provisions for approved substitutions. The insulation schedule specifies thickness requirements based on fluid temperature ranges and pipe diameter, ranging from 0.5 inches for chilled water and condenser water applications to 5 inches for low-pressure steam piping. Exterior applications require vapor barrier jackets with aluminum covers, while buried piping requires factory-fabricated assemblies with bituminous compound protection. Heat-traced piping and piping in mechanical equipment rooms have specific finish and jacket requirements outlined in the execution section.
