1. INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a collaborative national center for fusion energy and plasma science research. The Laboratory is a world leader in developing the knowledge, understanding and key innovations needed to make fusion energy a plentiful, safe, and environmentally friendly energy source for future generations. The Laboratory, managed by Princeton University, has a more-than 60-year history of discovery and leadership in the field of fusion energy. PPPL researchers are developing the scientific understanding for harnessing fusion energy. Fusion takes place when the atomic nuclei—or ions, in hot, electrically charged gas called a plasma, fuse together and release bursts of energy. PPPL is researching how to recreate this process on

Earth by heating plasma to tens of millions of degrees Celsius and confining it in powerful magnetic fields in toroidal devices called Tokamaks and Stellarators. The released energy could then be used to fuel the next generation of electricity.

The Laboratory’s major fusion plasma facility, the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX-

U), has undergone an upgrade that makes it the most powerful fusion facility of its kind in the world. PPPL conducts research on fusion facilities in Europe, China, Japan, and South Korea.

The Laboratory is responsible for providing diagnostic systems and components for ITER, the large international tokamak facility under construction in France to demonstrate the creation and control of a burning plasma. PPPL has pioneered the development of the Stellarator, a confinement concept that uses computer-optimized magnetic coil shapes to enable continuous operation and leads U.S. participation in Germany’s Wendelstein 7-X, the world’s most advanced stellarator.

The Laboratory’s Engineering Directorate is responsible for providing multidisciplinary engineering expertise to all projects across the PPPL portfolio. The Directorate comprises multiple engineering capabilities including: Mechanical Engineering, Analysis, Electrical

Engineering, Software Engineering/Computer Science, Systems Engineering, and Program

Management. The Engineering Directorate provides end-to-end fusion mission engineering support that is instrumental in designing and building systems and subsystems and distributing solutions over the world-wide fusion science community. To fulfill these responsibilities and ultimately achieve missions, the Engineering Directorate seeks to acquire multidisciplinary engineering services in support of its divisions to implement the mission.
