About this file

This is a public health advisory sign created by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) regarding water safety and fish consumption guidelines for the Au Sable River. The sign communicates permissible recreational activities and necessary precautions due to elevated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in fish and foam within this section of the river. Swimming, water contact, boating, and fishing are permitted; however, residents are prohibited from consuming non-migratory fish species such as bass and perch from the river, with specific guidelines available for migratory fish consumption through the Eat Safe Fish program accessible via QR code or Michigan.gov/EatSafeFish.

The advisory emphasizes protective measures related to foam exposure, which may contain high concentrations of PFAS. Recommended actions include rinsing foam contact with creek water, showering after outdoor activities, and preventing pet contact with foamy water through rinsing and water source management. The sign provides contact information for additional information through MDHHS at 800-648-6942 and carries publication reference MDHHS-Pub-1440 (8-21), indicating the document's official status as a health and safety communication tool distributed to the public.

Have fun on the Au Sable!

For more information, call the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services at 800-648-6942.

However, this section of the Au Sable River may have high levels of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in fish and foam, which could be harmful to your health.

This means:

It is okay to swim. Contact with the water is okay.

It is okay to boat.

It is okay to fish, but:

Do not eat non-migratory fish, such as bass and perch from the river. There are also guidelines on eating migratory fish.

Scan this QR code with your phone’s camera to check the Eat Safe Fish guidelines on eating fish from the area, or visit Michigan.gov/EatSafeFish.

Foam may have high amounts of PFAS. If you touch foam, rinse it off with creek water. Shower after the day’s outdoor activities.

Don’t allow pets to drink foamy water.

Avoid the foam.

Rinse pets with water so they avoid swallowing PFAS that may be on their fur.
