FADE IN:

INT./EXT. - FISH’S 70’S MUSCLE CAR - NIGHT

The two-door, primer gray coupe cruises the streets of a primitive section of town.

FISH, 35, flannel shirt, drives with a determined focus.

WILLY, 32, distracted, rides silently with his head down.

Willy wears a greasy mechanics shirt with pens and a tire gauge in the breast pocket.

Fish punches Willy’s shoulder.

FISH

What’s with you, man? I thought Jake was your friend.

WILLY

He is.

FISH

Then get your game face on.

Fish pulls a large handgun from between his legs.

FISH (CONT’D)

It’s payback time.

Fish evilly grins. Willy nods, then looks ahead.

WILLY

Hey, pull in. I need some smokes.

Fish, irritated, pulls the car into a trashy convenient store lot, parking across several spaces directly in front of the entrance.

FISH

Make it quick. And grab us a case.

INT. CONVENIENCE STORE - NIGHT

The male CASHIER, late teens, is texting away on a cell phone. As Willy enters, the two men briefly make eye contact.

Willy stops in front of the clear-glass refrigerator doors.

He removes a cell phone from a pant pocket.

ON CELL PHONE

The screen is smashed.

BACK TO SCENE

Willy looks back toward the cashier, who appears to be juggling several text conversations - swipe, type, swipe, type. Careful not to be obvious, he then glances over to Fish’s car just outside the door, in clear view of the cashier’s counter.

Willy pockets the broken cell phone, then grabs a case of cheap beer from the cooler.

Willy places the beer on the counter, returning a pen to his breast pocket. He casually leans atop the case with his back to the entrance while digging into the breast pocket.

CASHIER

Will this be it for you?

Willy pulls folded bills from his pocket, and speaks without looking directly at the cashier.

WILLY

Answer your phone.

CASHIER

What?

WILLY

Kid, I’m in a little trouble and I need your help. Now, raise your phone to your ear, like you’re talking on it.

The cashier, albeit confused, puts his phone to his ear.

WILLY (CONT’D)

Thank you. Don’t worry. I’m an FBI special agent. I’m not carrying my badge so you’re going to have to trust me. Now, in a moment I’m going to ask you for a pack of Camels. But first I need you to send a text to the number on the box. Do you see it?

INSERT - BEER CASE

A hand written “555-1010”.

BACK TO SCENE

CASHIER

Yeah.

2.

3.

WILLY

Go ahead and type it into your phone.

The cashier, concerned, stands frozen.

WILLY (CONT’D)

C’mon, kid. I’ll make it worth your while.

Willy drops the cash onto the counter.

The cashier looks at the money, then lowers his phone and begins copying the number from the box.

WILLY (CONT’D)

Text this sentence. Sounds...

like... a... plan. Need me to repeat it?

CASHIER

Sounds like a plan. Got it.

WILLY

Send it.

The cell phone makes a WHOOSH sound.

CASHIER

Is that it?

Willy faces the cashier for the first time, pointing behind him.

WILLY

Pack of Camels.

As the cashier reaches for the cigarettes, his cell phone RINGS. He doesn’t recognize the number.

WILLY (CONT’D)

Put that on speaker for me, will ya? Don’t make it obvious.

The cashier hits a button on the phone, and holds it up to his face.

WILLY (CONT’D)

Yo!

MALE VOICE

(filtered)

Who’s phone is this?

3.

4.

WILLY

My new best friend’s. And we’re unsecured, so keep it clean.

Listen, cool and the gang are en route to First Baptist on M-L-K for a pow wow.

MALE VOICE

(filtered)

They bringing fireworks?

WILLY

And matches.

MALE VOICE

(filtered)

Copy. I’ll round up the calvary.

WILLY

I’ll be mobile shortly. Fish’s ride. Remember it?

MALE VOICE

(filtered)

Primer gray gas guzzler?

WILLY

That’s the one. Suspect is one-four-seven. Have local PD do a traffic stop. I’ll deescalate and secure the weapon.

MALE VOICE

(filtered)

Copy that. Be careful.

WILLY

Likewise.

There’s an audible CLICK as the phones disconnect.

Willy grabs the beer and cigarettes.

WILLY (CONT’D)

Thanks, kid.

INT./EXT. - FISH’S 70’S MUSCLE CAR - NIGHT

Willy drops the case of beer to the floorboards as he jumps into the car and closes the door. Fish immediately puts the car in drive and peels out of the lot.

5.

FISH

Damn kids and their cell phones.

WILLY

No kidding.

FISH

Grab me one, will ya?

WILLY

I don’t think that’s a good idea.

There’s cops up ahead.

Fish leans in over the steering wheel.

FISH

Awww, man. Where?

WILLY

Take my word for it. You might want to secure the weapon too.

Fish lift up the handgun, quickly looks for a place to stash it.

WILLY (CONT’D)

Let me.

FISH

Thanks, brother.

Fish hands Willy the weapon.

FISH (CONT’D)

Jake said you were good people.

Willy looks pleased.

WILLY

Remind me to thank him.
