BOTTLED WATER OPERATIONS

These guidelines focus on precautionary measures which should be implemented to ensure that bottled water is handled safely and in sanitary condition to ensure good quality for drinking. Procedures for posts bottling water, transporting and storing bottled water, and for using water coolers to dispense drinking water are described below.

PERSONNEL SANITATION

As "food" handlers, individuals handling and especially bottling drinking water must first wash their hands with soap and water and dry their hands. The use of rubber gloves is recommended. Use safety glasses when working with bleach. The post health unit should be contacted for further guidance on personal hygiene of food handlers.

BOTTLED WATER SCENARIO

Post locally procures 5-gallon jugs of potable water for use in drinking water dispenser/coolers in offices and/or residences. Post must ensure that the purchased water is high quality and safe for drinking based on third-party certification and/or consistently favorable periodic quality control monitoring (e.g., of coliform bacteria). In this scenario, the empty 5-gallon jugs are replaced by filled jugs by the supplier providing this service on a scheduled basis.

To avoid contaminating drinking water while filling the containers or drawing water for consumption, pour or drain the water from containers rather than ladling. To improve the taste of the water (reduce the chlorine taste and add oxygen to stale water) pour the water back and forth between two clean containers or add a pinch of salt.

MANUAL BOTTLE WASHING

Wash hands thoroughly before washing water bottles and dry with wall mounted hand dryers or paper towel. Wear rubber gloves, a clean plastic apron and safety glasses.

Clean caps and exterior with mild detergent to remove soils as needed. Rinse with potable/purified water.

TRANSPORTING AND HANDLING HEAVY WATER BOTTLES

Five- gallon bottles of water can weigh 45 lbs or more. Because of the shape and size, these water bottles can be difficult to lift and transport. Use these guidelines to prevent injuries to workers who handle these water bottles.

Store bottles in sturdy water towers or on pallets rather than on the floor. Storing the bottles on the floor will make them difficult to lift. It is preferable to store bottles about 30" off the floor.

Do not store the bottles on deep shelves to prevent bending and reaching for the bottles.

Reduce the horizontal distance of the load away from the body by removing barriers, obstacles that make access to the bottles difficult.

One person should not lift these bottles above the shoulders. Team lift the bottles with two workers.

When lifting, keep bottles as close to the body as possible to maximize strength.

Bend and lift with the legs. Avoid twisting the torso by locating bottles and the cooler within arm’s reach.

If possible, store a number of bottles near the coolers so that moving them is minimized.

If handholds are available, use them. Handholds increase lifting capability up to

15% .

When moving bottles from storage to water coolers, transport them on rolling carts, or use mobile storage racks to avoid unnecessary loading and unloading.

Have several workers available to replace bottles. Don’t assign the task to just 1 or 2 workers.

Provide training on using carts and lifting techniques.
