RADON EXPLANATORY NOTES
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a radon action level of 4.0 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L). Occupied buildings with radon concentrations less than 4.0 pCi/L do not require radon mitigation; un-occupied buildings, or those buildings which are occupied only infrequently for brief periods of time, also do not require radon mitigation. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than
4.0 pCi/L require radon mitigation and verification of radon reductions as soon as possible, with priority given to dormitories and student recreation buildings. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than 20.0 pCi/L should be considered significant radon exposure hazards, and priority for mitigation should be given to buildings with these highly elevated radon concentrations.
Radon mitigation techniques include: (1) adjustment of the building HVAC system to create a positive pressure within the building; (2) sealing of foundation wall cracks, penetrations, or other openings;
(3) sealing crawlspace openings and sump pits; (4) installing an active subslab depressurization (ASD) system.

The 12.4/7.15 kV primary service is brought to the Center at one location from overhead lines along Union Street.
The primary radial service feeds several Center pad-mounted and vault-mounted transformers. Vault-mounted transformers are provided in older Buildings 5 and 6.The Center has one pole-mounted primary meter near Building
5. There are five owner meters connected to the web-based metering system. The meters are located at the service entrances near the main distribution panelboards in all main buildings with the exception of Dining Hall Building 8.
The primary and secondary power lines are owned and maintained by the Center. Some smaller buildings and structures are sub-fed from adjacent buildings. The only 480/277V, 3-phase, 4 wire service is provided as a second service to Union Street Building 5. Surge protectors are provided in all buildings.

Telephone Company
On-site Line Owner
The Union Street Building (Building 5) is utilized as the main communication service entrance for the Center's five T1 telephone lines that serve the Center network. These five T1 lines are extended to Building 6 (Dow Lane) main computer closet. Building 6 is also where the main network closet and DEMARK are located. The data transmission is routed from the MC through a Cisco 6500 router. Each building on Center is connected to the network with both Category 5 and 6 Ethernet network cable connecting a Cisco 3500 XL switch. Building 5 has two steel wall mounted racks that house three 24 port Cisco 3500 XL switches. Three of theT1 lines are IPS circuits and used for Internet. 2 lines are connected to router 2 and are used for production services (Citrix and CDSS).
These switches provide the network to the entire Center. There are capabilities for 400 network drops. The Center also maintains 108 analog phone lines, 20 digital lines and 9 fax lines. Communication closets in Buildings 5 and 6 are kept locked using a dead-bolt key lock. The rooms are cooled to protect the sensitive equipment. The equipment in these rooms is protected by surge protectors. The Center Nortel Telecom telephone system has a UPS backup system for interruptions up to 20 minutes before an automated, graceful shut down is enacted. The T1 lines, long and local distance calls are managed by Fair Point. The network hardware is manufactured by Cisco, implemented and managed remotely by JCDC. The satellite/cable TV service is provided by the Time Warner Company to Dorm Buildings 9 and 10. A satellite dish is provided at Building 11. The Center security system consists of door contactors in the dorms. The Center fire alarm system is maintained by Eagle Security System (1-800-989-1730). Each of 6 buildings is wired at the control panel via dedicated line. In the event of alarm Eagle Security System notifies the local fire department and staff on the Center.
