RADON EXPLANATORY NOTES

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a radon action level of 4.0 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L). Occupied buildings with radon concentrations less than 4.0 pCi/L do not require radon mitigation; un-occupied buildings, or those buildings which are occupied only infrequently for brief periods of time, also do not require radon mitigation. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than

4.0 pCi/L require radon mitigation and verification of radon reductions as soon as possible, with priority given to dormitories and student recreation buildings. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than 20.0 pCi/L should be considered significant radon exposure hazards, and priority for mitigation should be given to buildings with these highly elevated radon concentrations.

Radon mitigation techniques include: (1) adjustment of the building HVAC system to create a positive pressure within the building; (2) sealing of foundation wall cracks, penetrations, or other openings;

(3) sealing crawlspace openings and sump pits; (4) installing an active subslab depressurization (ASD) system.

Paving Type for Roads & Parking

The City owns the roads and sidewalks. The Center is located on several city blocks, however, there are no crosswalks across the roads for the students to use while circulating around the Center. Parking is provided by Center owned/leased lots (two blocks west of main campus) including street parking.

Asphalt Concrete

Comments:

Topography Buildings and Structures

Center is not fully enclosed by fencing. The campus has several courtyards paved with a combination of exposed aggregate concrete pavers, decorative brick and plain concrete pavers. Plants, trellises, benches and tables are located within these courtyards. The dormitory courtyard has extensive landscape, water features, a series of ponds and an outdoor grill. The soft vocation, education, recreation, administration and dormitory blocks have perimeter masonry fences with stucco finish. The hard vocation and new parking blocks have perimeter chain link fences.

The telephone service entrance/ DEMARK point are located in the basement telephone room in Building 1. Main data closet (MC) housing Cisco distribution equipment and telecommunication closet (TC) are located at the first floor of Building 1. The Centers data layout is based on four servers (two for staff and two for student applications) located three in the MC and one in TC. Data equipment in MC is provided by power backup by UPS units, which buffers the power surges and drops in the line voltage up to 20 minutes before an automated shut down. Long distance telephone service is provided by Job Corps Data Center (JCDC). The telephone system including local and full DSI DID Trucking Service is provided by Integra Telecom Communication. There are a total of 200 available phone lines at the Center, with 135 Voice digital desk top phones, 11 analog fax lines, and 54 spare lines. The data from MC in Building 1 through a Cisco 6506 switch and two 3900 series is distributed to eight other building (3560 series switches ) overhead via fiber optic cable. Four fire alarm systems on the Center are remotely monitored from the security area in Building 1. Two systems are located in Buildings 1 and 10 respectively, one located in Building 7 and monitor devices in Buildings 2, 15, and 8, and one located in Building 16 and monitors devices in Buildings 17 and 18. Mitrone EST fire alarm systems are provided in Buildings 1, 7, and 10, and Silent Knight system in Building 16. There are four surveillance cameras, one at the northwest corner of Building 7 scanning the Center's front parking and main entrance from Buchanan Street, one on the west exterior wall of Building 1, scanning the Center's west entrance from Second Street to the Alley, one at the main entrance and one in the lobby of Building 1. The cameras are monitored from color monitor in the security office in Building 1.

Comments: The building has two services. The first service is brought from the west via 3x75 kVA pole-mounted transformers on Second Street to an 800A MDS switchboard (3/26/1976) located in the gymnasium electrical room, and serves loads in the west half of the building (the gymnasium and academic education), and a 400A MCB distribution panel on the roof, providing for HVAC loads at the west and a 200A panel in Building 8. The second service brought from a power pole on Third Street to a pad-mounted transformer at the back of the building, which energizes a 3000A switchgear adjacent to the transformer. The 1200A fused disconnect switch in 3000A switchgear feeds one 1200A MLO switchboard (12/24/1969) through a 1200A fused disconnect, both located in the cafeteria electrical room and serve the east half of the building (the cafeteria and administration area), and one 1200A MLO switchboard on the roof.
