About this file

This is a specifications document for HVAC piping insulation work as part of project 25-388 CBI HVAC and Lighting Upgrade. The document outlines comprehensive requirements for the installation of piping insulation systems, including flexible removable and reusable blanket insulation, jacketing materials, and engineered wall outlet seals for refrigerant piping protection. The scope includes insulation for heating systems (heating water supply and return, low-pressure steam piping, and condensate lines), cooling systems (chilled water, condenser water, and refrigerant piping), and various application methods for exposed, buried, and heat-traced piping. Installation must comply with manufacturer specifications and industry standards including ASTM C177, C518, C533, C547, C795, and E84, with surface burning characteristics not exceeding a flame spread index/smoke developed index of 25/50.

The document specifies multiple approved manufacturers for different insulation types, including JP Lamborn Co, CertainTeed Corporation, Johns Manville Corporation, Knauf Insulation, and Owens Corning Corporation for rigid and flexible glass fiber products, with flexible elastomeric cellular insulation and engineered wall seals supplied by Airex Manufacturing, Inc. Applicators must demonstrate a minimum of three years of specialized experience, and all materials must be delivered with manufacturer identification, product density, and thickness labeling. Installation requirements vary by system type and fluid temperature ranges, with specific insulation thicknesses prescribed for pipes of different diameters and service applications, ranging from 0.5 inches for chilled water systems to 5 inches for low-pressure steam piping.
