About this file
This is a specification document for identification materials for HVAC piping and equipment as part of Project 25-388 CBI HVAC and Lighting Upgrade, Section 230553. The scope includes the provision and installation of nameplates, tags, adhesive-backed duct markers, stencils, pipe markers, and ceiling tacks for various HVAC components including air handling units, air terminal units, control panels, dampers, ductwork, heat transfer equipment, piping, pumps, tanks, and valves. Nameplates must feature white letters at 1/4 inch height on black backgrounds and comply with ASTM D709 specifications. Tags may be either laminated three-layer plastic with engraved letters or brass with stamped letters, with a minimum 1-1/2 inch diameter. Adhesive-backed duct markers must be high gloss acrylic vinyl film in yellow/black, while pipe markers must comply with ASME A13.1 color coding standards: green with white letters for heating and cooling systems, orange with black letters for toxic fluids, and blue with white letters for compressed air. Stencils must accommodate pipe sizes from 3/4 to 1-1/4 inches outside diameter with 1/2 inch high letters. Ceiling tacks are steel with 3/4 inch diameter color-coded heads: yellow for HVAC equipment, red for fire and smoke dampers, and blue for heating/cooling valves.
Installation requirements mandate that nameplates be fastened using corrosive-resistant mechanical fasteners or adhesive sealed with clear lacquer, while tags must be installed with corrosion-resistant chain. Piping identification tags must locate service, flow direction, and pressure information at intervals not exceeding 20 feet on straight runs, adjacent to valves and tees, at structure penetrations, and at obstructions. Ductwork identification must reference the associated air handling unit identification number and area served at the unit, structure penetrations, and obstructions. Approved manufacturers include Advanced Graphic Engraving LLC, Brimar Industries Inc, Kolbi Pipe Marker Co, Brady Corporation, and Seton Identification Products, with substitutions permitted under Section 016000. The specification references ASME A13.1 (2023) and ASTM D709 (2017) standards and requires submission of identification wording lists, valve charts and schedules, product data, manufacturer's installation instructions, and project record documents indicating actual valve locations.
